Mmmm. Let me propose another possibility behind this:
Suppose the sponsor of this acknowledges the fact that the MSR (AR15) is the most popular rifle/firearm in use TODAY (sure, there have been several other firearms that have earned their place in history, but not necessarily in popular use today - at least not at the AR15 level). Let's continue to suppose that this sponsor is well aware of the attacks against and proposals to ban the MSR so by having it officially recognized as the "National Gun of the United States", it may be a way to prevent citizens from being prohibited from owning/possessing MSR's.
Just a consideration for what may be behind this effort.

I always think of being the last man on earth. I am alone. The coyotes and wolves have survived and multiplied. They are hungry. 6 wolves have boxed me in a canyon. I have a MSR and a 30 round magazine. I survive this situation because I have a weapon of this capability. North America can be a brutal place. Just sayin'...

Thanks! It's a Colt 01911 WWI Repro in Carbonia Blue finish. It was a limited production run of 4500 made approx 15 years ago? A quite accurate repro of the originals. It's a purty sumbitch, I just kinda stumbled onto it for $900, probably worth 3x that now.
Colt also made a much larger run of them in the "Black Army" finish, but these blue ones are hard to find.

AR15 is clearly the most popular rifle in America, at least over the past 20+ years.
Yet it is the rifle politicians most want banned.
Cool Bill... unfortunately, doubt it will pass.
