So sorry for your loss.

I keep telling myself, It's just a dog, It's just a dog.

Then I find her in my lap, completely comfortable and trusting. And sweet and warm...

Darn it to heck, I think I may be in love...

His mom is a pure bred Great Pyrenees and dad is a German Shepard mastiff mix. My sister has the parents and the dogs had an accidental litter right before the dad was supposed to get fixed so she gave us one of the puppies. He has the best temperament really laid back thinks he is about 10 pounds and wants to lay on you. People think he is a leonburger or Anatolian Shepard

She's 18 months, the runt of the litter. She is a keeper, that's for sure.

We got her a Nerf tennis ball gun (shoots small tennis balls) from Pet Smart. The gun is perfect for in the house, it's not too powerful, launches the ball across two rooms, and gets her the exercise she craves.

It's great, until Rosie crashes into the Christmas tree chasing a ball....

Yes, definitely looks like a keeper! It looks like you may be lucky that her nose retains its color. My girl?s nose started losing pigment between 12 and 18 months.

My girl only fetches a few times for me. She really prefers to wrestle and play fight with me. She won?t do it with anyone else. She will eventually stop fetching and initiate some wrestling.

Here are my vicious pups. Luna the Brittany and Finn the GSP.

Luna is turning out to be a pretty darn good bird hunter. She's just barely a year old now, but she's a quick study. I hadn't even started to train her to point but she did naturally on her first hunt. Even honored the other dogs on her first hunt. I'm super excited to see how good she gets with more training.

Finn will to, but he'll have to wait until next year, he's only 5 months. He's a big dumb clumsy baby now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191224/7980a1e2b98111a85709f2b1f493ada0.jpg

Holey Moley...

Took the pup to the vet tonight for a check-up. He's not even 6 months old...and he weighs 65.6 lbs. [panic]

He's gonna' be a big boy.
79837

Had a training class with the breeder last Sat. and there were 2 other pups from a litter about a month behind his with a different mom. Duke was about twice the size of their pups and you could see the panic in their eyes wondering if their pups were going to get that big (probably won't). He's solid muscle and appears to be going through another spurt growing his frame. He gets longer, taller, and leaner...fills out...gets longer, taller, and leaner...repeat.

Really bummed, was back at the vet Tuesday to have Reba checked out and it sucked. She hates going to vet and gets pretty cranky about it. Muzzle cranky and dad is the only who can handle her there until the muzzle comes out and she just sighs and gives up. 110#'s of dead weight GSD.

We took her in about 3-4 weeks ago for lameness in front left leg. Diagnosed as ligament/tendon strain in elbow. Treatment - steriod/anti inflammatory and rest until swelling down and pain gone. Pretty much back to normal about week ago, we started back to play/work out very slowly watching for signs of pain/discomfort. All seemed good until Tuesday morning and she could barely get out of her kennel.

Vet got us in late Tuesday and this time I insisted we do xray. Turns out she has a Ununited Anconeal Process and it requires surgery to correct. Most common in large/giant breeds. Burmese Mtn dogs, GSD, Labs, GR.

Turns out I noticed a symptom/indicator between 4-6 mos and we and the vet flew right by it. Would have been ideal to fix at younger age.

Have appt for consult/exam next week with Colorado Canine Orthopedics in COS. Going to be expensive and suck. Large young GSD's make crappy patients.

Of course Reba doesn't get it, she just knows that dad won't run, jump and wrestle like he's supposed to and the eyes shame me. Even injured she would still go all out.

OUCH!!! Poor girl. Yeah, they don't understand taking it easy for healing. We had a GSD that just wouldn't quit even when he was about 12. He would try to keep up with us on camping trips and would just go-go-go...until he couldn't. He so wanted to be with us and was always willing to please.

110# is really big for a female. I hope queen Reba heals well and this is just a bump in the road to a long and healthy life in your pack.

buffalobo

So we had surgery done yesterday.

Only good things to say so far about Colorado Canine Orthopedics. We went down for CT scan and consult with surgeon last week. Afterwards the surgeon called us at home for discussion of results so we would not have to make the trip to Springs just for discussion. Very through, scanned right leg as well, found similar issue to left but not immediate problem and can be addressed after full recovery of left leg.

The clinic itself is great. Very efficient checking in and out, nice, comfortable, private consult/waiting rooms, lots of space, well layed out. They have put alot of thought into keeping everyone comfortable and at ease. Made a great difference in our experience, Reba doesn't like going to the vet and is not shy about letting everyone know it. She showed some reluctance in our two trips to the clinic but was completely compliant and cooperative with the techs and docs. The staff does a great job handling the dogs and the dogs respond to it.

When we picked Reba up after surgery they had a go bag ready with everything we might need to care for her after getting home. A personalized(They put Reba name and pic on front) discharge instructions folder, layed out in outline/time line format. Again it is very through with explanations of surgery, do/don'ts, tips/hacks, includes all meds for first two weeks, fancy boot for outside(we used an IV bag with top cut open and gauze threaded through for boot on heeler), ice packs if needed, contact numbers for info, techs, surgeon, everybody. Surgeon called us at home about 8PM to check on how she was doing and if we had any questions or concerns.

IMO, the service and care matches any I, myself would expect receive at a quality hospital.

Bottom line, we feel we are getting great service and value for the large bill we paid and if the level of service and care continues throughout Rebas recovery we will have the other elbow done at CCO if it becomes necessary.

Nice pups! Love the markings on the GSD.

I don't know what it is about the GSDs I've had in my life, but they're so damn smart. I'm amazed daily at the vocabulary that our pup is learning to understand. Out of a wad of toys we're able to tell him which one we want and he grabs it and brings it to us. He's also really good at picking up on our regular behaviors and how to anticipate where he needs to be and respond.

Just need to get him past the 'puppy brain' moments when meeting other people and dogs. More socialization is the plan to help with that.

buffalobo
02-18-2020, 19:45
So Reba got the bandage removed last Thursday but dad made her wear the Elizabethan collar until yesterday morning. Wanted to protect wound site and let leg/skin acclimate and hair grow back a little more. Other than cleaning/grooming she has left wound site alone and I can barely see where incision was.

Good report from surgeon and vet, another couple weeks of lite duty then can slowly bring back activities over following couple weeks.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200219/625b21c1888485606c79a547dd6b7f0a.jpg

Glad to hear Reba is doing well.

I noticed some odd popping in Gus' hips a week or two ago. Made vet appt, had xrays. He's got really bad hip dysplasia and he just turned a year old last week. Not showing any signs of pain or discomfort yet. He generally runs around the house/yard like his hair's on fire. Vet wasn't confident there was much that could be done for him in terms of surgery due to some other issues with his femurs being very curved/deformed.

We'll try to mitigate it as much as possible as he ages. Totally bummed for the little guy.

And here I thought Popcorn was just a couch dog.

Last night about ten we were on our last walk of the day. She shot into a bush, came out and around and chased something up the fence surrounding a tennis court. I looked up and was surprised to see...

My lil 20 pound couch potato had treed a coon! Well, not treed exactly but she sat below it barking her squirrel bark. The racoon looked at me as if asking what this loud little thing was and my reply was, "Hey, you're the clown dressed like the Hamburgler."

I was very proud of my little hunter. Turns out the hunting hound instinct hasn't all been bred out.

And yes, I am aware a pissed off racoon can injure a dog much larger than a Beagle. It's the first time we've seen one on our usual (4x per day) route. I'm going to need to be careful what the pooch sticks her nose into, this being The Apocalypse and all.

04-12-2020, 20:45
I'm not sure. My brother went over to feed the cat and found the crap all over the place. He found it in the basement where the cat comes in, but didn't see the cat. I think he assumed it was fighting the cat. Hopefully not because I'd bet on a raccoon every time. I think we'll find out tomorrow.

Fentonite

Yeah, I figure that raccoon would make short work of most cats. And quite a few dogs.

Irving
04-12-2020, 20:48
My brother wouldn't shut up about how heavy it was. I told him they easily get twice as big as that one.

One on One and a cat can be a handful though. Our cat held off the same husky that killed the chicken a few years ago. Office cat spends a lot of time cruising the neighborhood though, so she might not have been around. Security cam footage of the raccoon walking all over the office at 2:30 am though.

I'm shaking up a 32 oz. bottle of hot sauce last night to kick up my chili. The dog runs over and wants some. I put some on my finger and my dog ate it....and liked it. He's also tried spicy pork rinds and liked those. There's also a saying that dogs won't eat pickles, but this one will.

Is there such a thing as a "South German Shepherd"?

LOL... We had a yellow lab at one time that the ex was trying to stop from chewing things. She wanted to put hot sauce on things. I told her he'd just eat it and want more. And he did. He would've eaten the whole bottle if we let him.

I once left a Craftsman electric staple gun on the back porch for like 5 mins. It was plugged in and loaded. I was using it on some indoor/outdoor carpet. Went inside for about 5 mins and came out. Electric cord was chewed off the gun. There were dents with teeth marks in the sheet metal housing of the gun and Otis, the dog, had a staple thru one of his ears. I just shook my head.

^^ There's actually more to the "Otis" story. When I get a dog it's for life. Good or bad. But we just couldn't handle this dog. He was out of control. We took him from a friend as a 10 month old puppy as a favor. We had no idea what we were getting into.

We made the gut-wrenching decision to take him to a shelter. He was a gorgeous yellow lab and I knew he'd be adopted quickly.

I got him to the shelter and didn't even make it inside. A lady with two boys, 8 and 10 ish, was arriving at the same time. They boys wanted to pet Otis and it was love at first sight for everyone. Long story short, she took Otis from me along with all of his "belongings". She lived south of the metro-area somewhere on an acreage and ran a hobby ranch with her husband. I felt horrible about giving up on a dog but it was done and he'd be in a better environment. I still felt very guilty...still do.

About a year later, give or take, I was working a graveyard shift at the sheriff's dept. I went to the 7-11 at Coal Mine and Wadsworth for a cup of coffee. I was sitting out front putting some notes on paperwork. Guy in a pickup pulls up next to me and goes inside. I noticed a big yellow lab in the cab watching him intently. I got his attention, he poked his head out of the window and then just went apeshit bouncing around inside the cab and barking and whining. He sure looked like Otis and acted like he'd known me his entire life. I was standing next to the truck petting him when the guy came out. I mentioned that Otis was a beautiful dog. The guy said, "Yeah, he's gorgeous but he's the biggest pain in my ass I've ever had. My wife adopted him and brought him home and her and my sons would kill me if I did anything to that dog. And he won't let me leave the house without him."

We made small talk and he told me about his ranch and how Otis got to swim in the pond, etc. Real Cinderella story for Otis. Obviously I knew it was him after the story. I always thought it was strange that I did something with him I'd never do to a dog and how I agonized over the decision to give him up, but how it worked out best for the dog and everyone else in the end. Mysterious ways.

One of my yellow labs disappeared today. He's not the brightest dog but he's always come home except once when he went after something and I found him on someone's deck who wasn't there (summer cabin deal) maybe half a mile away a few hours later That was over a year ago.

He's 2 and a half years old, still a pup really, but he's a 60 pound lab so I doubt coyotes got him.

Been searching for hours. I'm crashing on the couch now hoping he comes home. His bud has been sulking for hours. I hope he doesn't know something I don't want to hear.

A breeder near Woodland Park, she's 7. Thank you. Very sweet disposition, was quiet in the car all the way home, she's a good girl. Hangs out mostly with my girlfriend, and that's what I wanted.

We brushed her this morning, she just stood quietly, there is hair everywhere.

She had her last litter last year and she's so sweet the breeder wanted to keep her but they have a business to run and she deserves more attention than they could give her with all the other dogs and puppies around.

I'm guessing they retired her?

There are a number of breeders out in those parts. The first one we dealt with was a Lake George address and parvo really devastated their litters. We got our pupper from a breeder in Florissant. I've even seen where breeders will adopt out females for free, with options to breed them later. Dog breeding is an 'interesting' business.

I'm sure your new girl will enjoy the attention you give her.

roberth
05-17-2020, 09:53
Yes, retired from High Country. High Country had a parvo problem last year. I talked to them about a couple of the survivor pups they had, those pups were claimed shortly thereafter.

She's a starter dog for me, just perfect, house trained and all that. She'll help me learn about dogs, girlfriend has a decade of experience, she's my first. She'll help us with the male we're probably going to get in a year or two.

Gman

High Country is the one. They called us about taking one of the survivors. We weren't sure if there might be long-term affects and we already had a handful with the youngster we're still training. Our pup that died "Zeb" was of Texi/Hemi parentage. Your girl looks a lot like Olive.

Awesome dog toy.

Items required:
1-medium to large size dog
1-Gold Peak Tea beverage container

Instructions:
First, open and consume tea product
Then, drain remnants and remove label from bottle, and the cock ring from beneath lid
Then, install 3 or 4 driveway size rocks
Then, install 1 fishing pole jingle bell
Then, install oversize colored drinking straws cut into pieces

CAUTION: THIS DOG TOY SHOULD NEVER BE UNATTENDED WHILE YOUR DOG IS PLAYING WITH IT

However, our dog has had more fun with this damn set up than most of the toys we've purchased for her....except perhaps her Kong purple Squiddy. Which I highly recommend btw.
Oh, and get the tea in a six pack so you have five more back ups. The bottles they use are uniquely accepting of powerful dog mandibles for several hours.

Question for you dog lovers.

One of my 3 yo labs is constantly licking his paws. It's not just one, it can be any one of them. He has no injuries, thorns, etc. It appears to be some sort of obsessive thing. It doesn't appear to be having any ill effects, but it is annoying the hear the "shlomp, shlomp, shlomp" of him licking all the time.

I've done some reading. It says boredom may be a cause, but he has another 3 yo lab here with him and all the neighborhood dogs are pretty much free range so there's a lot going on around here dog-wise.

Any idea on how to stop this? I got the spray stuff to deter chewing on furniture, etc., but not sure if that's a good idea on paws.

Could be allergies. One of our dogs does it too, vet said to give him a Claritin every day. WalMart has a store brand that's the same thing for about 1/3 the cost.

Benadryl works too, but you'd have to give him 3-4 per day. Claritin, only one.

Definitely ask a vet though! When I give pills to our dogs I use cheap ground/chopped canned dog food. Scoop out about 1/2 spoonful, wad it into a ball with the pill in the middle, and they'll suck it right down.

We played fetch in the snow. Ball would disappear when it landed and doggo would nose it out of the snow. Only lost 1 until it thaws. He loved bounding through the snow. I kept my feet dry where I shoveled a walkway. Good times. We wanted a bigger yard for the pupper and mission accomplished:

Reba loves to plow snow with her nose, until she plows into a toy frozen down under the snow.

Been battling weight a little. Up around 120-122 lbs. Seems to carry it well but we want to keep weight in check for her later years when she will be battling arthritis. Spring we will figure optimum and keep her there.

We just got back from the park, and the little stinker took over the big boy chair.
