Decided to branch out from my usual bourbons.

Variety is the spice of life.[emoji106]

Think I will pull out the Bulleit Rye tonite. After a miserable couple weeks at work, finally had a "good" day today.

The Peanut Butter Porter is actually from Liquid Mechanics in Lafayette. I had it on tap and it was spectacular, so my sister bought me a Bomber when they did a limited release.

Fruit harvest in the Grand Valley begins with apricots in late June-early July, then Peach harvest in late July which runs into September, then apples and pears. Today we made an apricot and wine liqueur. Each quart jar contains fresh apricots and a bottle of our 2015 Gewurztraminer, 2 cups of vodka, sugar, cinnamon stick and vanilla bean. It's sippin' good now but will have better fruit flavor in a week. Also made a rhubarb liqueur for the first time. We bottle these in 175 and 375 ml. bottles.

You can make good liqueurs from most any fruit--we've done peach, cranberry, apple, watermelon, kiwi, mango and various combinations. Better than you can buy in any store!

In the pic we're also drying apricot pits to extract the seeds which look and taste just like almonds.

I'll have to save some for you. Soft fruits like apricot and peach meld their flavors quickly, while harder ones like crisp apple, pear and cranberry take 3 months or longer. The Gewurztraminer grapes from Cedaredge make a wine with an amazing flavor and tartness. I wonder if it will come through in this liqueur.

My wife likes to surprise me with beers I would never buy. That works for me because it broadens my horizons.
Tonight she brought home this, which is Tecate's version of Budweiser's Chilada. It's terrible. It taste like water with a small amount of raw tomato juice mixed in. No, it doesn't taste like light Mexican beer with raw tomato juice, it tastes like WATER with raw tomato juice.

Terrible. Pass.

Blech! [Puke]

Grew up going to the local stock shows. As a kid, on Sat. morning, all the cowboys would be in the be lined up at the beer stand. They all walkied away with a glass full of something red. Asked my Mother what they were drinking.

Mom- That's Red Eye.
Me- What's that?
Mom- That's what cowboys drink when they had too muck fun the night before.

To this day, when I go to a stock show, the first drink is always a Red Eye. The beer pourer has no clue what that is but they always have beer and tomato juice on the counter. I just point and say 1/2 of each.

Made bread pudding for Xmas eve dinner. Unbeknownst to me, the recipe made room for an extra 2 cups of custard for the cook to drink while the pudding was in the oven. The custard included a total of 3oz of Bourbon (Buffalo Trace). That blew eggnog away.

Sounds like a great combination. I like blending flavors, textures, wines and liquors. Irish Cream and Buffalo Trace. Peach cordial and Buffalo Trace. Ruby Port and Buffalo Trace. There may be a pattern there.

Btw, I still have the last 375 bottle of Rhubarb cordial waiting for you. It's aging at the cabin. For sure I'll be making more next year.

Glad I didn't drink the 2 cups of "custard". Two days later, it kicked my ass.

The cabin in PV or Palisade? Looking at heading to Moab in April. PV can be anytime. [Coffee]

Buffalo Trace can do that to ya. Rich, hot stuff.

The rhubarb is here in PV. But if I'm in Palisade when you head west I can show you the garage home winery. Desert hillbilly style in metal-building-ville. On New Year's Day I bottled carboys of 2015 Cab Sauv and Cab Franc, and racked the 2016 Riesling.

No room for that in the tiny PV cabin. Still struggling with the middle of winter move into an uninsulated cabin and heating with a wood stove. Brought over a 3/4 cord trailer load of apple wood so that helps extend the spruce-fir fire.

Pic above was last evening at the Peaceful Valley willow carr where I hiked with two old friends. I sipped the Southwick's.

Want to have you over for elk steaks after Brian delivers my Omega. We'll sip some rhubarb afterward.

Ive picked up their IPA a couple times from a little place around the corner, I haven't seen that one yet. Whenever I'm in the mood for something new or hard to find I head to either Molly's or Superior liquor. There's also a little place directly across the tracks from dfbrews shop on Smith rd that has a pretty respectable selection on hand too. When it comes to NE, one of the only super memorable beers I've had was an IPA from Nebraska brewing that I found at that little store.

I did something similar, but instead of quitting completely I chose to limit myself to one night a week (my Friday). At first I could still do a six pack quite easily, as time went on, I'm to the point now where 2 light beers are about all I'll drink, and forget any hard stuff. Any more than 1-2 beers and I feel like poop. I feel so much better these days.

That's how I am too. It's not that drinking makes me feel bad, (except red wine...oh, the tannins!) it's like I forget to do it unless we have people over. I consciously cut out coffee and soda so now when I'm reaching for a beverage it's either fruit juice, milk, or water.

But I still love my rums and whiskeys, neat or maybe 1 cube. This is what I've been sipping on lately, when I remember to do it:

A friend of mine got a Groupon deal to Cockpit Craft Distillery (https://www.cockpitdistillery.com/)here in Colorado Springs (interested parties can get the same deal here (https://www.groupon.com/deals/cockpit-craft-distillery)).

We got a tour, tasting and a drink from their bar (the bartender is a nice lady that used to do private bartending at the Broadmoor and makes some interesting drinks, including the Old Fashioned I had where she started out burning a piece of maple under the glass) and a free glass.

They do a bourbon-esque whisky called P-51 that is pretty darn good (I ended up buying a bottle), and tonite I finally cracked it open and had a glass on the rocks, then tried it with Vanilla Coke (Bourbon, usually Maker's & Vanilla Coke is kind of my "house drink" ... the vanilla brings out interesting flavors in the whiskey) and it was extremely good that way (good just on the rocks too). They also do several Rums which were pretty good and a white "moonshine" grain alcohol called P-38 that I really liked (if you're in to that sort of thing).

Anyway, they're well worth checking out (and the bar is made from the tail of a C45 (Beechcraft M18) that flew supplies to Marines in the Pacific during WWII).

Actually, I suffered a broken neck in 1981 and since then alcohol gives me terrible headaches at the back of my head where the injury was at C1. And after my gastric bypass surgery my system doesn't process alcohol normally, the buzz hits fast and hard, and so does the headache.

So essentially - I drink, I suffer. No drink, no suffer. So if I do, it's in very small amounts. Makes me a little sad.....

Today I got together with friends to bottle our 2016 Riesling. They grow and pick the grapes, then bring them to me to crush and de-stem the clusters. I have all the winery equipment and make the wine. When it's finished, aged, and all the sediments are racked off, then we get together to filter and bottle.

The 2016 crop was smaller but of good quality. I used different wine yeasts this time and we're happy with the results. It's tart and fruity as a Riesling should be. My share is 74 bottles which should keep us sippin' for a while.71082

Like rondog, I rarely consume alcohol anymore. It seems I've lost a taste for it.

That said, I'm happy to maintain my collection of liquor and while I haven't bought any for a few years I've been able to increase/enhance that collection with some fine scotches given to my wife and I as gifts. This week we received a bottle of of 10 year old Laphroaig. Should my tastes or interest in consuming again change, I'll have some good stuff to sip on for a while.

The liquor stores in Idaho are operated by the state (funny thing...they call them "dispensaries"). Occasionally they hold a lottery for rare or hard-to-get items...like Pappy Van Winkle bourbons and such. Still waiting to get picked for one of those. A few weeks ago I threw my hat into the ring for a drawing of some unusual bourbons...not rare, but rare here. I got a call today that I was selected for this one. Haven't tried it yet...but I will later tonight. Never had a 20 year old bottle of anything!

Yeah. Only had one bottle. It's from the Buffalo Trace distillery, too (I'm sure you know that), just like the EH Taylor. So far, I like everything I've tried from that distillery. On the other hand, I probably don't have a very sophisticated palette. It either tastes good to me, or it doesn't. I read some of these descriptions from guys about "hints of caramel, white pepper and old, dusty leather" and I feel like a dumbass. Then again, I've never tasted old, dusty leather.

To make an infused jalapeno tequila take a pepper, slice it lengthwise to open up the goodness, tie with string and suspend it in the bottle. The heat will vary with different peppers, sometimes 6 hours in the bottle will lend plenty of bite, but with some jalapenos you can leave it in until the bottle is empty.

Tonight we're serving Jalapeno Peach Margaritas.

I'll bet it's tasty, given how enjoyable this bottle is.

I'm kind of a cheapskate at heart. I enjoy a nice bourbon and Angel's Envy would be right near the top of ones I have tried so far. I also like Breckenridge bourbon a lot. Bulleit and Larceny are my more often-purchased "nice" ones I'll spend a bit more on and enjoy them but I still feel iffy about spending even that much on a regular drink--although most would consider those pretty mid range, I'd guess. For my more regular drinking, I tend to cheap out on Ancient Age or Benchmark 8.

Hah, that's definitely cheaping out. Of the bottles I keep around they probably average $35-$40. Angel's Envy is probably the most expensive bottle I've bought but I've been tempted to open up the wallet for a bottle of Wild Turkey Decades. $150 Wild Turkey, just for the hell of it.

LOL . . . yeah, I'm not proud of it. I usually keep a bottle of Breckenridge, Bulleit or Larceny on hand for when I want to have something finer to drink. If I'm just whipping up an old fashioned or throwing down a glass or two with a splash of water to relax then I reach for the cheap stuff more often than not.

My wife shakes her head and says "life's too short . . . just drink the good stuff" but I just can't bring myself to not keep the cost down.

Just picked up this month's lottery bottle. Old Forester "Idaho Bourbon Lovers".

According to the clerk a group of bourbon enthusiasts across the state got tired of never winning a bottle in the Pappy Van Winkle lottery that's held every year. So, they got together and with the help of the state liquor office got to pick a barrel of this OF bourbon. That's how they got the special label. Whether or not that's the real story? Anybody's guess.

This stuff is my favorite. I only get it when I'm in Nebraska. Supposedly there are like three liquor stores in CO that carry it, but I've never seen it.

It's great and even regular priced at $7.99 or $8.99 per six pack and you can get it at the local grocery store in Nebraska. Want me to try and bring you back some?

I tried to get my local Total Beverage to order some. I told the guy if they got a few six packs and put them out for people to buy that it'd be a big hit. Never happened.

So after staying with the head cider maker at a local brewery down in Houston, I've been buying a lot of cider to check out what is out there. I really like the more dry ciders. So much that could probably switch to mostly cider. Anyway, this is the best I've had so far. Delicious!

When the world wide run on Buffalo Trace happened last December I tried the Weller. Pretty good but I never did a head to head taste test with Buffalo Trace. Will have to try it again.

For a good six months Buffalo Trace was unobtainium, at least in in Boulder County stores, but I could always find it at Fischer's in Grand Junction. It's a staple in our stable. This reminds me that I probably should stock up before the Christmas rush.

The problem with trying all the ciders, is that they never ring up at Total Beverage and they have to look them up manually. Makes me feel like I'm the only one buying them.

On a side note, I always find them in the bomber cave and didn't even realize you could get them in cans and packs until very recently.

I almost hate to ask, I'm not much of a drinker and certainly not after anything "high-end" because of the cost and really strong alcohol taste doesn't appeal to me - but does anybody here know anything about Tincup? Kinda interested in something to sip small amounts of and it was recommended to me as being pretty mellow, and not a "whiskey connosuier's" brand.

Guess I'm looking for a sissy whiskey to sip on, something that won't tear up my gut or head.

Tin Cup is a pretty good whiskey, but if you wouldn't sip Jack, then you won't like Tin Cup either. It's still 80 proof of whatever full blown whisky.

Honestly, the best I've ever had was a 12 year McCallan and that is probably pretty expensive.

I might try like a Canadian whiskey for what you're after.

Or you might try something like Leopold Bros. Rocky Mountain Peach Whiskey. It’s only 60 proof, made with Colorado peaches. A little syrupy, but covers the bite if you don’t like the hard stuff, and is nice to sip at a campfire.

That's a good point. Their apple is so sweet it's hard to drink, but if you cut it with enough water, it just tastes like apple juice. Apple juice that will get you messed up if you drink too many glasses.

Bird Dog is less sweet / syrupy, if that’s not your thing (the peach, haven’t tried the apple)

Speaking of apple that will mess you up, a recent bartender put some apple juice in a margarita. Didn’t know it, and had to ask what was different. Pretty tasty.

Better than when I ordered a whiskey and coke in Florida and got a Fireball and coke. It tasted like what 7th grade girl lip gloss smells like.

Tasteless joke, typed and redacted.

Didn't see it, but I'll pretend I laughed a lot.

Tin Cup is from the same guy who did Stranahan’s. Not a fan of either.

For some good CO whiskeys try Fireside, Peach Street or Breckenridge. Too strong? Add a little water.

I don't drink much hard liquor but I always thought Crown Royal went down pretty smooth.

That's what I've been slurpin' on, my annual CR for eggnog. Been just putting some in a small glass and sipping it. It's fine, just looking for options.

2017 Whiskey of the year... Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. Good lord this is good juice but I think I still prefer Stagg Jr for high, high proof bourbons.

Closest location on the internet is Colorado Springs for $60

Store by me in Greeley had it for $70. It was an impulse purchase that I don't regret at all.

Bought me a bottle of this and am enjoying it! I can't handle the powerful stuff (long story - broken neck and stomach surgery), but this is mellow enough I can drink a respectable amount and get a lil' buzz that doesn't hurt.
