The "time of use" pricing rate, which went into effect June 1, means Xcel customers will pay more than two times the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) if using energy during peak time hours, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

Customers using electricity within that timeframe will see their energy bill go up from $0.12/kWh to $0.32/kWh- nearly three times more than if using electricity during "off-peak" hours.

"If you think about it, we're trying to curtail the amount of energy that is consumed at the largest part of the day," Andrew Holder, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy.

Holder told Denver7 the time of use rate for customers with smart meters, "allows our electric customers to have the freedom of choice to ensure that they can meet their energy usage and use their energy as efficiently and as effective as possible,"...

Bullshit.

Xcel has a monopoly in Denver so there is no freedom of choice. They have a tiered pricing plan because they can charge more when users need more and the idiots in the Public Utilities Commission allow it.

I am lucky that I can afford to run the A/C and my electric oven or clothes dryer at the same time between 1 and 7 p.m. Not everyone has that luxurious "freedom of choice".

We need choice and competition to achieve a real market value on electricity.

They replaced our meters at my townhome complex. I didn't have a choice, I just came home one day and there was a note on my door saying they were being changed out tomorrow and that I might experience a brief power outage.

It will cost me $46 to shut off the "smart"meter and $11.84 a month to have a guy come by and record the usage.

I recall at one time Xcel offered a "money saving plan" customers could enroll in. Those who did were shocked when their electricity was cut off on 100 degree days so their air conditioners wouldn't work. When they contacted Xcel to complain, they were told to read the fine print of the plan they signed up for.

We have a smart meter and pay a fixed rate. I had to wait on the phone for like an hour to do that back when they announced time of use rates.

I'll have to look at my bills. They put in a smart meter but I have never signed up for any special pricing deals. As mentioned above those special pricing plans usually come with the stipulation that they will turn off your power during certain events

No, opting out of Time of Use is not the same as turning off your AC during high demand, that is a separate program called Saver's Switch and that just gives you a few dollar discount each month. You have to request that.

Anybody who didn't do anything got a smart meter and Time Of Use rates.

Some people opted out of a smart meter, paid a fee and pay extra each month for a person to come read their meter.

But there was an option to opt out of Time Of Use by calling Xcel and telling them you would rather pay a slightly higher fixed rate. That option works with a smart meter so you don't pay the manual reading fee. This option does nothing to your rate or allowed usage during high demand. You use as much energy as you want, whenever you want and pay a fix rate. I could keep my AC blasting my house down to 62deg at 5pm when it's 105deg outside if I want and still only pay $0.16/kWh.

Someone has to pay for the free electricity handed out to all those claiming indigency. They hand out an incredible amount of "free" power to people that don't work.
