PBR, as usual. Only the best. [Tooth]
I might sip a little Crown later.
It's whiskey for pussies pretty much.
LMAO!
The way to introduce yourself to whiskey is get something good like Templeton Rye or Buffalo Trace, and pour only 1 finger or so into a glass over about 2-3 ice cubes.
Taste just a sip at full strength, then let the ice melt a bit to take the edge off the whiskey. Then you'll just have the sweetness and you just sip it. After a while you get develop a taste for it. Just don't start with something too smokey like the above bottle. Also, I realized I'm drinking this with my whiskey rocks, so there is no watering down of the whiskey tonight!
A summer staple...a little early.

I need to get a decent bottle and do it properly. One of those becoming a man things that I haven't done yet.
I decided to have a whiskey and cigar bar at our wedding, so I bought like $200 worth of whiskey and brought most of it back home with me. It was a crash course.
Update, had the Black Canyon with ice and it was much better that way.

A little ice really changes whiskey.
I've never been a whiskey and cigar fan. Each one separately. Cigars with beer or coffee works for me.
I often do whiskey and cigars together, when I have them, but I think I agree with you.

Well I recently decided to save a few bucks and bought a bottle of the Buffalo Trace y'all have been talking about instead of my usual Maker's Mark.
Overall I'm happy with it. It's a damn sight better than JD (which I despise ... in fact for years I thought I disliked bourbon in general because of it) and its priced well, so since I'm too poor to drink Maker's at the rate I've been drinking lately it'll do.
On a side note I whipped up a bunch of mint infused simple syrup for Mint Juleps (have a couple mint plants growing on the patio) and we picked up an interesting relative to Spearmint called "Sweet Mint" (http://bonnieplants.com/products/herbs/sweet-mint) which is as the name implies very much like a blend of Spearmint and Stevia so it's made my Mint Juleps even better. I also find myself snatching a leaf to chew on any time I'm in the back yard.
So Irving, is that Black Canyon sweet like a bourbon or dry like a scotch (I'm guessing its somewhat sweet being corn based)?
I couldn't tell you. I don't pay enough attention. However, without ice cubes to cut the edge, my first thought was that it was smoky like a scotch.
Love scotch straight up no ice or water.

^Mmmmm a well rounded dinner.
I'm on the fence about ice/water in whiskey. It does change the flavors but I like the burn.
Tried some of this last night. No nonsense bourbon that was pretty good. $20 a bottle didn't hurt either.

Give the rye a shot. Good for a modern rye. Am really looking forward to the 10 year, if I can ever find it. Supposedly the original recipe from 1830-1860. 95% rye .vs 45% rye modern version.

Well in my continuing adventure trying to find a "good-as-Maker's-but-less-expensive" bourbon, I think I may have stumbled across one that I like better than Maker's (insert gasps of "tarnation!" here).
Its John E Fitzgerald's Larceny.
http://www.alcoholprofessor.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/LARCENY-BOURBON-.jpg
Its very dry yet buttery with hints of honey (much like Maker's) but with an almost dark chocolate finish. If I can find this in 1.75l bottles I may have found a replacement for my beloved Maker's Mark (don't y'all look at me like that). Also those extra 2 proof are clearly there (at least on the palate). Not sure if this one was mentioned before (didn't feel like going through all 30 pages) but if someone suggested this one and I'm only now trying it well I should have listened. Price is about the same as the Buffalo Trace ($23.99 at the liquor store I went to ... imagine I could find a better deal if I shopped around).
^ Sounds interesting. Gotta find some.
Tried Tin Cup and didn't do anything for me. Same person that did Stranahan's (Jess Graber).
Summer tastes move to gin. Got the soda siphon double charged. Rum and tequila are a close second.
Priced like Buffalo Trace and tastes good as well? I'm down to try this next.

Meet you Total Beverage!
Enjoying some Pappy Van Winkle 20yr... Good stuff. May bite the bullet on some 23 yr.
Haven't tried any Pappy yet. Haven't seen any either. Interesting history though.
Whiskey Rebellion was last night. There was some sippin' going on. A "few" quick reviews.
Downslope
Irish whiskey- Good Irish whiskey flavor. Smooth.
Cask strength- Harsh raw flavor.
Breckenridge
All around favorite collection of whiskey samples
Cask strength- 129 proof. Smooth with a bite.
Port Barrel- Hint of port and wood. Smooth.
Breck. Bourbon Whiskey- Smooth and almost light. Finished the evening with this one, so the taste buds already had a workout.
Whistle Pig Rye- Favorite rye of the evening. Smooth without an overpowering sweet taste.
Dancing Pines Bourbon- Sweet funk. Not worth the trip to Loveland.
Angel’s Envy Straight Bourbon Whiskey- Smokey and smooth. Second favorite bourbon of the evening.
Wood’s Tenderfoot Whiskey- Salida, CO. Heavy wood flavor. Alcohol taste on the back of the tongue.
Dickel Barrel Select.- Surprisingly good. Smooth and smoky.
Peach Street Straight Bourbon Whiskey- Palisades, CO. Tie for favorite bourbon of the evening. Cinnamon, smoke and light flavor.
Leopold- I broke a cardinal rule about never drinking flavored alcohols.
Apple- Bad
Raspberry- Vick 44D. Bad
Wyoming Whiskey Bourbon- Smooth and smoky.
Feisty Spirits
Rye- Heavy alcohol taste.
Malt- TOO sweet. Skunky.
KJ Wood Blue Corn white dog- Second best white dog of the evening. Worth a trip to Berthoud.
Templeton Rye- Interesting company story. Close second favorite rye.
Hudson Baby Bourbon- Tie for favorite bourbon of the evening.
Larceny Straight Bourbon Whiskey- Good smoky bourbon. Their distillery stable also includes Evan Williams and Elijah Craig. The rep. even knew who Elijah Craig was.

Breck is my go to. Whistle pig is great but at the cost of 2 bottles of Breck it's tough to justify on a regular basis. Good bottle to have in the cabinet though.
Just bought some Tin Cup since its from the original distiller of Stranahans. Very simple blend of corn, rye, and malt barleys. It doesn't have any depth to taste, definitely could use a few years in charred casks for some smokiness. Very light for a whiskey and easy to sip. Probably due to the rye. Not quite a bourbon, not a white whiskey either. Overall, not too bad, especially for $35 a bottle. No ice needed at 84 proof, plenty of sweetness from the sugars in the corn. I would suggest it for those who are not used to drinking neat and think that Jack, Jim, & Makers are whiskeys (they're mixers). Girlfriend said to give this to her friends so she can keep drinking my Snowflake and McCallan.

Got this Liqor de Cafe on our vacation in Mex last summer.
http://www.tequilamamalucia.com/images/site/slides/ourtequila/cafe.jpg
Great stuff and smooth. Base is Tequila, much more coffee flavor than Kahlua or Baileys, plus more alcohol. So now I've been experimenting with making my own.
1st batch was more of a rough guess of adding a bunch of coffee grounds to tequila, letting set a couple of days, then straining. After that I added some simple syrup and had a go. Was good, a little bit rougher and slightly more bitter that the original. The sugar water does well to cut the alcohol content in half and mellow the tequila flavor. It makes some truly dangerous stuff, easy drinkin and potent. The family universally loves it. Now I have formed a recipe for the second batch.
1 Liter White Tequila
1 Cup ground coffee (dark roast)
mix and let sit for a couple of days. After that I will be adding
2 cups Water
1 cup brown sugar
2-3 tablespoons vanilla extract.
Then I proceed to drink vigorously. Will keep you all updated on how it turns out. For my gringo friends out there, "Liqor de Cafe" is mexican for "Coffee Booze". The latter is what I will be calling my creation from now on.
ha, neither am I. Usually if someone hands me a cold beer I will drink it. Cold is my only request.

I decided to try Tin Cup and I am woefully underwhelmed. I'd much rather have Wild Turkey 101 or Buffalo Trace.
Went to a charity auction yesterday at Arapahoe Park and picked up a tour and tasting at the Breckenridge Distillery. Get a couple pieces of glassware and a bottle of bourbon and vodka from them. Wife and I will head up in the summer and probably spend a night up there, make a weekend trip of it. Never tried their bourbon, and I'm interested in seeing where it's made.

it's not a whiskey, it's a wine.
Start with a glass rather than straight from the bottle
usually room temp (72 degrees)
chilled shot to help with coughing
be careful, it's a ninja (veddy veddy shneeky)

Colonel EH Taylor Small Batch. Now that's a damn good whiskey. I'm enjoying it neat and it's not disappointing at all. I read somewhere that a good whiskey will make you feel like you're getting a massage from the inside out. CEHT is definitely doing that.

Wild blue was good for one bottle, after that it was too much, not sure what it is, too sweet or something.
Shot of Tullamore dew and a couple beers from the Kona variety pack.

This is 100% correct. 8% of not, it might as well be Mike's Hard Lemonade.
I like to try new beer every time, but most times I go with what I know that I like. So now, I just have my wife buy beer, because she buys all kinds of stuff that I wouldn't even consider. This is actually the second time she's come home with Wild Blue though.

Agree on the Mikes comparison.
I've really been branching out lately, IPA's have been tasting pretty good. If you haven't been to Parry's pizza in Northglenn (120th just east of 25), I highly recommend it. Four pages of craft and micro brews on tap, very decent pizza (not award winning but worth it), and a nice upper level outdoor patio that faces the mountains.
I don't like IPA's, BUT there are at least two in every 12-pack mixer I buy, so I don't mind them as much any more. I try as hard as possible not to buy liquor/alcohol anywhere but the liquor store, so there is zero draw to go to a restaurant for me. Thanks for the recommendation though.
Quick question for you guys about storing beer at room temp. My wife had the fantastic idea of saving a bottle of every pack I buy and then giving them all to my brother for his birthday as a huge mix pack. His birthday is in August and I imagine I'll have a pretty good sized collection by then. Can I just store them on the shelf in my house that is usually 70 degrees until then?

Enjoying some "liquid Aloha" from Kona brewing. I've really grown fond of their variety pack. I like to start with the Castaway IPA, then move to the Fire Rock pale ale, then the Longboard Island lager, and lastly the Big Wave golden ale. It's rare that I drink more than that, but if it's a special occasion, i'll just start over with the IPA. Good stuff.

Last night's tasting of Kirkland Brand "Blended Candian Whiskey" next to Crown Royal:
After doing a blind taste test (and being pretty familiar with Crown) I correctly guessed with about 90% confidence which was which, and I still prefer the Crown, but that may be familiarity bias. The Kirkland one isn't bad, but it doesn't have the maple flavor that I've grown to like from Crown. If I score the Crown at 8/10, I give the Kirkland a 7.2/10. Lower score because it doesn't have the rich smell that I was hoping for and it was a bit harsher on the tongue. For the price, I'm pleased.

Anyone drinking pumpkin beer? Recommendations?
Had one two years ago that tasted like actual pumpkins. I'll try to remember what it was.
Don't do it is my recommendation. Just don't.
My cousin brought us a few bottles of fruity wines from a winery in Boulder (whatwelove.com), including a white sangria, a red sangria and a red mulled wine. Sipped on the red Decadent Saint Sangria yesterday, which is made to be diluted 2x or 3x with seltzer water, or sipped straight. Delicious either way, it has a very fruit forward raspberry and blueberry wine character. Straight, it is like a sweet fruity port. I like all kinds of wines and can appreciate a sweet wine as well as a dry, tannic wine. Anyone who likes sweet wines or port will like their sangrias.
It's exceptional Colorado wine craft. I'll buy more of this and would like to try making something like it.

This winery will have a booth at the Colorado Mountain Winefest coming up Sept. 17-20th in Palisade. We'll be there.
Oh yea, tonight we're sipping margaritas made with Zapopan and Espolon tequilas.

Bourbon is good for a cold. It'll kill what ails you. [Beer]
switched to 99 Cherry's tonight. Not to bad actually.

Finally got a hold of some Buffalo Trace. There has been a drought up here. Now all is right with the world. [Flame]
Did a side-by-side with some Ezra Brooks (80 proof blended whiskey) and Buffalo Trace (90 proof straight). No comparison at all. Like night and day. BT killed it with flavor, balance, punch, you name it.

Not sold locally. You must pick some up if you ever are in Texas. It is outstanding. I am now out
Yes, Blanton's is the best. How's your collection going?

Also excellent, is Stranahan's. This is also about the cheapest I've found it.

I think they might sell Rimfire at Total Beverage. Pretty sure I've seen it there.

It's surprisingly good. The stout flavors come through, not as strong as I would like but it's a good buy at $30 a bottle.
