Make sure you understand the difference between national parks and national forests and other land management agencies.
The local agency for the area you wish to camp should have plain advisories posted on their web page.
www.geocommunicator.gov or the Colorado hunting atlas http://ndis-flex.nrel.colostate.edu/HuntingAtlas/
can help you determine the appropriate land management agency for your area with an online mapping interface.
Man, I feel your ffear in regard to fires. I had one just last week 1/2 a mile from my house caused by lightning. Scared the shit out of me. Throwing stuff in the Jeeps, making decisions about what to take and what to leave behind, etc. was nerve-wracking to say the least.
The greenies would say, "Mother nature says 'Stop building homes where I may start a forest fire. That's what I do time to time, ya know."
And while it sucks, they do have a point. Fires that are caused naturally like lightning are part of the cycle and we just have to accept the fact that they might happen if we live in the forest. Yeah, it fucking sucks if it happens. So does getting struck by lightning, but you can't control that either. I've simply accepted that I might lose my home to a fire one day. And I will do nothing to risk starting a fire myself. All you can do is be responsible.
Fires cause by some stupid prick are another story completely. Fines/jail time for these asshats should be VERY steep indeed.
Outside of shooting tracers, which I never have a reason to shoot, I just can't imagine plinking into a dirt backstop is going to cause a fire, particularly with low caliber weapons. I'll call around and see what I can find out tomorrow and report back so we all know.

Wasn't one of them started by someone shooting a propane tank?
You might be thinking of the one that started when a guy backed into a propane tank in the foothills near Boulder. Might have been a guy filling the tank, but I'm not sure now. That was the one last summer that started near Boulder and got HUGE I believe.
If it was a guy SHOOTING a propane tank, that would have been blown up on the DLEMM instantly.![]()
I thought this latest one near Lake George {Stringer Fire?} was from someone shooting some type of fuel tank.
