View Full Version : Love them dogs
Just wait, I am house sitting Oreo for the next 10 days... there might be blood. ;)
There was some blood, but mainly because I didn't understand his aggressiveness in the back yard. Still don't quite understand it, I guess he was doing a "stranger" defense in the back yard. Now that I think about it, it might have been territorial. I was just taking out the trash, and on re-entry, he was extremely aggressive.
When I was leaving the house for the last time Sunday, I took out the trash. He was extremely aggressive as I walked back through the back-yard after taking out the trash. Growling, nipping, biting, etc. I could not keep him off of me and resorted to kicking him (close range, not much of a kick, more a push with my leg.)
So then we are in the house, and I am looking for any loose ends I need to clean up... all cool. I called him over to say goodbye, he came, and attacked me, bit me, and drew blood. That's how we parted, after a relatively uneventful week.
Dude needs help, and I know you all have told me he needs help, but I struggle to tell my brother. I do think I can safely tell him that I am now done with Oreo, unless he can mellow him out/train him.
That much I have learned, and I do think I will tell him this at Christmas Dinner.
Sorry to hear that it ended in blood. Make sure you see that dog?s current rabies tag. There is no cure for it. If it isn?t vaccinated, you need to get to a doctor asap.
My little man is branching out. Going to try waterfowl with some friends this week.

This is Harper. AKA: Hopper. She was my little, tiniest Corgi. And she was a spitfire. Harper was not quite 4 years old. For about the past 9 months we'd been struggling with some sort of auto-immune disorder that had 5 different vets baffled. We did what we could to mitigate the illness but apparently it wasn't enough.
Harper died yesterday morning at about 3:30 after having what I think was a stroke and/or a seizure. Man, do I miss her already.
Some people say dogs (and animals in general) don't go to heaven. Well, I don't believe that for a lot of reasons. Personally, I think heaven was in need of a sweet little Corgi and Harper was chosen. I also think heaven is now a happier place.
Harper had a habit of wanting to have breakfast around 4:30 or 5 every morning. She wasn't shy about letting me know she was ready to eat. She wouldn't be ignored, either.
I hope they like to get up early in heaven...

Had to put our 9 year old GSD down last night unexpectedly.
He had some bad days last week, but seemed to have returned to his normal, chipper self by Sat. Thought he just had a stomach bug or something. Yesterday afternoon, he was really lethargic again and not eating--and was breathing heavier than normal. Took him outside and he just wanted to lay down. Ran him to the emergency vet . . . ends up he had masses on his spleen and stomach that had ruptured and fluid around his heart. Wasn't going to make it through the night and we didn't want him to suffer. Knew that day would come with his age. Wasn't ready for it to come that fast.
RIP, Ranger. You were an awesome dog.

Some of you know Calvin. He had to have emergency spine surgery. Suddenly went lame and was screaming with any attempt to move him. Unfortunately, I was out of town. My bride was able to get a friend to help load him into the car and she got him to the hospital. After x-rays, ultrasounds, and an MRI, they figured out that he had a bulging disc that had gotten infected. The infection ate the disc and much of both adjacent vertebrae. Luckily, they had a great neurosurgeon on staff who was able to operate the next day. It's been a slow recovery, with a long way to go yet, but he's happy and getting better every day. I've been sleeping on the floor with him every night that I'm home. He's in better spirits than I was after a lesser surgery!

Calvin had a relapse / recurrent spine infection. He had another MRI this morning, and is back in the hospital on IV antibiotics overnight (as well as a ketamine/fentanyl drip overnight). Prognosis is 6 months of Antibiotic injections 3x/ day for 6 months, hopefully that will do it. Just thankful he?s still here for now.

Yeah, dog in the foreground is like, "I don't know what the hell happened." Dog in the background is like, "Ohhh crap. They know I did it."
I'll never admit it to the wife, but our house has been a bit empty lately. The bird has a habit of calling him (just to talk shit), but he won't 'round the corner.

^^ That's great! She'll be much healthier now. I have a Corgi that needs to go on the fat boy program. I seriously don't know how he gains weight. I feed him EXACTLY the same amount as I feed the other boy. Gus is 38 pounds and Scout is 28 pounds...all his blood work is normal, everything's normal. Maybe he's like Cartman...just big boned. :)
The little man had a vet appointment for a lump that had grown on his hip. I could tell it was painful for him. I was worried about cancer because Goldens are prone to it?
The night before his vet appointment my wife told me I needed to check on the dog?s hip because it was red. Sheesh. Yea, blood red. So much for the scheduled vet appointment. Now we need the emergency vet.

Ouch. Good to see he's healing up!
Had to take our pupper to the vet this week for a dental checkup and deep cleaning. He's been the biggest baby ever since he came out of the anesthesia. I can understand since a dog explores the world with their mouth and their power and defense is delivered through their jaws. He's doing much better now, but GSDs can be such drama queens.

Drama queens is an understatement. Especially if spoiled already.
Reba was sleeping in the garden while we were planting/working yesterday. Mail man drives down the road to the house to drop off package too large for the box. I met him at yard gate put packages in yard, shook hands with mailman, he got in van closed door and dog woke up as he drove away.
Damn dog spent next 20 mins patrolling yard barking. Had to get on her case to knock it off.
I think she was "embarrassed" she got caught sleeping on the job.

We’ve been mainly going by color colors, but the kids have “named” a few. The two black ones are back Jack and black Betty. The first pup has a blue collar so the kids call him Litte boy blue. The next one down has a brown collar and distinct eyebrows so they call him Eye Browns. The small faced Black and Tan girl is Pinky Pie.

Today is the date I appointed as Ziva's birthday since it was unknown when I adopted her in September 2011 when she was roughly 1 yr old. She's been an absolutely great pup-friendly to the right people (especially the grandkids) and not so much to those she doesn't know/trust-she's very protective. What better way to celebrate than hanging out with her best little buddy Burgie.

We are having a great time. That?s him, lower left. He was a madman this morning. Thankfully, he is cool about waiting for me as my fat ass stops to suck wind.

Popcorn rolled in the grass today. Or so I thought.
Turns out it was a hole filled with rotten grass clippings. She stood up covered with slime.
I wiped her off as soon as we got home but all that did was ruin a towel. I gave her her fourth bath ever. She did pretty good- didn't try to escape and just sat there.
Nope. Still stinks. She decided she needs to lay in my lap and my nose is burning.
Next step is either the dishwasher or clothes washer, not sure which...

Our doggo ended up with aspiration pneumonia. Hasn't gone away with weeks of antibiotics. He's scheduled to go in next week so they can knock him out and do some form of pulmonary lavage on him and culture whatever is resisting the antibiotics. That damn dog is so expensive.
But he's in advanced obedience training and doing well with an E-collar...and we love him.

Update- Pop still stinks.
My eyes stopped watering but she still smells like the bag of lawn clippings that you forgot to set out last week.
I went into the bathroom with the tub I used to bathe her and it smells horrible in there as well.
Next step is shave her bald and scrub her skin with a wire brush and some ammonia. Or, let her lay on the couch all day. Still trying to decide.

Try the recipe to get rid of skunk smell.
1/4 cup of baking soda.
1-2 teaspoons of mild dishwashing detergent like Ivory Snow.
1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.
Mix in a bucket and use immediately.
Work the foaming mixture well into the coat.
Leave on for five minutes.
Rinse with warm water.
Follow with dog shampoo if desired.
Sportsman?s sells a skunk remover shampoo. Maybe that would clean up the smell
Just thought I'd post up, here's my boy Kaiba, just got back from a wellness check on Thursday and he has Pannus.
Pannus is an Immune System reaction to UV light as I understand it. I find this so weird as my boy is a house dog, we go out and get our excercise but he lives inside with the rest of the family. Anyway, drops twice a day now and UV glasses if we don't want a blind dog later in his life.
I did some research thanks to this thread and will be getting a pair of the RexSpecks, they seem to be well thought of. If there's a better option I've missed, I'd like to hear about it.
Great picture! I have never heard of that ailment before, it sounds manageable, it would be great if he got into wearing the goggles!
Make sure to share some pics of him with the specs!
Well Ziva developed a lump on her upper right jaw virtually overnight. Last week she had a biopsy, waiting on the results. The canine dentist told me that while she was under anesthesia they thought they detected another lump on her spleen. Taking her in next week for an ultrasound on that. She's been a great addition to the family the past 11 years (she was roughly 1 when I got her). Right now her behaviour is completely normal, great appetite and her regular fun playful self. Hoping she's still got some good time left with us, depends on what the biopsy and ultrasound show.
Here she is the day I brought her home

All the Corgis send their love to Ziva. Goats, too. And us people will say a little prayer as well.
Thanks all, heard from the dental vet today. It's not great news though it's not horrible either. It appears the mass is a rather rare variety and as such she is going to have a canine oncologist look over the results. Frankly she feels the mass on the spleen is the bigger issue. I hope to know more about that next Wednesday the 23rd when we start with an ultrasound. The best word I can send along is that Ziva is still acting completely normal and happy. I'll update next week, thanks again.
I hate it when dogs get sick. Keep her happy and best of luck!

Sorry to hear about Ziva. There's a nurse at one of the offices we frequent that has an older dog at the office that has a number of benign tumors. It seems weird, but the dog isn't in any pain. Hope Ziva doesn't have anything severe.
Ziva is doing just fine, no signs of any kind that she doesn’t feel like her normal self. Here she is resting after playing outside in the snow with a neighbor’s young dog after dinner this evening.

Looks like Ziva is headed for surgery on the 13th providing no changes. Had a pretty emotional meeting with the surgeon but she's just such an amazing dog I can't sit by and roll the dice to see if her spleen ruptures/leaks/etc which could be quickly fatal or a slow and agonizing. She's still acting totally normal thankfully, no signs of lethargy (the main sign of problems) and loved being out in this morning's snow.
Not a great pic as she's pretty well backlit but trust me, she was having fun eating the snowballs I tossed to her.

I've started getting Izzy to help me round up the goats when it's time to put them in their pen in the evening. I'm no dog trainer...she's learning to do this pretty much on her own. Seems like she has a pretty strong instinct...this is only her 3rd time rounding them up.

Ziva crossed over the rainbow bridge this morning. I found her at the Denver Dumb Friends League 11 years ago, she was roughly 1. She fit right in with the family immediately and in addition to her playful, friendly manner she was also fiercely protective of me, the home, the grandkids. I like to think I gave her 11 wonderful years she wouldn't otherwise have had.
The family always teases me that I have more pics of Ziva than any of them lol.

She started licking it about a week ago and it kept getting worse. The vet says she likely got something caught in her harness and had it rubbing against the skin. He sold me some antibiotics and a salve and a lampshade to keep her from licking it. No dog of mine is going to wear a lampshade. There's no way she would sleep in that thing, so I found a post surgical suit for her to wear.

Her butt is too big for it so I safety pinned it out of the way. She still has access to her important parts...
It took her a little while to get used to it. But as evidenced by the second picture, it doesn't seem to have impacted her ability to nap.

I believe that's called a "lick granuloma", basically a sore from licking. Snoopy had a growth removed from his front leg and licked the wound like crazy until it was a big sore too. I used Suitical recovery sleeves from Chewy, worked great. Took several months, but it's finally all healed up and he leaves it alone now.

LOL, when we got our JRT we had 4 kids with another on the way, they almost had her tamed, then we picked up a GSD about a year later, that was a good match.
the JRT passed away during the vid, and the GSD about a year later, we had gotten the 3 rat terriers a few months before the GSD passed.
Now we have the 3 adult RTs and 2 puppies left, so 5 in all, 2 puppies are much easier than 3 or 6 :D

Calvin made it through a nasty spine surgery a year and a half ago, but recently developed an autoimmune disease of the spine, causing him to go lame. He improved a good bit with prednisone, and he?s been getting chemotherapy infusions every three weeks. He can get around the house pretty well now, but can?t really run much. He still gets unsteady and falls over at times. We got him a wheelchair for when he?s having a bad day, and he freaking loves it. The first video is at his worst. The next video is in his wheelchair. It makes him so happy to be able to run again.

Calvin!!!
Oh man, that's awesome! But I ain't lyin', if a dog of mine ended up like that I'd be heartbroken, can't help it. But thank God the tech exists to help them! Those doggie wheels used to be a novelty, now they're mainstream.
Give belly rubs and some extra treats to Calvin for me!
Been pre-occupied for a while. Sorry about Ziva, Doc. Sorry about Calvin, Fentonite.
So good to see Calvin's face light up when he's able to chase down that ball. They just never quit.

I got to dog sit my younger son's pup Burgie earlier this week. I was a little under the weather, spent a lot of time on the couch either reading or watching the idiot box, he kept me company lol. He's a great little pup, now 2 years old. It seems like he still looks around for Ziva for a few minutes whenever he comes over before he settles in to his routine.

Not sure anyone is interested here, but a friend of mine has a litter of standard poodles about 6 weeks old now. Both parents on site, she's just starting to look for potential owners. Four girls and one boy. DM me if you'd like her number!

Our goal is to get ours to be a water dog. His mom and aunt love the pool, he gets a little freaked out. Luckily, I'm friends with the mom's owner that has a pool, so we're gonna do our best.

Sorry for your loss.
My heart aches for you. Still reeling from loosing Ziva in December. You guys had 14 wonderful years-their only fault is not living as long as we do.

We lost Calvin today. He fought so many medical issues so stoically, but the cards kept stacking against him and he couldn't fight anymore. We were so lucky to have had the privilege of your companionship for the last 8 years, Cal. Rest easy my boy.

So sorry to hear about Calvin. You gave him a home any dog would envy.
I’m so sorry about Calvin. As I often say we bring these wonderful beasts into our lives knowing we’ll outlast them and do our best to give them the lives they deserve for all the happiness they give to us.
My condolences. Very sorry to hear it. If you need a Rottie hug hit me up. But you better bring tons of butt scratchies.
