Couple pics from a quick trip we recently made down there, Oro Valley specifically, nice resort. Love the vegetation and wildlife.

The amount of house you can purchase down there compared to here is unreal.

I assume you're talking about that $69.99 deal? I debated getting one as I'm looking to upgrade an aging Vera Lite I've had for many years now. The Hubitat has been intriguing to me but I just don't think it's quite ready for prime time from the stuff I was reading. I think they finally got an app but I'd like to see some more development down the road. I still dislike how you have to add so many things out of the box that I would consider basic SA controller type stuff and the tiles and what not are a bit tedious to set up. I like where their mind is in terms of end user customization but I still feel as though more stuff should be propagated out of the box. I opted instead for a Vera Plus via an upgrade for long-time customers they were doing which made it not much more than that Hubitat deal that was running so that's what made the decision for me.
    Yes.

I came from Wink to HE in early Sep as they've been circling the drain thanks to Will.I.Am and problematic to say the least for quite some time.

I did quite a bit of research before moving and while the somewhat lack of maturity of the HE is apparent, the lack of dependency on all things cloud for local control was most attractive. ST has seen a fair amount of abandonment among the heavy HA user community lately, all flocking to HE.

Since we're using HA mostly for automation and voice control via Alexa, I'm not to troubled by the infancy of the dashboard/tile setup and the app has presence detection so it's useful to some degree. If the internet or API's are down, I can still use a local HE dashboard/app or wall switches. I've dumped all the "smart bulbs" that repeat (GE and Cree) because they're shitty Zigbee repeaters and put in AC powered Zigbee/Zwave wall plugs and a few non repeating Zigbee bulbs.

If I wasn't concerned about cloud dependency and wasn't heavily invested in Z-Wave as well as Zigbee and Lutron (had to buy a Lutron PRO2 hub to work with HE), I would probably just run everything Zigbee on Echo's hub. I understand Ring also has some Zigbee hub capabilities now, but it's really immature and limited.

As to installing apps in HE, it comes minimally loaded by design and most of the apps are actually provided by HE and just need to be installed if you use them (or not). The add-on community apps are very nice if needed. Most oare stable, some can be problematic. HE has a VERY powerful rules engine so you can do a ton with automation and it's all LOCAL and private (unless you link into cloud API's for other stuff).

I've got HE telling Alexa to speak things (via Echo Speaks), Alexa controlling HE via the provided Alexa App and most of my other automation is handled by "Simple Lighting" and "Motion Lighting." Setting modes based on time of day. luminance, presence etc is simple and effective.

All in all, I'm very pleased with HE and the powerful controls. The add on community apps are useful, and the support community is helpful. There's been lots of negative traffic lately because frankly, there's a bunch of really dumb people that were running Wink that just don't have the skills to setup HE.

Everything you said regarding non-cloud controllers is the main reason I've been running the Vera platform for years. I won't run anything that can't function locally w/o the internet.

That would be great! Tucson has most everything we need, but I have a feeling we'll be making the trek to Phoenix somewhat frequently for entertainment purposes.
