BigBear - way cool name for a dog. My wife loves boxers. She used to have a boxer named Tyson(even looked alot like Drilldo's Tyson he posted with his little girl)

Drilldo - showed my wife the pic of your girl and boxer. She said it made her day.

Glad your wife liked the pic of Tyson and Elliana. Lots of boxers named Tyson lol. When I picked him up from the breeder in Cheyenne, the first thing he did was bite my ear, hence Tyson.

Tyson and Snoop in balmy N.D. by our plant.

Great looking beasts, one and all.

Who takes thier dogs hunting or shooting?

Buddy hates hunting. He gets mad whenever I harvest/shoot pheasants, doves and especially rabbits. Less critters for him to chase.

Doesn't like to go to the range. Hates the noise, he jumps up in truck and puts his head under the tool box. We stopped taking him when we figured it out.

I got Snoop too late to make him a hunting dog, basically he was a rescue dog from an ex. He would probably be great at it though.

Tyson would probably make a great hunting dog. I never trained him in it though. He just likes to eat the squirrels and rabbits that venture into his domain.

I don't take them shooting. They are just my big, furry friends who love their dad and protect the house and family.

I would love to have a good bird dog, Michelle wants a GSD, just don't have the room for 4 dogs right now.

I (mostly) agree with roberth.

Newracer - that is an awesome looking dog.

I also think that scratchy's dog is amazing too.

The only dog I've had since moving away from my folks was a Maltese that my wife got while I was serving in Korea. I wasn't fond of the "punt dog" initially, but he really grew on me and I was devastated when he passed in 2003. Since then, my wife and I decided that the walking, picking up poop and either taking a dog with us or kenneling them when we go on a trip just wasn't worth it any more, so... No more dogs for us.

I want a wolf.

My dad has one; it's weird to be around. Her mannerisms are intense, and it's a trip watching her instincts kick in. Pretty neat animal, but not one I would want. They have a hell of a time keeping her in, but when she does run off, she always comes back. The howling is neat though...

They are just real temperamental, uber dominant, roam... There are a couple around here that are a problem. Had a friend with a husky/wolf. That dog just wasn't right.

There is a wolf rescue outside of Durango(?). Go visit.

I'd almost rather have a pit.

Finally...I found my Corgi pup. No fancy papers or nothing, but she's a princess to me. We named her Isabella after a 13th century Princess of Wales. Her maternal grandfather was the 1st Earl of Pembroke. So I thought that would be a good Pembroke Welsh Corgi name.

Meet Isabella:

As much as I'm a fan of mixed breeds (they tend to be healthier over the long run in my experience) the only pure I'd ever get is a Rott. Wonderful dogs. My girl tends to act more Rott than Lab but she's definitely a wonderful combo of the two. I know I've shown her before but she's so cute she deserves another pic lol.

Awsome pup.
Full GSD?Full GSD, mom short hair all black 90#, dad typical color, long hair 110#. She was only girl and largest of litter. 14 weeks and 40#. We are hoping her early growth and paw size are good indication she will be large. Loyalty, size and strong natural protection are primary traits we were looking for.

As we are back to empty nesters after more than 3 yrs of caring for elderly family, Mrs bo needs companion and protector while I work.

We are more than pleased so far and look forward to training and growing together as family.

Edit to correct weights, seller over estimated parents IMO.

Very glad she is starting to show some maturity and obedience to voice commands off leash. She has become very protective of Mrs bo and even challenges me a little if I enter the house differently than she is used to.

This was our first GSD. Just really always wanted one. I'm no expert at all, but if you've never had one--here are a few things I'd mention.

(1) Plan on getting a really good vacuum . . . they shed like absolute mad. It's never ending.

(2) The pups often go through a "land shark" period . . . they chew on EVERYTHING. Furniture, shoes . . . you. Try to redirect them to specific toys and train them on "no" or "off" or whatever. Seems like our just stopped chewing as fast as he started. But we had heard they did that and sure enough, he did. He destroyed all sorts of stuff.

(3) Be sure to get into some decent training and execise them. They are wicked smart and like to work.

This is not my first GSD. The wife and I both grew up with them.

We have a good vacuum, but I've found that regularly brushing them mitigates a lot of it, most frequently in the spring when they lose their winter undercoat. The back of the back legs can yield an amazing amount of fur.

Yeah, puppies have needle like teeth and will chew on pretty much anything available. The trick is limiting what's 'available' by putting things away and limiting their environment early on. It's also good to teach them while they're still young what is or isn't an appropriate level of biting force when they're interacting with you. Also directing their focus to what is there for them to specifically chew on and away from what they're not.

They're smart dogs, bred to interact with humans, and it's really not too difficult to get them to understand what you want from them if you're consistent in your direction. I teach them to fetch early on. It allows me to work the dog without wearing me out. [Coffee] I'm not sure what it is about me, but my dogs understand me. It gets to the point that I can just give them a look, or a look and a point, and they know what I want from them. GSDs are whores for positive attention. I find they want to please their humans.

They're also understanding of their 'pack'/family unit. They seem to be instinctively protective, so it's important to train them to where introductions with friends and neighbors are understood to be accepted as not a threat. This is also related to barking when someone is at the front door. Once we've acknowledged that someone is there, stop barking. If we haven't acknowledged (like if we're not home), feel free to keep barking. That's called the K9 home security system. [panic]

My wife says that this is my dog and she wants to get one a little later. I hate to tell her this, but they'll both probably end up being 'my dog'. [LOL]

Buffalobo, that's a funny comment about weaponizing Corgi cuteness.

To all of you that have shared your thoughts and sympathies about Cenzo's passing, thank you.

It has been a brutal few days and there are reminders of the big guy everywhere. Some etched into my memory and heart, others scratched deeply into my hardwood floors and front door.

I went to do some slow bullseye shooting yesterday to try to clear my head. As I tried to focus on my front sight through bloodshot eyes, steady my hands, control my breath and squeeze off my shots, I began to feel just a bit better, if only for a little bit. Then I saw my targets... Ugh.

I realized that he and I were both far from perfect, but we shared a common bond. We didn't always get along and sometimes even were at odds, but we shared a common bond.

That's really too bad. Parvo is really terrible on the young ones, many don't make it through it. It happens but doesn't leave me with a good feeling about the breeder. I field trial Spring Spaniels so I spend more time than most folks around the four legged critters. Will also keep my ears open though most of the breeders I know breed for field trial work and they do get expensive. Best of Luck.

I've always had neutered male dogs. One of the reasons was that females have a higher tendency to kill your lawn with their urine since they tend to urinate in a smaller area when they squat. Neutering a male is also less invasive.

Others are related to distinct musculature and size differences in some breeds. I can usually recognize a female GSD just by the look of them.

I was just reading about differences between male and female GSDs. One of the recommendations was to adopt a female if you're not familiar with training your dog to establish the correct pecking order in the pack hierarchy. Females are a bit more 'chill' and sensitive and have less of a tendency to being dominant. There was also a mention of male dogs being more attached to the single family member that trains, feeds, and gives them attention. Females were typically more 'pack friendly'.

I believe its breed dependent. We've had English Shepherds for years and they've all been male and extremely easy to train. Apparently female English Shepherds can be hard headed. However everyone we've known that had labs, the females were easier.

So you'll want to investigate the traits of various breeds.

Hahaha that cracked me up !!!

There is a spot near the entryway, just outside the kitchen that she is scared of. I have no idea what it is. There is nothing on the hardwood, it has never changed in her short life but a few months ago she started avoiding it like a ghost is standing there. She will walk slowly up to it, pause with her head low, then BOLT past as quickly as her lil legs will go. Since it's wood there is no traction so she does cartoon burnouts everyday, trying get past the scary spot.

Ziva just turned 9. Since she was a rescue we arbitrarily made 9/1 her birthday. She's been in the family for 8 years now and couldn't ask for a better pup. Sweet, playful, happy, a great protector and best of all she's wonderful with the grandsons. Looking forward to her being a guardian for the granddaughter arriving in November. The solo pic was taken Sunday. The second pic is her with Honey Bear, my son and dil's 12 yr old Puggle. Also a very sweet and funny dog. I dog sat two weekends ago while the kids went to a wedding out of town. Ziva tried to take HB's bed but she wasn't having it LOL.

Princess looks cute. I like the slash of black from the corner of the eye. A distinctive feature.

Dogs are funny. Whenever you come back, no matter how brief the separation, they're so excited to see you. They act like they thought they'd never see you again.

We had a few tough nights until Reba got used to kennel. Even slept on floor next to kennel a couple nights.

These days she goes to the kennel on her own and will even chuff or bark if we forget or wait too long to close door.

No kidding, BG.

What was your secret to getting Reba to take to her 'den'? We've tried food enticements. He settled in once and I closed the door and he made an enormous racket. He stuck his paw out and I held it until he fell asleep. That's the only time we've been able to get him to use it.

We have 3 kennels available to our dogs. The oldest Corgi and the heeler have laid claim to 2 of them. The others go in and out frequently on their own to get away and nap. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how we got them accustomed to going in. They just did it on their own for the most part.

Tell the heeler "puppy house" and he damn near knocks everyone over trying to get into his kennel. With Izzy we have to practically coax her to come out. I think they like the peace and quiet in there.

He stuck his paw out and I held it until he fell asleep. That's the only time we've been able to get him to use it.Mostly just time, repetition and a few extra treats. A little tough it out while she fussed. Few nights one of us layed/slept next to kennel. Mrs bo found a YouTube channel with long strings of music supposed to be soothing that Reba seemed to respond to.

Probably 7-10 days total with first 4 nights being rough.

Helluva lot more effort than our departed heeler. Brought him home, told him kennel was his spot and he went to kennel anytime I went to bedroom, for 15 yrs.

No idea if this would be a sound recommendation but my mother kennel trained her dogs by feeding them in it & never put them in as punishment. She also covered 2 sides to give them privacy. Probably all obvious suggestions.

They now prefer to nap in their kennels as adults during the day & will enter & exist on command.

We have a cover for the crate...and he likes to tug on it. We put shirts that we had worn inside to make it 'familiar', but no joy. He pulls the shirts out (probably thinks he's rescuing them). Put his food in it and he didn't touch it. We can get him to grab treats from the inside, but he doesn't settle into it. He's happy to sprawl out on the floor.

He's limited to the family room which has the dog door to the back yard. Finally got some sleep last night and he went out twice on his own. At least getting him to go outside on his own has been pretty much effortless. No accidents after being here 2 days.

He loves to bite at my shoes and pant legs while I'm trying to walk. He's taken a couple of short air trips and had his toes stepped on twice. I'm hoping he'll figure that out before he takes me down and I squish him.

ChickNorris

Maybe he needs to be a little more hungry?

Gman
09-12-2019, 11:09
Unfortunately he has to be eating regularly right now. He has a little giardia in his system (not uncommon in CO) and gets probiotics on his food and 1/4 of a pill wrapped in a bit of cheese twice a day.

At this point he'll either eventually take to it...or not. We're going to keep trying.

I'm planning on wearing him out a bit in the yard and we'll see if he can handle being on a leash down to the mailbox and back.

Great looking puppy!! Is he past his LAND SHARK days yet? GSD's are great to train. The first thing I teach is how to hold eye contact the second is who is the dominant one in the pack. Mine is one of the best gun dogs I have ever had, she loves going to the range with me.

He's still in the fur shark stage. He's not breaking skin as often, but he's still at it.

He's a treat whore, so he stares at the treat when it's in the hand. I will hold the treat up to my eyes or put it behind my back to make sure he's making eye contact when I train him. Really smart and does great with sit, stay, wait, and come. Working with him to make sure he knows his default position when we're on walks.

I've been popping air ballast around him when I get an Amazon shipment to make sure he's desensitized to it. What kind of ear-pro do you use on the dog when you go to the range? [Coffee]

He knows who's alpha.

TheSparkens
10-29-2019, 19:11
Its the dog and the training. I started Gabby early with things like pots and pans and introduced her to more and more noises. I think it may be because she hunts birds, its funny because she doesn't " point " but she will lock up and then flush then go to retrieve and she doesn't like the bird in her mouth and she will drop it about ten times before getting it to you. Alone in the field, she is great but with other dogs, she thinks its playtime.

Erni
10-29-2019, 19:14
He may see you as alpha, but wait till his testostorone hits. Unless you want to breed him, fix him before that happens. Ours went from obedient pup to insolent teenager in a week. He would test me on everything.

He started humping his bedding at week 11. Must be crazy having to grow that fast and deal with the hormones at the same time. I tell him "NO!" and he barks back at me. The insolence is strong with this one. I see the defiance in his eyes, even though he caves and gives in.

We were contemplating waiting for 18 mos. for neutering as there are some vets that think waiting will create better bone density and possibly avoid hip and elbow issues. We discussed with our vet and there's really no science behind that idea. At this rate, he'll likely be fixed when he's 6 months.
