    So I went in to a Police Station today and told them I had a firearm that I was unsure of its past and wanted to make sure it wasn't stolen. And the guy ran it and it came back clean

    NCIC. National crime information center. If the serial number is listed in it as stolen then a simple database search will show that. If the gun was used in the commission of a crime, well, they obviously don't know the serial number of the gun used but they may have cataloged the bullet or a spent case in NIBIN. So, it's not stolen, but it could still have a body attached to it. Probably not, but just sayin...
