The bad guys will not be "keeping quiet." They will be telling the cops you pulled on them, perhaps create some appearance of racism if they can exploit it, and generally make it look like you are the bad guy. What happened may not be obvious to the cops who come out to investigate.
I'm of the mindset that you should establish a very simple, just-the-facts version of what went down so that the cops get a fair idea of who the real criminal is.
I wasn't thinking too much into that when I typed that response, but I wouldn't lawyer up immediately. Something like...

I would not doubt in the least you were being sized up for a break in, auto theft or carjack. The fact that it was Cali plates would make me even more suspicious. Unless you are willing to sit up all night and babysit the best idea is to park in a different and secure area. Unfortunately you can't do that every night.

Wasn't there a case here in CO. a few months ago where an older gentleman pulled a handgun on a couple of pepper bellies trying to steal a trailer out of his driveway and the old guy went to jail ? He was also charged and is still fighting in court or lost, I never did hear the outcome.

Said 70 something year old man was not convicted on the serious charges but some lesser charges if I remember correctly and then put on probation and then also lost his rights to own firearms to protect his family.
The thing that hurt him was shooting at them as they drove off instead of rightaway when he confronted him if he infact did confront them in the first place before they took off. I dont remember all the details.
