Like Zundfolge quoted up in #16, the owner said he didn't care who it was, he just didn't want them using his restaurant to make a campaign "appearance" with speech, filming, reporters, all that crap. He even said Romney wasn't coming there to eat, just to use the place as a prop for campaign purposes, and to hold up the owners as fine examples of Hispanic Mormons.

What I get from that quote is that Romney and his bunch wanted to USE the restaurant and it's owners, not EAT there. And the guy told 'em to piss off. I can respect that. And I love good Messican food! Too far to drive for lunch though, dammit.

    Oscar Aguirre

I (Oscar) would like to apologize to EVERY ONE WE MAY HAVE Offended. concerning Governor Mitt Romney, and the article in westword http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociet..._rosa_lind.php
We did not refuse him service yesterday THAT IS FALSE! as stated in the article when we were contacted by the campaign of Candidate Romney on August 6th, by a former mormon missionary that he would like to bring the canidate here, NOT TO EAT but; it was presented to us that he wanted to do a political stump here. Talk about our small business and how because we share our religious views with the candidate and are Latinos it would be great for him to do a campaign stop. We Did say NO because we are not Republicans, Nor are we Democrats. We will welcome any sitting President Of the United States. But, We Did not want to be a campaign stopping place….
Since this article came out we have been getting hate emails, from people across the country, people sending us death threats and people calling us telling us we are racist… that they hope we go out of business. All are welcome to join us for family meal! we may not be your cup of tea but we still welcome anybody with open arms.
We DID NOT WANT TO BE A POLITICAL STOP!!
If we do go out of business our Annual Thanksgiving Feast to the needy would end. Last year we fed 5500 meals, this year we may serve above 6000 meals. Please let the American public know that we are not racist or bigots. We are just a working family wanting to help our community and our country by serving those in need.
    PLEASE STOP THE HATE!!

They seem like good people to me. Serve thousands for free on thanksgiving. I think I'll go out of my way to eat there at least once.

As business owners they have the right to refuse service to whoever they want irregardless of the reason IMHO.

Regardless I believe they should have set conditions for the campaign before saying an outright no. I have done some coordinateions for visits of politicians in the past. The host sets the property rules and if the campaign don't agree they move on to another venue. By doing it that way you don't get slammed as bad by perception either way. As mentioned the restruants main customers may have resented what would have might appeared as a endorsement. I suspect they are not suffering to bad. Boohoo look at me I need you to come to my restruant and help me because I stood my ground. If I had a restruant I'd even serve Obama, but with my expectations to risky not too.

    Hold on...

How is this any different than that dessert shop that refused to serve Joe Biden on his election trail?

It IS their right to refuse business to anyone.

And of course it is our right where we spend our money.

If I went on a "political diet" of not eating at places that I disagreed with, I'd probably lose all this extra weight I carry around.

    ... screw that.

They didn't refuse anyone service. They declined having a political event at their restaurant.

They obviously Believed Differently. This is what's great about America. We are all free to believe what we want. AND run a business how we feel is best, for that venture.

I agree with you that about believing what you want, which includes running your business on your own beliefs. However you got to carefully weigh the choices. Simply stated the business did not properly address the inquiry put forth to them. When presidential campaigns come to town they often have a list of venues of interest. They sort through them they find ones that suit the needs and exposure of the campaign. If the owners rules don't work for the campaign then they move on and no harm to both parties. As others stated if they really wanted to eat there allow them to so without cameras etc.

Ok smart guys, how did we even know about this? If they got a call, politely refused, and hung up the phone, how would anyone even know?
Perhaps it was leaked by the family in order to bring attention to thier business? hmmm?
