I decided to take a run at the testing . . . County Line facility (C-470 & Colorado Blvd ish). My wife drives by that place every day and says the line starts forming by 6:30--the facility opens at 8:00 am. After that. the line tends to spill out onto Colorado and goes back a ways and she says it's busy all day from what she has seen.

Figured I'd rather wait during the coolest part of the day and just knock it out first thing. I got there a little after 6:00 am and was the 3rd vehicle in line. Got right in at 8:00 and only took a few minutes to get right back out the door and on my way. Didn't even hook my Xterra up for the "treadmill" test. When I drove out, the line on Colorado was all the way past C-470 and stretched back to the next light south. Yeesh.

If they didn't put you on the treadmill, you likely had passed the roadside screening a few times. I used to go to that station with my xterra, but they won't allow 35" tires on it. Last time I was there, I had 33" mudders and it almost climbed off the treadmill. The tire noise from the lugs was deafening also.

    That sounds like fun.

I remember back when I first got my Eagle Talon in '91 there weren't a lot of AWD cars on the road (as a percentage like they are today anyway) and those testing facilities only had one bay that could do AWD. Sometimes you'd be in a pretty good line behind all the Subarus and Audis.

Those AWD Turbo Eagle Talons were slick, the fastest I've ever driven a car, albeit slow by todays standards, was in a 91 or 92 AWD Turbo Talon. I've always been a 4x4 guy, so very limited experience with speed.

I had the 91 TSi. I miss that car every day. Was so much fun to drive in the mountains . . . would rip up either side of Einsenhower without breaking a sweat. But when the kids started coming and I wasn't making much money, it just wasn't practical at all and I traded it in for a Honda Passport--which was great in its own way.

Went to Mazatlan one year for spring break and my mom agreed to ride with us to the airport to drive the Talon back home after I drove there for drop off. She said it scared the living hell out of her all the way home.
