foam plugs are by far the best for protecting your hearing and the cheapest. Get a big box and keep in your car so you always have some.
I have a set of Howard leight impact sport. they are enough for .22 rifle and various handgun. not enough for centerfire rifle. They are excellent for power tools though so don't feel bad about buying.
I usually use the foam plugs or an inexpensive pair of over the ear 'muffs. I've thought about getting a nice pair of earmuffs but I can't justify the cost.
Surefire ep4. Inner ear, allowing good cheek weld, very comfortable and reusable indefinitely. Allows you to half plug so conversations can be heard while still muffling background shots. No annoying time of waiting for foam to expand and no annoying bulk on your head

electronic caldwells from midwayusa.com on sale now and then for about $30 or less if I remember?

foamies work well and cheap. If going electronic, $200+ is cheaper than paying $3000 for hearing aides later in life.
Sordin or Golden ears get my vote.

I just go to my local Audiologist and get custom fit pugs. Think they run about $120. I literally wear mine every, single day, in and out about 20 times a day......not kidding!!
They last me in rough environment, about 1.5-2yrs., should last for a very long time if just shooting!
(and keep them in your pocket incase of a gun fight!!)
