I'm pretty much obsessed with Snow Capped ciders, and the best part, they grow all their own fruit.

When I went to Houston earlier this year I stayed with friends. One of them, on a bet, started making cider. Now he is the head cider master at a brewery down there. He turned me on to ciders and now I always cruise through the bomber cave looking for something new every time I go to the big liquor store. Have you had any of the habenero ones yet? I like those better than the chili beers.

hurley842002
12-27-2018, 21:43
I've seen the Snow Capped "Jalapearno" but have been hesitant to try it, as I don't usually care for the chilli themed beverages. My brother got me a cider brewing kit last year for Christmas, and I have yet to use it, I really need to put something together, preferably a cherry cider.

Irving
12-27-2018, 22:15
It pretty much tastes like you're drinking a jalapeno. Not much different than the chili beers, expect it has that delicious cider under current instead of beer.

Anything spicy pear is worth trying once.I would certainly try it once, but that means finding a single in the build your own six pack section, because I'm not really interested in drinking a 4 pack of jalapeno.

Recently burned through a bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon, pretty good! Just got another one.

Also read about putting a few drops of vanilla extract in your sippin' whiskey to mellow it out a bit and knock down the fire. It seems to work well, can't taste it, but it does improve the drinkability for me.

Other people have raved about running your bottle of sprits through a Brita or Pūr water filter pitcher, says the charcoal filtering really smooths it out. Haven't tried that yet.

We tried that in college with cheap vodka but we only did it once so it must not have been that big a deal. Not that we were real discerning with our taste back then.

Oh yeah. Easy to drink coffee stout. Certainly coffee forward without being overpowering. Drink at room temperature or the make the alcohol too prominent.

Epic makes some awesome stouts in the Baptist series. This is not an imperial stout so it is easier drinking. The Big Bad Baptist or Baptist Series are whole different animals. They age very well.

I've seen this recently somewhere, I thought it was on here. Anyway a buddy was talking about it last night saying the big liquor store was having trouble keeping it on shelves. When I went in there today they had a rep and a whole tower of bottles so I bought a few (one for my buddy who said he couldn't find it). It's damn good.

I have a bottle as well. I bought it hoping to find something I like even more than the seemingly ubiquitous 12yr Balvenie Double Wood, but Dalmore 12 isn't quite there for me... It's good for sure, but just good.

If you really want to find a whiskey to knock your socks off, go down to TX and get a bottle of the Balcones TX Single Malt.... it's outstanding... might as well get a bottle of their Baby Blue while you're there too.

Not sure of coffee fits in here, but...

A friend of mine recently returned from a vacation in Vietnam. He brought back a bag a coffee beans for me. Made a few cups this morning. Wow. It has been since the mid 90s since I was in Vietnam and Cambodia. The smell and flavor brought back a bunch of good memories.

So good. Absolutely incredible. And I thought Ethiopian coffee was good. One of the very few times I would consider using bottled water instead of tap water.

I've heard this stuff is difficult to get. While I was conducting some business at the liquor store I over heard that they had way more cases than usual. So right now at Total Beverage, instead of a one case limit, I think it's a four case limit. Haven't tried it yet.

I like IPAs with "hazy" or "juicy" in the name as they are like a wheat or very fruity respectively. The Rupture (fresh grind) and Hammer Chain (fresh grind double IPA) have not so subtle notes of deeper flavors that are very pleasing to the pallet. Regular IPA that is just "hoppy" is pretty boring.

Oh that looks interesting, Irving. Is the bird dog praline like anything you’ve had before or can you describe it at all?

Here is my honest review: Bird Dog is a cheap whisky. The praline flavor is strong, but not too strong (*like Honey Jager or Leopold Brothers New York Apple). However, the sweetness is a little overdone. It's okay for sippin, but unless you really loved it, it'd be tough to have a bunch of glasses in one night. It has kind of a caramel/pecan pie smell, and tastes pretty similar. It'd probably be amazing as a way to spice up a coffee in the winter.

*Honey Jager tastes EXACTLY like you just drank a shot of honey, which is impressive, but after a spoon full of honey by itself I'm usually done, let alone an entire ounce at one time.
I had Leopold New York Apple once and it was a bit too strong/sweet, BUT if you cut it by about 50% with water, it tastes just like apple juice. Apple juice that will sneak up and kick your ass if you get carried away.
My favorite flavored whiskey so far is Crown Royal Peach, which I seem to be able to drink lots of at a time. My buddy showed me that peach whiskey mixed with lemon aid is pretty great.

Finally found a bottle here in Colorado. Had my first after driving through TX several years ago and hadn’t been able to locate any means of getting a bottle shipped to me since. Hopefully the distribution rights are now squared away and I can keep finding it here going forward.

I contend it’s one of the greatest American distilled single malts of all time. Certainly in the recent era. If you enjoy scotch or single malt whiskey, do yourself a favor and try some Balcones TX single malt.

Has it really opened your eyes to a new brand?

I see what you did. If sold locally, yeah, it not enough that I’ve mail-ordered any. But I might have to try some of that Blueberry Velvet, after Hurley’s review.

I haven't seen it since I posted on here about it, I've seen the Apricot which is also worth trying, but it's not on the same level as the Blueberry. 4 Noses is up North, I may have to drive up there and inquire because I've been craving some.

Tried to buy the blueberry velvet, but applejacks says it was just a seasonal, no longer gettable. So, I tried their raspberry blond. Not nearly the flavor I’d hoped for. Gonna stick to actual recommendations now, not just tangents of something that was good.

But then I splurged last night. Like I never do, And I have to say, the $79, 18oz HIGH MTN. PLAINS RANCH WAGYU RIBEYE, COLORADO, GRAIN-FINISHED streak was the absolute best beast of my 50 years. And a few “Ol Curmudgeons” to wash it down with, and the joint was not pretentious at all. Three old warriors, and one’s bride who we all know was true scrapper. Place was called Urban Farmer.

In fact, This place was so good.. Mazin! If you stop smoking for 6 months, (assuming you still smoke) no cheating (chew, cigar, any variation of tobacco in mouth, (old, handshake honor code), I will buy you a three course meal there, side dishes and any desert they have, and at lr
Least three drinks. Might just have to eat it with me, though.
And since Bert won’t disclose his mad negotiating skills to sell me a stereo, I guess I just have to make him the same deal.
No cheating.

The Raspberry blonde is just mediocre IMO, the Apricot Velvet is on another level, with the Blueberry Velvet being on an even higher level. I can still find the Apricot, and recommend that one as well, the Blueberry is worth holding out for, I'm sure it will be back.

Picked this up for my wife tonight. She says it looks like "scrotum vodka." I don't drink vodka on it's own, but I think it tastes pretty great (for vodka).

I had a meeting with the owner of the Lolo Creek Steakhouse/Lolo Creek Distillery yesterday. Came away with a very generous gift of a bottle of each of the spirits they produce. Haven't tried any yet...saving it for the "new place" celebration. If you ever find yourself near Lolo you owe it to yourself to stop in and have a steak. Wow!

I really wish I liked IPAs. Seems there are more of them than just about anything.

I?m more of a Scottish/Scotch Ale guy. Or a nice Amber or Belgian Ale. Sometimes I?ll even do a porter or stout.

I just haven?t found an IPA that I like. I?m not much into bitter beers.

Although I do enjoy an occasional sour.

I used to be exactly the same way. Every mix pack comes with IPAs though, so I've had all of them over the years. I really like New England style IPAs and anything with "juicy" or some other reference to fruit in the name. The other day I willingly night a mix pack of just IPAs. Took a decade, but I guess I'm a full convert now.

Last year I bought a mix pack with no IPAs at all and was all excited, then I didn't really like it.

IPA's run in two distinct schools with a several variations within each .

East Coast IPA's tend to focus on the floral, citrus and fruit characteristics of the hops used.

West Coast styles tend to lean toward a more dank resinous hop profile.

More malt profile in the beer tends to make the beer feel heavier on the palate.

Lactose or milk sugar as an adjunct softens the tartness in many sour profile IPA's

Find a reputable bottle shop when the panic subsides and ask the beer staff for some suggestions. Be honest and tell them what ya like for flavors. Same a couple of mixed sixes. and try some new things. Beer advocate is a good place to read reviews as well.

Note what you like and ask beer geeks what they think might be a good comparison. There a TON of smaller breweries that also create some AWESOME beers.

Don't let a bad experience turn you off to an entire style of beer. I have had several "Holy Grail" beers that while an archetype of the style , just were not my thing....

Pliney the Elder from Russian River Brewing...great west Cost Style IPA.... Bells Two Hearted Ale ...Kills it and can be found everywhere and a fraction of the price!

TON of great similar styles.

Apricot Blonde from Dry Dock
St. Bretta from Crooked Stave
Sippin Pretty from Odells
Los Locos from Epic is a Gose' you might like.

Take advantage of a mixed six.

When breweries and tap room open up...try flights and ask the bartender to taste a bunch of different things....tip well and you will be rewarded.

Saisons are are a good choice in the flavor profiles to are talking about....Check out Funkwerks in Ft. Collins....amazing

Since we're all trapped at home, I decided to try something I've wanted to do for awhile.

I fat washed some whisky.

Basically, I took a bottle of cheap whisky (Seagrams 7) threw it and a few tablespoons full of bacon fat into the crockpot on low for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally. Then let it come up to room temperature, strained it through a coffee filter and tossed it in the freezer.

The result is a whisky with a fairly prominent bacon undertone. It makes a tasty, but fairly gimmicky Old Fashioned.

Evidently, you can use this process with various kinds of fats and liquors; e.g. you could use this as the basis for a hot buttered rum.

I doubt I'd ever use this process on top shelf or even mid-shelf hooch, but I have to say I was overall quite pleased with the result.

So now you can clog your heart and your liver at the same time?

Justin
04-28-2020, 13:58
Basically.

In all actuality, I'm not sure how much of the fat stays dissolved in the liquor. Once you let it sit, the fat congeals on the surface, kind of like what you get when you make chicken stock. After skimming it off and running it through a filter, I would imagine that there's a chance that some of the fat sticks around, but not much.

The nice thing is that it gives you that smokey bacon-y flavor without making it feel like the inside of your mouth is coated in a layer of grease.

While I enjoy branching out and trying different stuff, if nothing else sounds appealing (or more likely they are out of whatever it was that I wanted to try) I really enjoy 90 Schilling.

I suppose if I was stuck with drinking only one beer during a pandemic it would be 90 Shilling.

There are some local places that have some stuff I like a lot also. I guess I could just stock up on growlers.

This thread makes me miss the Cheeky Monk. Not sure why they closed them all down but they had some good beers. I had to be careful drinking there because a lot of their stuff had a pretty high alcohol content so sometimes I couldn?t have as many as I thought and still be good to drive. I always drank different stuff but my wife enjoyed the Kasteel Rouge.

Mykidsdad

Their selections were awesome. Flights at a good taproom are a great way to branch out and try new things without a buying a six pack or bomber. Taprooms are one of the things I miss most during this shutdown.

Colorado has some great small breweries and taprooms and I sincerely hope that they survive. Even the larger breweries have some terrific offerings. Great Divide Barrel room and Epic’s taprooms in Denver Are awesome and offer some rare stuff on occasion. New Belgium in FOCO treats their traditional Belgian styles with the respect that they deserve. Saisson’s and fruitied ales at Funkwerks in FOCO are amazing and their beer tenders get creative with their own blends.

Taprooms abound. However , I have often found that breweries have more respect for the product and are more knowledgeable. I have encountered chipped and dirty glassware and some spoiled beer at taprooms. Higher end beer is often very perishable. Sanitation of taps and lines is critical for lighter styles and fruited styles where more sugars are present. Proper temps for the beer style is also critical.

Hope we can all get back to the experience of sharing good beer and good times soon!
