Where does a hospital get the money to pay for all the "free" stuff?

Cost to build a hospital/clinic.
Cost of diagnostic equipment.
Cost of medications
Cost of swabs, gauze, bandages, sutures, syringes, needles, gurneys, curtains, electricity, water, heat/a-c, laundry, janitorial staff, toilet paper, pencils, forms, light bulbs,........
Salaries for docs, nurses, orderlies, admin staff.

Is there some place that just gives all this stuff away?
