Once upon a time, it was considerably cheaper than gasoline, but it seems like after the low sulfer mandate in the 2000s it became more expensive. Diesel is also seasonal. Heating oil production and demand in the winter drives up the price of diesel. Then there is the refining capacity of imported crude oil and draconian environmental regs that impact the price....we won't talk about pissing in my DEF tank every 1000 miles. Anyhow, we pay more than we should because those in power want it that way. Lowering the price of diesel fuel and subsequently distribution costs is the one thing that would ease inflation, but our overlords don't want that either.

Great! don't buy there--it'll be easier for me to get the cheap gas. The Valero next to it is still well below average at $2.69. I have a 25 gallon tank--if I buy 23 gallons, I saved $23 (and that's just relative to a station that's trying to compete--not average prices around metro Denver). That's two boxes of 9mm. And, surprisingly, with gas stations open 24 hours per day, it's easy to drive right up and fill up without a wait.

Maybe you haven't heard, but with crazy inflation now, many people are struggling with all costs across the board. Obviously you can't be bothered to save a few bucks while you're dropping gold doubloons to the poors from your hot air balloon, but some of us don't mind saving when and where we can.

    Cheap?

    You young whipper snappers.

Back in my day we paid less than fifty cents a gallon for gas.

I never had to walk to school barefoot in the snow uphill both ways because gas was cheap and I could just drive.

I knew a Russian that, if the line at the grocery store was more than three deep, he would walk out.

    I asked him why.

He said growing up in Soviet Russia, all they did all day was stand in lines, ofter getting nothing. He said when he got his U.S. citizenship, he vowed he would never stand in a line again.

I remember the $.70-$.90 gas prices in high school; diesel was like $.60. We could get a new vehicle for like 5-10k then too. It didn't require a mortgage payment like my new truck.

    an oldie, but...

A Soviet man is waiting in line to purchase vodka from a liquor store, but due to restrictions imposed by Gorbachev, the line is very long. The man loses his composure and screams, "I can't take this waiting in line anymore, I HATE Gorbachev, I am going to the Kremlin right now, and I am going to kill him!" After 40 minutes the man returns and elbows his way back to his place in line. The crowd begin to ask if he has succeeded in killing Gorbachev. "No, I got to the Kremlin all right, but the line to kill Gorbachev was even longer than here!"
