Said 70 something year old man was not convicted on the serious charges but some lesser charges if I remember correctly and then put on probation and then also lost his rights to own firearms to protect his family.
The thing that hurt him was shooting at them as they drove off instead of rightaway when he confronted him if he infact did confront them in the first place before they took off. I dont remember all the details.

Still, convicted on the lesser charges, probation and losing the right to have a firearms. That is some serious consequences.

The fact that you are in one of the friendliest crowds toward 2A in here and being told not to shoot over a car ought to tell you something. Unless you're living in your car, you can't consider it an extension of your home and going out with your trusty 1911 after asking for help and being told various options short of starting a gunfight is just asking for a charge of premeditation.

Some of the "advice" in here sounds like plants from the Brady Bunch just itching to have a story they can exploit. I know you're not -- but you might as well be.

Lot's of stupid in this thread by the way.
I'd be doing/feeling the same way as you Ronin, but I'd never encourage anyone else to act that way. That's just stupid. I've moved my car into another parking lot before.
The chances of you getting into any violent encounter are fairly low... yet most of us here carry. The chances of your house or your kids' school burning down are extremely low... yet there are fire alarms in every hallway and many people have home security systems.

IIRC there were some things wrong with that case. He shot at them when they were driving off, for one. I also remember something about not having a lawyer or having issues with his defense or something.

Best advise here, I'd suggest an oddball u-turn, or randomly pull over (at your safest convienence of course) just to be sure.

That is exactly right, cause the first thing you will be told by the Officer is you should have ran back inside and shut and locked your door and called 911.

Update- it's almost 2200 and still nothing... going to bed soon, I don't really think I have to worry because my CSP neighbor is home (she parked her cruiser here- I'll have to ask about that sometime)... Also I now realize I don't think they were scouting me because they'd have to be the dumbest criminals on earth. By the way, I wouldn't have drawn down unless it was a very last resort, I'd confront while carrying but wouldn't bring it to drawn unless I had no other options. And the whole letting them follow me home- the entire time they followed while suspicious, I thought it was coincidence, it happened to me once where I thought I was being tailed and the guy turned out to be one of my neighbors- he even unlocked and went into the apartment above and across from me. Damn you uncle sam for installing the hyper vigilance app on my brain!

maybe I have too much tinfoil, but if I have a strong assumption I am being followed, I instantly start looking for ways out; a place to pull over and sit or a parking lot to go in to so I can watch what they are doing while driving.
I have had one guy follow me when I was a teenager....17 probably. he was riding my ass while I was in my dads truck and he was in a honda civic, I was heading home from a golf tournament. He got brake checked and then I drove 10 under for about a mile on a one lane road. He started following me even at speeds in excess of 90 mph. I pulled into a very nice neighborhood and he followed but I zipped out the back way and lost him. went and sat in a parking lot for a while and didn't see him for about 10 minutes then went home. i was prepared with my 3 iron and a pocketknife.
All I have in this world is my balls and my word and I don't break em for no one.
