    Therein lies the real problem.
I had a discussion about this Occupy Wall St. crap with my uncle over lunch today, and he basically said the same thing.
We have a family business that's made a big name for itself in the industry we're in. A man came to us from Shanghai (via email, then in person recently) saying he likes our products and that he would like to purchase some examples to sell them in China. This could become a very profitable business partnership.
Problem is, because of gov't regulations (repatriation laws), the money we'd make in China would have to stay in China... we couldn't use the funds here, which means our economy can't benefit via money being spent here/jobs being created with company expansions/etc. If we were to try to repatriate our profits, we'd be taxed very heavily to the point where it wouldn't even be worth it. This is happening with much, much larger companies and corporations than our family business... think Microsoft, etc.
This is the crap these idiots should be protesting. Then maybe there'd be more jobs for them to work.

The worst part, IMO, is that most of these kids are getting pointless degrees to begin with. I have a BA in Psych and if I could go back in time and beat some sense into myself to get a degree in CS or something else with some actual hard skills, I would.

If you landed $50-$70K in debt to get a BA in Sociology, Psychology, or something else like Philosophy - and you did it expecting to get some high-paying job, then there is no help for you.

I work at a university and I can't tell you how many thousands of students are here, working towards a degree they don't really understand or enjoy, griping about the cost but with no real plan of how they will take care of that.

Meanwhile, the silent minority is getting degree in Computer Science, Landscape Architecture, various forms of Engineering, etc, and graduating without all this vocal bitching.

Yes, the damn tuition went up 3x more than when I was going to school. It sucks.
Tell you this... during my undergrad yrs, majority of kids/students who were "busy" was only taking 12-15cr per sem, and was busy partying/porning.

This is why I think SLM CAN BE a possible fannie and freddie.
One of the biggest difference is that student loan must be paid even bk is filed.

I don't regret having my college degree, however, if I could go back in time and beat some sense into myself, it would be getting some hard skills as in machinist, welding, plumbing, carpentry. These skills are useful for barter. Bert could probably explain this better than I can, but with these kinds of skills you can trade with farmers and butchers for things you need to live.

Seems to me they should be protesting the universities they are attending for the absolute insane tuition they charge for the shitty education they are putting out.

    Just a thought

So just what is a "Liberal Arts" degree good for anyway? While there is a lot to be said for an advanced education and there are certainly vocations that warrant it in the years I have been working since age 16 I have seen more educated idiots than I care to remember.
When I worked at Chatfield SRA there was a ranger that had a degree in forestry and another in law enforcement. How pathetic that he had to come find the 18 yo long haired kid (me) to hook up a map light in his patrol vehicle because he had no comprehension of "negative" and "positive".
    Educated idiot.
To address CStones point- having marketable skills is key to basic survival. I have lived on my own since I was 16 and the longest I have ever been out of work was 2 weeks and that was by choice. I have only really needed help from an outside source once, I borrowed the money from a relative and paid it back in full 3 weeks later. All because I got hurt at work and had to wait for Workmans Comp to kick in.
In a depressed economy there may not be a need for engineers or physicists.
But stuff is always going to break and there will always be a need for people who aren't afraid to get dirty, hell that aint dirt-thats money!
I have never made 100K per year.
But I have always been able to keep my family fed and a roof over their head.
People need to decide what is truly important and get their priorities straight.
There is a tremendous difference between "Wants" and "Needs".

Speaking of which- if these morons protesting Wall Street are so destitute that they have to resort to relatively extreme measures as they are just how the hell are they eating and clothing themselves?
The most important thing to be learned from those who demand "Equality For All" is that all are not equal...
