This thread is killing me. In a place where dogs aren't an option. Too busy to give them the attention they deserve. Been a herding/snow dog fan. Pics are great and keep them coming. Living vicariously through them.85095 85096

Drives Mrs bo nuts, Reba wants to be outside most of the time(especially if wind blowing, it brings the hated tumbleweeds which she attacks) regardless of conditions. She loves the snow and shoveling snow, waits for me to throw shovel full of snow and then jumps at snow while flies through the air. Makes shoveling snow a major PIA as sometimes she crowds me and difficult to avoid whacking her with shovel. If made to stay inside whils shoveling she will run from door to door or door to window raising hell to go help.
During thunder storms she will stand in middle of yard and bark her "warning" bark at the thunder and run toward the direction thunder came from. Of course she gets soaked by the rain and doesn't care, much to the chagrin of Mrs bo.

I thought it was just my GSD with the shoveling. He growls at and tries to bite the shovel, and then jumps in the air to attack the snow I?m throwing. Was some heavy wet stuff. Heavy enough to knock him backwards on one throw and it didn?t deter him. I have to put him in the house if I want to do it in 1/3 the time. I?m afraid of cutting him with the steel edge of the shovel.
During thunderstorms, he would run out the dog door and bark at the sky when the thunder was loud.

If I break rhythm shoveling she will scold me and charge in to attack the shovel. I sweep the deck to avoid damaging it, she will bark and attack the broom after I finish and lean broom against wall. Like she is telling the broom to get back to work or come out to play. I find the broom laying in the middle of the yard if I wait too long to clear the deck.

The greatest bird dog I ever hunted with in 40 years of hunting and the best friend I ever had she was the peyton manning of bird dogs. I hunted with people that spent thousands of dollars on professionally trained dogs like you see on the hunting channels and she put them all to shame. There was no escape from her she could find a bird a mile away in the thickest nasty shit you could imagine and she would find it. God I miss her.

Who knows with the dog food. I did TONS of reading on dog foods years ago when I got my lab. Ended up with her on an expensive grain free, limited ingredient, high protein diet her whole life. No "meal" of anything. No "by product" etc. I wanted to give her the "best".
Diabetes still got her when she was 8. Rally bad too. She only made it another 8 months or so after diagnosis, taking shots twice a day before I had to bring her in for her last vet trip, blind and terribly under weight.
Every dog I've ever had on Purina died of simple old age and not some sort of disease.
Limited data for sure, but I've got my current dogs on Pro Plan. We'll see how that turns out 8-10 years from now.

We probably won't have another dog because of the responsibility of making food to ensure their health
I can understand that. I wouldn?t be making food for them, either. And to be honest, I would have to be a nutritionist to even try to formulate food that I cooked (or fed raw) for my dogs. Even then, my homemade food wouldn?t be backed by feeding studies. Dogs eat the same thing, every day. It has to be complete and balanced or they will have problems.
Recent research raises concerns about grain-free diets and a linkage to DCM heart problems. I?m switching my 3ys off of Fromm Gold because of the potatoes and being one of the foods indicated in the study.
We?re not ?fur baby? people, and you don?t have to be to realize a lot of money and heartache down the road can be saved by spending more to feed well now.
With that being said, there are good foods out there that have been proven in studies. They are made by nutritionists who publish peer-reviewed research. I would recommend looking for that food that meets these higher standards. Look further than dog food advisor.
If you are researching food, read the AAFCO statement on the bag to know if it has been through feeding trials. Look for foods that follow WSAVA guidelines.

I thought Eukanuba was higher end stuff, are we wrong?
Iams and Eukanuba used to be good foods, but formulations and recommended nutrition changes over time. It depends upon which Eukanuba formula you are feeding.
Most of the Eukanuba I see contains a few things I try to avoid. Corn - cheap ingredient, but also is a risk of aflatoxin. Wheat - inflammatory to some dogs. By-product meal - think about what the raccoons in ?Uncle Buck? said about hot dogs (lips & assholes). Eukanuba has had a few recalls, which is a blemish in my opinion.
I?m ok with fish meal or chicken meal, just not the by-product meal.
I?m feeding Purina Pro Plan to the pup. My vet refuses to recommend Purina, but I feel the PPP lines are held to a higher standard. Purina has had a ton of recalls, but not PPP. The ingredients are good and they are backed by research and staff nutritionists.
If not PPP, I would probably be feeding Annamaet.

I was feeding Taste of the Wild High Prairie (grain free) to my Corgis from the beginning. They always did very well on that food, especially the look of their coats...very shiny and smooth. Then, one of the females developed some sort of gastro issue shortly after moving here. Vet is still unsure of what caused it.
She's now on a hydrolyzed protein food that seems to mitigate the problem (Royal Canin HP). Luckily it's really inexpensive, too. Only $95 for a 25lb bag! [/sarcasm] Fortunately, she only eats a cup a day so it lasts for quite some time.
I've since switched from TotW to Diamond Naturals All Life Stages Chicken and Rice. It seems to be well regarded by experts and pet owners and the others are doing quite well on it. And, it's substantially less than TotW. I pay about $35 for a 40lb bag...TotW was about $46 for 28lbs.
Choosing the right food for my dogs is something I constantly worry over.

That switch from TOTW was a good call. RC is a good food. My dog?s breeder recommends and feeds Diamond. If I had a kennel full of dogs, I?d consider it also. We all worry about feeding the right stuff, and many manufacturers capitalize on that.
TOTW was one of the brands implicated in the DCM study. Basically, dogs who have no genetic predisposition to DCM were getting DCM, and the common factor was grain-free diets. The hypothesis is that the legumes used in these and the higher level of plant-based proteins is somehow impacting the dog?s ability to create taurine, leading to dilated cardiomyopathy.
See Section 7 below.

Yep... Diamond makes a ton of different branded foods. Formulas/ingredients are different.
Here are the good and the bad.
Good: Much of the protein comes from meat (and meat by-products). The calcium and phosphorus ratios are proper for large breed dogs. It is formulated to meet AAFCO guidelines for Growth of LB dogs. It is a grain-inclusive food, so it avoids possible problems with taurine deficiency and DCM. It has DHA for a strong mind and Omegas for a wonderful coat and immune system.
Dog food advisor loves that Eukanuba Puppy Large Breed Activ Advantage. I personally think DFA applies their ratings inconsistently. This rating alone gets a lot of people to buy it (Mars is the largest dog food seller at around $18B revenue). I wouldn?t stop there, though.
Here are some things for you and the wife to consider. Maybe it matters to you, or maybe you?re OK with it. Only you can decide.
I care about recalls.
Eukanuba has had some recalls including Salmonella. You also remember years ago the melamine contamination from China that killed many dogs? Eukanuba was included.
I care about by-products.
Eukanuba uses meat by-products. They are an inexpensive source of high protein, but I would rather not feed my dog beaks, legs, offal, etc.
I care about Aflatoxin.
Aflatoxin recalls are fairly consistent. There is a fungi that grows on grains, especially corn, that isn?t easily identified. The fungi makes the toxin, and it often passes undetected. I would prefer not to feed a food with corn in it, just to reduce the chances of getting into aflatoxin. Corn is the third ingredient in Eukanuba.
In summary, you could find a lot worse for dog foods out there. This one has a solid formula for your large breed pup. Some of the ingredients are there to meet a price point. The company has had some significant recalls.
Yep... Diamond makes a ton of different branded foods. Formulas/ingredients are different.
Exactly this. I would not feed TOTW because they are grain free and recent research points to a linkage between grain free diets and debilitating heart conditions. Until that is sorted out, I would feed a grain-inclusive food that avoids corn.

I actually switched to the grain inclusive High Prairie TotW. Harper's gastric issues started some time after that. I have no idea if it's related.
I worry and worry about what to feed them. Then they go out and eat goose and turkey poop from the neighbor's birds like it's a doggie delicacy... *Sigh* I'm probably over-thinking the whole thing.
Yes, bird and bunny poop seems like a delicacy. I keep Fortiflora on hand to sort out those bouts of the Hershey squirts.

DNA says 25% Australian Cattle Dog, 25% unknown K9, remainder is Amstaf. The Cattle Dog is very strong though. She herds anything that moves. And is incredibly protective of our family. Thanks! She's a rescue from the Denver Dumb Friends League 9 years ago. They got her from a shelter near the Springs. Didn't know much about her but she was house broken and had most of the basic commands down. During my initial meeting with her she spent about 4 minutes sniffing around the visitation room then came over and put her head on my lap-done deal LOL. When I brought her home she adapted to us immediately.
She's always been partial to women before men though once she knows someone is cool she likes everybody. A great watchdog, very protective of the home, me, all family members and especially the grandkids. The little ones can lay on her, hug her, whatever they want, she likes to be near them whenever they visit.
Was over at a friend's house last night. His German shepherd found the first skunk we have ever seen over there. Joy
You know the saying about 'curiosity killed the cat'? I have to believe that German Shepherds are just more durable.

Meet Burgie, 14 week old Chiweenie my younger son and his soon to be wife recently adopted. I got to puppy sit a few nights ago and this was the few seconds he sat still until he collapsed lol-you can see his tail going a mile a minute. Very sweet little dog, after he's fully vaccinated tomorrow he and Ziva can meet. He's perfect for their apartment lifestyle.
I'm a "big dog" guy, all our family dogs were on the larger size. Both sons now have little dogs but they have big attitudes.

Laying in the pathway of foot traffic is a thing, man.
Damn right it is...that cartoon illustrates a day in my life with 4 Corgis perfectly. I've said "Make a Corgi hole" so much to my dogs that they actually get up and move out of the way now.
Laying in the pathway of foot traffic is a thing, man.
That's why the next dog I get is going to be named 'Indy', short for 'In-de-way'.
So Ziva always used to sleep in the hallway between the bedrooms when my younger son still lived at home. After he moved out she started sleeping in the bedroom, I would bring her bed in and she would snooze away. I bought her a bigger, more comfy bed to help with her hips and left it in the living room. Once the warmer weather started up she moved back up to the bedroom sleeping on the floor at the foot of the bed. She then started moving around the room a bit. Now one of her favorite spots is shown here. And she's got a snore going on LOL.
https://i.postimg.cc/vBtxNLk9/BEE0EE59-976B-402E-B206-5B53E31E5BF0.jpg (https://postimg.cc/njMLs7Hc)
My old yellow lab does the same thing... She is 14 now and is pretty slow getting around. I keep buying nice comfy beds but she lays just like that with her head under the bed. I will move her dog bed to that spot and she will go to another spot around the bed where she can put her head under and snore. I even set it up so she could put her head under and still lay on the bed... not good enough rather just lay on the carpet.
That's why the next dog I get is going to be named 'Indy', short for 'In-de-way'.
And that's why my boy's primary nickname is 'Chief Underfoot'.

And she's been doing this thing the last few months that is getting more intense it seems. Sits upright on her but in front of/ next to me so I start to scratch her chest. Then the paw game starts.
Paw on my knee, paw on my forearm....switches paws and repeats. I'll put one hand on top of her paw, she removes paw and puts it back on top of my hand again. With the idea in her head that no, this is how it's going to be right now, dammit. My forearms are scratched and bruised up more than I'd like, but I love her. She's almost adamant about the game.
Weird.
Ziva does a very similar thing, she weighs between 80-85 and it’s like all her weight goes into her leg/paw when she drapes it over my arm for the chest rubs lol.
Also every night between 9-930 she gets a wild hair, grabs her ball and goes nuts for about 5-10 minutes playing with it, dropping it form to throw or not dropping it to play tug of war!
Dogs can be very funny beasts.
Love it when my dog climbs up on my chest while I'm sleeping on my back and puts all of his weight on his elbows digging into the edge of my rib cage. Love it. LOOOOVE IT!!!
I'd bite my dogs in the face if they did that. Get the message across that I don't like it.

Feel bad for the pup today. She had to go to the vet for some routine stuff, and in order to do that, we doped her up a bit. Still couldn't get her claws done, but the rest of it was completed.
We don't want to dope her up anymore, it's unfair to her and we feel shitty about it. Never again.
She's 83 lbs now, even the Vet commented that a female Cur shouldn't be that damn big. We said Yeah, we know.

What did you sedate her with?
Ziva gets her yearly checkup on Saturday. I know the vet is going to recommend a teeth cleaning. At 11 yrs I don’t want to put her under anesthesia again. I’ll just keep brushing her teeth.
If you do decide to get a cleaning, I would at least wait until Feb, when it is National Pet Dental Health Month. Most places offer great discounts then.
You remind me that I need to start working with the dogs and their electric toothbrushes. I?m going to try to get them used to it, so they get a better brushing at home.

What did you sedate her with?
It was Diazepam, recommended by the vet last time in order to try and get her to calm down for visits and nail trimming. Doesn't work on this girl, she's a total asshat when it comes to messing with her feet. We don't understand why, we spent time with her when she was little messing with her feet trying to get her used to it, but it never settled with this dog. In another thread I mentioned getting sliced up on my arm today because of her claws. I wish we could get her to accept maintenance on her feet without all the hassle.
Our GSD gets snarly about his feet too. Try to get him used to it, but he's having none of it.

I wish it were easier for me to post pics here, but Lilly knew I was upset watching coverage of the 20th 9/11 and she hopped up on the bench for some consoling and love. It's a cool pic that my lady got.
Our dog is highly aware of our emotional states. Once he figures out were not mad at him, he tries to help make us feel better and will come over to snuggle and lick your face . He really gets concerned. It's pretty funny to watch.
Could I get some Dog advice, please?
My brother owns a Blue Heeler pup, less than, but approaching one years old. This is the most aggressive dog I have ever been around and he will not take no for an answer.
I have dog sat him a couple of times, and my brother now has asked me to dog sit him again for 3-4 days.
Unlike my bother, I live in an apartment without a back yard, so we, the pup and I are in very close proximity when I am home. I really have no escape.
The pup is crate trained, and I have placed him in the crate when I cannot handle him, but he can/does continue to cry for attention, if he wants to.
I've tried locking him out of my bedroom, and leaving the rest of the apartment to him, but he can and does open the door (I am googling door jammers.)
Anyway, I realize this is a pretty tough question, but if any of you all have suggestions on how I should treat this pup, who will aggressively nip, bite, and otherwise force himself on me, all the time, I would appreciate it.
Anticipating questions, I do walk him, of course. I have his crate open during the day when I am at work, and at night when I am home. I have used it as "punishment" and/or I just cannot handle you anymore.
Thanks for any advice.
Aggressive like he wants to play?
Aggressive like he will not leave me alone, for a second. And if I stop petting/playing with him, he will nip/bite, force himself on me.
Personally, I'd tell my brother I wouldn't watch the dog anymore until he trains it. Easy to say from my position though. Others need to chime in.

We've broken all our dogs from nipping very early by wrapping their top lip around into their mouth when they get to nipping. Then they bite their own lip when they try to bite you. They hate it. Works like a charm.
Do that a few times when he's getting carried away and in a couple days he's gonna stop getting so carried away. He's probably still going to want to wrestle since it sounds like that's the sort of dog he is, but within the limit you've set.

lol, thanks for your suggestions, Irving and Hollohas :)
I plan to tell my worries to my brother tomorrow.
I will suggest training, and see what he says.
I'll also offer him Hollohas suggestion of lip biting.
If he refuses to do either, I might refuse to dog sit.

Sounds like a typical Heeler. They're high energy, highly intelligent, extremely driven and they need CONSTANT and CONSISTENT reinforcement until they're "trained". Most people don't have the patience or inclination for a Heeler but have them because they're really "cool" dogs. They also need constant stimulation.
The ex had one. That dog pretty much dominated her. Her idea of training was screaming at him. It was great fun for him because there was never any negative consequences to his behavior. With me, I could just look at him and he'd become submissive and calm...because he knew negative consequences were real.
They're really good dogs for someone who likes dogs a lot and for someone who doesn't mind working with them a bit. It doesn't take a lot of effort...just consistency. They really respond well to positive reinforcement because they're so driven. And they're extremely loyal...pretty much a one person dog from what I've seen.
The nipping thing is very common to that breed...they're a herding dog and that's just what they do until they know they shouldn't.

Very cool, Bailey Guns.
Do you have any suggestions on what I might do when dog sitting a blue heeler, for a few days, in a limited space apartment?
Thanks!
I'm thinking that I need to set absolute boundaries, and to me, that means a leash, and a hook into a stud in a wall. I'm thinking that it should be close to his crate, so he can go there if he wants to, but also see me.
I will use this as my ultimate form of punishment, when he realizes that I am unhappy with him, but he still won't stop.
In the evening, I will get a door jammer for my bedroom door, and give him the rest of the apartment. Hopefully this will result in him spreading his crying against multiple neighbors, instead of whomever is unucky enough to be next to his crate.
Bailey Guns
09-17-2021, 22:19
Not really. But from your first post it sounds like the crate thing is a bit of an issue. That needs to be a happy place for him...not somewhere he goes when he gets punished or you get tired of him. It's gonna be really hard when you only have the dog for a limited time, but I'd keep the crate in the bedroom and keep him in there during bedtime. Try positive reinforcement as often as possible.
That's a great suggestion and one I would never have thought of. I have a waterbed, and the first time he came up on it, he didn't like it. If he can retire to his crate and still be near me, that might work.
Thanks.

Dog might be wanting for attention or a familiar chew or toy. Your description of attitude suggests to me that you're lucky he doesn't tear your apartment up while you're away.
At times our Cur gets adamant about restricted toys and has outbursts over it. They are restricted because she starts eating them.
Not being the dogs owner with better knowledge of the animal, I'd stick with not sitting for him until he's more manageable. It's cool that you're willing to do it, but sometimes trouble borrowed just isn't worth it unless you want to start taking on the time needed for training. I know kennels are expensive, but it is part of inviting an animal to be a member of the family. It is your brothers responsibility after all.
Good on you though.
He did chew up a bit of my couch last time he was here, and I find the reason he doesn't have a favorite chew toy, is because he destroys them all within minutes, or it seems.:)
I'm curious about the training you all are referencing. Do you think that would stop this behavior? My brother is currently unemployed, so I could ask him to take the dog for training. I work 8x5, and could take the dog to training, after that. My dog sitting starts October 7th, so I have almost 3 weeks. Could I/we, make a difference in 3 weeks with proper training?
Re: the kennel. I do have one very close by, and am tempted to turn around and take the dog there, instead of trying to deal with him. But, I would rather try and figure this out, like a puzzle.
Thanks

IMO if you want to take this on, you need basic commands....treats...and lots of time for progress, and positive affirmation to the animal. Training will help him understand he's not the boss....I'm not a pro on this, just trying to help. Get some hard rubber chew toys and bones instead of fluffy stuffed animal toys.
Kenneling will help the animal socialize with other people and other animals. Bailey had good points to heed.
Thanks all. Extremely helpful.

There are tons of videos on YouTube re: training dogs, specifically Heelers, and dealing with their specific issues. It's really hard to give advice without seeing the dog and watching how he reacts to certain things. Generally speaking, when he misbehaves (like when he nips) correct him sternly but calmly and redirect his attention to something else. Make him sit, for example. And when he does give him a little treat (doesn't have to be much...just a piece of his kibble or something like that).
I can't stress CONSISTENCY enough...in your commands, your body language, when/why/how you correct his behavior, etc. That's probably the hardest thing to do.
There's a book out there, very old school and probably out of favor with the times, but from a very talented dog trainer. The ideas and reasoning are very sound...I bought a copy back in 1989 (I think) when I needed to train an incorrigible black lab...turned out to be a fantastic dog.
https://www.abebooks.com/Koehler-Method-Dog-Training-Certified-Techniques/31000906464/bd?cm_mmc=ggl-_-US_Shopp_Textbook-_-product_id=COM9780876056578USED-_-keyword=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnJaKBhDgARIsAHmvz6cEQz_-iJkktyUkVJ69Z0QQLwa2FPA-ZhGx5CltQvEhXI9Y2ywEBwwaAsfMEALw_wcB
It's an easy read and has some great information.
The type of training you need is formal obedience training. I would recommend sit means sit, so you both learn e-collar training. Unfortunately, it costs a small fortune and your brother is between jobs. Find something affordable with a professional obedience trainer.
Watch Donna Fenzi on YouTube.
Don?t use the crate as punishment.
To deter biting, you can pinch their cheek into their teeth. If he is mouthing your whole hand, stick a finger down his throat to gag him. They learn pretty quickly.
That dog needs exercise twice a day, up to an hour. Real exercise, not just a walk on a leash. Find something to mentally stimulate him so he gets worn down. Get him to run and stretch his legs, too.
Be consistent. Absolutely, unwaveringly consistent. Set a high bar for expectations and consistently enforce it. Dogs thrive on that structure. With time, that dog?s energy and persistence will be channeled into obedience.
Good for you for helping out your brother. If it wasn?t a family member, I?d flat out refuse to watch a neglected dog like that.

Unwaveringly consistent is a great point as well, among the others.
The dog will come to expect it regularly.

Yeah, until the dog stares at the space heater for hours expecting the led to move.

Firstly, I'm not mean or stupid enough to aim a laser at the eyes of any person or dog. However, that information is something I did not know about and I thank you Frac for sharing that.
Laser goes back in the junk drawer.
I never thought that you would shine it in the eyes.
Unfortunately, this one is from experience. My sweet Bella is a little neurotic about any spots of light. The sun comes in and reflects on the wall off of your watch face and she will sit and stare at it forever. Poor, sweet Bella.
Here she is helping me pack for a hunting trip.

I have those same gloves.
Have a couple pairs. Those gloves keep me warm like no other. If it gets cold, I just put an adhesive body warmer inside the glove on the backhand side. They are perfect for shotgun or rifle.
Had a little cold snap last year in second rifle and these gloves were all I needed.

The laser did tire her out, but I don't want her developing psych problems because of it.
Thanks, I'll look up the book.
His parents (my brother) does bring over treats for Oreo, but I don't use them, so thanks for the suggestion.
From my perspective, I have been pretty consistent in, don't bite/nip me. But I have not given him an alternative. Maybe/Hopefully your book will elaborate on that.
Thanks
The type of training you need is formal obedience training. I would recommend sit means sit, so you both learn e-collar training. Unfortunately, it costs a small fortune and your brother is between jobs. Find something affordable with a professional obedience trainer.
Watch Donna Fenzi on YouTube.

Thank you very much for a great number of suggestions and ideas, Frac.
I thought of one thing that might be perfect, and meet at least two of your criteria; keep him busy/exercise, and give him training.
My local veterinary clinic has training classes. I have seen folks out with their dogs etc. I wonder if they offer classes during the time I am taking care of Oreo?
Both exercise and training (and out of the house, socializing with other dogs?)

Anybody use or have experience with goggles for their dog?
Reba has Keratitis, she now gets "drops" in her eyes twice a day and vet recommends using goggles to protect from wind and sun.
Looking at Rexspecs after buying a couple cheaper goggles and having fit issues.

I haven?t had that challenge before. Sorry to hear about her eye problems.
General idea on something like this is to slowly get them conditioned to the glasses. Take small steps. Use your sit command. Put the glasses on while she maintains sit. Praise her while she is calm. Then take them off - but only when she is calm. Give a treat if she?s treat motivated. Other dogs will do fine with praise motivation. The goal of this step is to teach her that good things happen when she is calm with the glasses on.
Make sure you end each session on one of the times she does it right. No need for negative reinforcement yet. You?re trying to teach her that calm is good. Keep the sessions short. A couple minutes a few times a day. It might take a week for her to understand calm.
Once that concept is down, you move forward. You can use a simple no if she needs corrected about calmness, because she should now know that you want calm when wearing glasses. The next step is to start to associate wearing the goggles with the stuff she loves to do. It doesn?t have to be outdoors stuff. Just do something she loves to do, and do it wearing the glasses. If she loves to go for a walk, put the glasses on. When she?s on, tell her it?s time for a walk. Keep sessions short at first. Make sure she is beginning to associate the glasses with a walk.
After that goal is accomplished, start working on literacy. She knows glasses for a walk, but she needs to learn it in new situations. Go take a car ride to DQ and get a pup cup. Go to the park. Fetch a ball. Let her sunbathe in the backyard with them. Keep practicing the same principles in new situations.
Don?t be afraid to back up a step if she resists. You might even have to revisit the calm sit once in a while to maintain literacy.
That would be my approach from my limited experience.

We think about our pet future as well, and good thing we did. We give her Eukanuba large, adult, chicken. Chewy has not had it in stock for over six weeks now. We paid $60 for 33 lb bag and had it on auto fill until they ran out of it. Found it on amazon for $118 from thieves. Thankfully the nice rep at Euk turned us on to Farm and Fleet. Yeah, dog food has been constrained, like everything else in the Covid world. It's difficult to just change a dogs food at the drop of a hat. On you and the dog.
I had to chuckle about the training instructions for dog goggles, aka doggles. My 2 year-old GSD doesn't understand "calm" in pretty much all situations. He has a state of "Guard dog reporting for Duty!" and "Sleeping like a log." He can transition those states extremely rapidly. On his timing.

FYI - I?m not recommending dog food advisor for the content they provide, but I do use their notification for dog food recalls. Heads-up if your feeding Fromm cans.
We always stock a few cans of their dietary support formulas in case one of the pups gets a case of the shits.
?Fromm Family Foods is recalling approximately 5500 cases of its canned dog food entrees because they may contain high levels of vitamin D.?

I am dog proofing my apartment now. My brother just texted that Oreo will be here tomorrow night around 8-8:30, which I would prefer earlier so I get some quality time before the night, but it is what it is.
I did watch some videos on youtube. What do you think of Cesar Millan?
https://youtu.be/ax_j0OQYXBE
I think I got some good concepts from that video, but I don't think I can set my expectations as high as the results he achieves, but I do think it will help me from a theoretical standpoint.
Also, rather uniquely, I have the $5 spinning steel targets that were the Amazon special on here a few weeks ago. I'm going to set them up tonight and hope they give him some entertainment when I am at work (rather than chewing on my couch.) lol... I wonder if this will work :)
Ya'll have given me lots of practical advice, and I appreciate it.
He's sleeping on the couch next to me, which has never happened before. Last night he slept fine, next to my waterbed. All doors fully open, etc. Frac suggested this.
I've tried to use a lot of Cesar Millan's principles of establishing dominance, consistency, follow through, etc., and while not perfect, he is starting to understand I am not inconsistent in telling him no, and that I will follow through, and be consistent.
I reward him when he is being good, and ignore/correct him when he is being bad.
I am trying to find ways to relax the situation, rather than escalate it.
I feel that he respects me more, and I in turn, am understanding his behaviors better.
We're doing okay, thanks a lot in part to ya'lls help. Thanks.
Glad to hear it?s going well so far [emoji1360]

On our night walk, we came around the tennis court and found these two fellas. The big one was sitting until my lil hunter started going apeshit. Then he stood up. I went, "whoa!" and tried pulling Popcorn away. She wasn't having any of that, she wanted to chase them.
In the picture on the bottom left, you can see her mid bark/howl. It's her hunting bark, an incredibly loud "barooo" coming from a 22 pound dog.

Lilly is hit or miss on making the racket. Sometimes loses her mind, sometimes just sits there and watches them intently.
I don't get it.
Our GSD goes nuts when we see deer driving through my folks golf course neighborhood. He's scanning out the windows of the truck as soon as I turn in. His bark is so loud in an enclosed space it hurts my ears.
Can't imagine him being on leash encountering wildlife. We've decided to get him snipped. Too much T running through that animal when his drive kicks in. First male dog I've had that wasn't snipped early on. He's over 2 years old and we need to dial him down.

I don't worry too much about the deer, they quickly out run Reba and she gives up unless I tell her to pursue. It's the moose we encounter pretty regular when up at State Forest that concern me. They don't run away and don't back down. She doesn't like that I force her to give them a wide berth.
I?m still doing some trash busting with my 1 year old. We have encountered bedded deer a couple times while grouse hunting and he loves to chase. He?s getting better about stopping when I tell him to, but we need more work.
Yesterday, I barely hit a bird and he chased it 275 yards until it landed, snatched it up, and brought it back. He had room to run, so I let him go. I don?t want to burn a young dog when he might get confused. While I?m really impressed he made a retrieve that long, I am going to have to work on him NOT running off after hens, etc.

Gotta love his play ground :)
Looks like I have Oreo duty again soon. This time we are at his house, which includes a back-yard and a near by park.
And two cats.
How did it go last time with Oreo?
Medium. I tried to establish dominance, but he is almost impossible to control.
I had the same number of bruises, etc. as I normally do, when he is around.
There were some huge wins, as I did not close my bedroom door to him. He slept on the floor, as he does not like my waterbed.
Never used his crate for punishment, etc.
We did fine.

Having trouble finding her food in stores again too, dammit.
Our dog is sensitive to chicken...and they put it in so many different foods, even if it's not featured on the label. Sometimes in higher quantity than the other meats listed on the bag.

Some friends/neighbors of ours have a young GSD, don't know if he's snipped or not. But as a puppy, I sat him one night and we had a great time! But now, he wants to attack EVERYONE and EVERYTHING he sees.
Encountered him and his mom on a walk one day, he went nuts. Then he got away from her and came after my Beagle. All he did was bark in his face like a psycho, but I had pistol in-hand and was ready to end his existence if he actually attacked either one if us.
I told Katie he came close to going away right then, and strongly suggested she get a stronger harness and a muzzle, as a lawsuit from an injured party would be far worse than losing the psycho.
Now she walks him with a muzzle and a real friggin' harness.

My younger Golden is also sensitive to chicken. Unfortunately, almost everything has chicken protein or fat because it is so cheap. All these places that I visit have people who want to give the dog a cookie, but he can?t have them.

You cannot control a GSD with a harness. They need a choke or a pinch collar, especially if they need training and correction. I have had Shepherds all my life and have been training them since I was 12. That is an owner with a dominant dog, that has no respect for the owner. You have to be the leader of your pack. My mom just got a male around 3 that was not properly trained. After 3 days of me coming over he behaves perfectly, when I am there. Consistency is the key. If you let them get away with something sometimes, they will play the odds.
By consistency, just to make sure I am in the right frame of mind, when the dog is doing bad, and he just won't stop, and he fights my discipline, I need to continue, and actively chase him down and demand submission? I've done this (once) with Oreo, where I wanted to tell him that I will not stop telling him this is bad.
I think this is in the realm of needing a pro trainer to weigh in. When I read your description, it sounds physically confrontational. Not in the sense of beating the dog, but in the sense that the dog might feel you are cornering it. It is possible the dog will react aggressively.
You need a pro to weigh in on a physical approach, versus attrition, versus obedience.
A quick example could be obedience. When training a field dog, if it refuses a command, I correct ?no!? And then issue an obedience command (possibly with eCollar pressure) ?sit!?. This usually brings the dog back into an obedient mode. The next command is more likely to be obeyed. This works for me, because I train ?sit? to a nearly compulsive level. Over and over until the dog does it without thinking.
Without seeing this dog, the way it reacts, and what exactly you?re doing, it would be irresponsible to tell you the ?right way?. A pro can help you with ?tools? to sort that out.
Training is a process. Small, consistent steps. It is possible to push too far, too fast, or with too much pressure.
Sorry I can?t help you more than that.
UncleDave

Number one when training the dog should be on lead, and you should not have to chase him. Two, if the issue is when he is off lead then a training collar (shock) needs to be used so that he cannot outrun correction. All of my Rottweilers have had to spend some time with the e-collar. What I mean by consistency is if you give a command that is not obeyed then correction comes without exception. You have to speak to them in their language. Treat them the way the pack would, shake them by the scruff of the neck till the scream. I had a friends American Bulldog that was very aggressive, and he did not know how to deal with it. After week I told him to let her loose. She lunged at me a few time without me moving or showing any fear, which confused her. Then she stiff legged up to me with an aggressive posture. I let he get close again, and I grabbed her by both cheeks and bit her right on the nose until she screamed like a puppy. After that she never misbehaved around me again. In fact she jumped on my lap every time I came over. She just needed to know my place in the pack, and more importantly her’s.
Thank you both. It seems like more formal training is in order.

Some of you know Calvin. He had to have emergency spine surgery. Suddenly went lame and was screaming with any attempt to move him. Unfortunately, I was out of town. My bride was able to get a friend to help load him into the car and she got him to the hospital. After x-rays, ultrasounds, and an MRI, they figured out that he had a bulging disc that had gotten infected. The infection ate the disc and much of both adjacent vertebrae. Luckily, they had a great neurosurgeon on staff who was able to operate the next day. It's been a slow recovery, with a long way to go yet, but he's happy and getting better every day. I've been sleeping on the floor with him every night that I'm home. He's in better spirits than I was after a lesser surgery!

Well yeah, them white Caucasians are actually worse than the white Hispanics (like Zimmerman and Rittenhouse)

Just say the post about Calvin. Poor guy. The Corgi herd in Oklahoma is wishing him a swift recovery!
Way too warm today. But still beautiful. Finn here sure had fun. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211127/45bb3c1c4d6d53169931db6af0f46110.jpg
Ugh, yes! 71 degrees Friday afternoon. Equipment problems means we missed the morning hunt. He put up two roosters and I flubbed an easy shot.

Did he let you off the hook or give you the look?
It has happened enough times this season that I think he?s starting to roll his eyes. LOL
He will watch them fly off and then he doesnt want to follow my direction. Instead he wants me to follow him in the direction of the bird. He knows what we are after. He just doesn?t understand property lines or that the bird likely flew a mile away?

My uncle had a German short hair that was awesome in the field with pheasant but would give disappointed look if you missed the bird he got up for you. If you had a bad day shooting he made you feel ten times worse.
My uncle would shake his head and chuckle, "you know you sucked when the dog comes home mad".

This is my other dog, Luna. She doesn't retrieve, she leaves that up to the GSP Finn. She's really small and just can't handle big roosters. She finds the birds, locks on solid point and watches them fly but doesn't care if you shoot them or not cause she's off to find more as soon as she hears a shot.
The GSP honors her perfectly and will run through anything to retrieve birds. He's still learning to mark where they fall but doesn't give up if he can't get right to a dead bird the first try.
Pretty good team these two. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211128/70ab5001408cf0e9c7b54153a526e870.jpg

This is my first hunting dog, so one is plenty. But I?m sure it?s fun to watch them work as a team!
I think the retriever hunt tests we did all year helped with marking. He does pretty well unless the grass is over his head.
The rooster from Friday was just winged. It led Cody on a 100 yard foot race across the cornfield. This boy can take credit for most of my birds this year. There?s only a couple that I would have found on my own.
Did lots of puppy and kitten fostering during school closures to distract the kids, but our big dog did most of the work.

I missed this thread for a while. Sorry to hear about Calvin. Hope he's making good progress!
Was busy dealing with life. Our doggo is finally healing up after his neutering a couple of weeks ago. Been stressful on everyone.
Those are some handsome looking puppers!

These are my dogs, Jack and Harley. Jack (in the canoe) is a Belgian Malinois and Harley is half German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois. They?ve been great for us and our large family. Harley just had her first litter too! So that?ll be a fun new adventure.

Tell about Harley and goggles. Med condition? Extra protection for active/working dog? Brand of goggles? How much hassle training to wear?
Do to med condition vet has recommended we get goggles on Reba.

Left-to-right (Two years ago). Mozart, Packard & Lincoln. It was very rare to have all three STILL at the same time.
Lincoln (was) the Best Dog ... finally had to put him down at 16, last year.

Wife's dog (our dog) crossed that bridge a couple weeks ago. Now the bird calls his name all day. I think she misses him too (even if it was just someone for her to antagonize).

We used to have a long haired German shepherd when we lived in Divide. He developed pannus and was basically unable to see. The Rex specs block UV, which can cause eye issues. Also, they wear them when we hike since they just run through brush and such…I feel better having their eyeballs protected. Jack took to them pretty easy. He still fights it sometimes if he wears them awhile and his face itches. Harley isn’t a big fan but if she’s distracted…she doesn’t seem to mind.

Thanks for your efforts.
