It an amazing thing really. It takes place in hammertown, USA. A place that for 50 weeks a year is a desolate desert dry lake bed, but for 2 weeks it transforms into 50,000 people creating a city in the middle of no where.

You can go to google maps and type in king of the hammers and the location will come up, basically south of Barstow CA and west of Hesperia.

Just last week jalopnik called it one of the top 10 hardest races in the world.

Got my rig back today finally. 10mm does the Metal Cloak kit come with extended brake lines? I was looking at mine today on the lift and at full droop my brake lines are maxed out. If I flex into without my sway bar connected I will tear them. If you don't have them you should look into that pronto.

Just unhook them, front has a screw that will release the bracket, rear is a screw also. they will give you about 6-8", sounds a little clinky on the trail but at least they won't break! Yes, my MC lift came with about 12" (might be close to 18", just know they are LONG)brake line extensions that I have not installed yet. My brake lines are dangling and making noise on the trail right now. I'll put them on in a few weeks.......

Edit: might want to extend the vent lines on the axles as well, mine pop off from extending so far. I fixed by adding about 12" of line...

Oh. Awesome. That's only about an hour from my place. I thought it was closed?

In other news, I picked up a used 700r4 out of 1990 fullsize, k-case. No idea of internals condition, but it looks really good from the outside. I'm planning on building it right the first time. I'll be going to 4.88s in the rear 8.8/front D30. That and a cooler should keep temps down. Anybody dealt with a reputable tranny builder in NoCo who has decent experience with the 700r4? Planning upgraded sunshell, planetaries, clutches, pump, pan, and cooler. Also, I'm hoping to keep the 231 but think I need to upgrade the input shaft since the 700 has a 27 spline output. Anyone been down this road?

I saw them pulling the gears out, I am not sure. I moved on with the pack and at the end kept moving. There was a pretty good size group and it split into those that were broke and working on em to those that weren't and kept going. I was in the 2nd group...

I would say 33" would do it. Consider this: 2 Slightly modified XJ were going up, they pulled over let me go by. Came up about another 200 yards and turned around. I am not sure about lockers, if they are needed or not, I use mine because I have em. I am always out, I was out and about today! guess what i am saying is; "Come on out!"

There are a lot of challenging parts on that trail, you can by-pass some, you might not make it all the way around, but it will give you a good idea of your trucks capability. If you go stay to the left and by-pass the 1st trail to the right, that's were the stock one broke down.

I was eyeing some Dana 60s yesterday. Excuse to go out and thrash the 8.8/D30? I've never opened the axles but have receipts from the p.o. saying they're built/locked. Haven't yet tested them. Thanks man. I'll hit him up. I may be able to make Thursday as well! As far as a build, it's a work in progress... aren't they all. Right now it's trail ready with a weak cooling system and tranny that won't last long. I have 60% of the components I need to upgrade the cooling. Also need to reinstall the heater and find a winch. It was a good time! These will be on 1st thing in the A.M.!! Some advice; if you lift it, extend your brake lines, if you don't; braking distance on the road going 45 is at least 100 yards!!! Expect some puckker factor..........

I bet they came out sweet! I, on the other hand, just went through the worst car experience of my entire life. Went to pull the rear sway bar today and change the oil. Sway bar came out in about 10 minutes while the oil drained, no big deal. Put the drain cap back on and went to pull the oil filter and it didn't even budge. So, gave it a wrench with a filter wrench and nada. Tried the drastic screw driver through the filter and the filter tore in half. I have never in all of my life seen a filter that tight. The one time I don't change the oil myself because we were in the process of moving and look what I get. I swear they must have used some form of locking solvent on it! It took me SIX HOURS to get it off. I shit you negative on the six hours. I had to use every tool in my arsenal. Believe it or not the Reciprocating Saw ended up pushing me through to the end. By the time I got it off the entire filter had been removed and all that was left was the threaded on portion. I am aching all over and my fingers are black and blue. I am beyond pissed and exhausted. [Mad]

Pics to come tomorrow of the oil filter that I will never be getting rid of. I also drove the rig to Chick Fil A after to calm my nerves with a Sweet Tea and I noticed no difference in handling without the rear on, even on the highway. Go figure. Goodnight fellow Jeepers. Additionally for those who care, Alamo made it through his ball chopping and he is on the road to recovery. He is somewhat fussy and whimpers a lot but he should make a full recovery.

What kind of trails are you wanting to hit? If your looking at wanting to do the majority of the ones in Colorado you will need; lift, tires, winch, lockers, etc. Right now you can do the majority of the dirt roads, but getting off road will be challenging stock.

I hear that a lot but then I see people posting trail reports on the various 4x4 forums hitting the mid level difficulty trails with their Isuzu Rodeos and Nissan Exterras. I'm sure a modified Jeep will do a bit better and would be necessary on the serious rock crawling trails, but there's plenty of trails out there that don't require a purpose built buggy.

Yeah, figured I would have to lift it some to get larger tires under it to go over some of the stuff in the pics. I'm not opposed to doing that part. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on getting some of that done somewhere besides my garage. I have the tools for the most part, air and so on but don't have a lot of time. Winch I may have, have to check the rating on it, still in a box. Not sure if stock bumper would handle a winch though. Probably going to say no aren't ya :)

When I first got it I went searching for video's showing what a stock X could do and some of it was pretty amazing. Especially the one where it goes under water to about 6" from its top and keeps going. Some of the vids showed the guy didn't know how to get it in 4x4 though too so didn't really count those :)

Might want to watch my video of the Toyota winching his way up a very EASY trail..... here is a very easy trail and the rigs needed lockers. Shoot even the ones were T-Giv and Gofer hit were fairly easy, and there rigs were still built a bit.

Yeah a Toyota had to winch up maybe but I have a Jeep! :-P
Jeep probably has more weight in the back (oh wait, I can touch the back from the front if I lay down).
I had gone tire shopping and found some kevlar ones that a couple of the tire guys had on their Jeeps and swore by them. Said they would do everything but ice and nothing really helped on just plain ice but studs or chains.

Kevlar MTR's? There not bad on the ice either, IT"S ICE..... We did a frozen stream crossing and they did surprisingly well! Yes, your jeep is capable but you will find yourself venturing into harder and harder stuff, wanting to go on the "FUN" trails and you will eventually need the stuff i listed. Not counting the beer runs how long do you figure it would take to put a moderate lift on a 2007 X using air tools and a floor jack? I thought I was reading a moderate one is 3 1/2? Mines a TJ, not a JK. I originally got it so I didn't have to take my new mustang and park it at the grocery store for all those old ladys to ding up. But now that I have it I see a lot more potential than parking lots.

I did mine solo- 3days, no directions and about 3 hours a day... I had no clue what i was doing! You can do a simple easy spacer lift or if you want something longer term do the other. I would say if you have a couple guys about 3-4 hours.... No beer until done, or maybe just one or two.....

You just told a guy that he could only drive on dirt roads. No one can argue that your list doesn't grant access to more difficult trails, but lockers, lift, and winch are hardly required for MOST trails in Colorado. My buddy wheeled his stock Rubicon with me all summer once and he never even got any trail damage. He very rarely had to use his lockers. It is all about picking your lines.

Are you just inviting me out so you can watch me break and stock truck and talk shit the whole time?

P.S. I think a rear locker should be the #1 mod to do on any off road vehicle. Even before a lift and bigger tires.

I won't talk shit, I'll just say; told you so once or twice and we will have fun! I don't want to give the wrong impression, there are many trails a stock jeep can go. I think I said this and I said; it will be "challenging", say it won't. I have had stock everything and had a blast, breaking shit, digging it out, etc. You know as well as I do, all those items make it "easy" and more enjoyable...... I don't think I painted the picture that they are a must or a requirement. You will just be limited to were you can and can't go, how easy it is and how much work you want to put into going there.

So I see you commenting all the time but have yet to wheel with ya.... Let's all get together and go wheel it up! It'll be fun... I know T-Giv and USAGofermike is down...

O and I agree on the rear locker over other stuff 1st. And a stock Rubi is way more capable than the majority of the stuff out there. I almost wish i wouldn't have lifted mine and just left it stock!

I want to go with you guys, but you usually go during the week and on short notice. I've been watching this thread so I can take a day off and go. At the same time, I'm not going to show up to a place I know I can't do, and ruin the day for everyone. I don't even have winch points on my low truck.

The most difficult (in my opinion, and in my knowledge) trails the stock Rubicon did was Spring Creek and Left Hand Canyon. I wouldn't take my stock truck up Spring Creek without getting sliders at least.

^ This. Cool build. Douche-hole driver. Reminds me of that Icelandic buggy rail dragster stuff.

No doubt, the newer (read last 10 years) Jeeps/Rubis are very well built and far more capable than previous models out of the box, and a rear locker is easily the best bang for the buck when it cames to increasing your trail options. After that, it's taller tires which necessitate the lift. Winch is not needed, but nice. Decent winch points are more important. Above all else, a decent driver with a can do attitude who chooses decent lines and has a couple of friends to wheel with is your #1 asset.

Edit - Spring Creek looks cool. I'm airing down a bit next time.

I'm still shopping around for my lines. Alamo has been costing mucho $$$ lately as has the wifey. I need to pull some OT shifts to get things back in the green before I get back to the Jeep stuff. My birthday is coming up in a few weeks though and looks like I'm getting the Aussie lunchbox front locker. Anyone have any install experience with those? T-giv, are you at all worried about having an Aussie locker on your front in off-camber, slippery situations? Refer to the buggy video again for examples.

T-Giv
02-09-2013, 13:20
I'm not. I have read a bunch of reviews on it and talked to a few guys that run it. They said that theirs has held up and worked well even in heavy articulation and very slippery stuff. Considering it's only $300 I'm definitely going to at least give it a shot.

Irving
02-09-2013, 13:32
I'm not asking if you are worried about it not working, I'm asking if you are concerned about not being able to turn it off. Have you ever been locked and spinning on an off camber road or trail? Without one wheel to anchor you, the locked axle will simply slide down the hill. I almost put my truck into one of the ponds behind Water World once, and that was just with an LSD in the rear and a muddy dirt road that was only slightly off camber. If it weren't for the front axle anchoring me, I would have ended up in the pond. Is your rear locker selectable?

EDIT: Let me clarify. I would actually be less worried about having a locked front on a capable trail rig, that is on a trail; and more so on driving in slick conditions on the roads. A lunchbox or LSD on the rear only is pretty manageable on the streets in the snow, but I'd be VERY hesitant to drive with the front locked in the snow, if the rear was also locked. I just recently did a TON of reading on this because Aussie makes a front locker for IFS set-ups as well. There is a guy over in Grand Junction with an Aussie on both axles, he says he does not drive his truck in slick conditions on the roads.

On the other hand, here is a video of an XJ with an Aussie on the front and LSD in the rear to encourage you. ;)

Ah I see what you are saying now. Yes I have also been concerned about being locked all the time in the snow on street. The Aussie however unlocks when the wheels are turned either direction and it is unlocked all of the time when the rig is in 2 wheel drive. So from those whom I have talked to said that in the snow it takes a little getting used to but that once you know how it reacts it's a non issue. I guess I won't know until I try it?

Well, I ran into two thoughts that I agreed with.

1) If you have manual hubs and you NEED an anchor, you could just get out and unlock one hub and have 3-wheel drive.
2) If you are able to drive more than 20-30 mph in slick conditions, then you likely won't need to be in 4-drive anyway.

I've driven a front wheel drive car with a front LSD and it was WAY better in the snow than non-LSD. I can only imagine if I had had actual snow tires. When on an off-camber street, if I goosed it enough to break the front tires loose, it would always predictably slide toward the edge of the road. That was something I was always in control of though, and it never created an issue. Not to mention I had both rear wheels to anchor me.

My Amigo has an LSD in the rear, and when driving on flat, snowy surfaces, it might as well be just be fully locked. It is easy to goose the throttle and have the back end come around on me. I had to learn to drive it a little bit because of that. Making turns onto a street under any decent amount of acceleration is asking for trouble, but again, that is something very controllable and you quickly learn not to drive like a moron.

I think the new Ford F-150 Raptor comes with a selectable rear locker and a front LSD. That's pretty cool, but I bet it will get people into trouble driving around in snow storms in 4-wheel drive.

The Aussie however unlocks when the wheels are turned either direction and it is unlocked all of the time when the rig is in 2 wheel drive. As for this, from what I read, it sounds like it unlocks when you take your foot off the gas. So as long as you are not powering through turns, it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Found a lot of limits to my ride today. Mostly having to do with not having a lift and a locker. :p
I got high centered going down a hill. I called my buddy who lives near by and he came over and hopped on the bumper a few times and shook me loose. That was right about the time the police showed up. The officer was pretty cool about it and didn't give me a hard time.

Winch would have prob got you out and then you wouldn't have to bug your buddy! lol I once got stuck the same way, passenger on the bumper jumping up and down a few times, did the trick! Were were you at that the police showed up?

104th and Washington in Thornton. Look it up on Google maps and look behind the King Soopers. A winch wouldn't have helped me unless I had a stake to drive into the ground. The police politely informed me that there is no where legal to 4-wheel in Thornton, lol.

On the other hand, here is a video of an XJ with an Aussie on the front and LSD in the rear to encourage you. ;)

I run a Lock Right in the rear and open front. That covers most of the hard trails in CO and UT. The extreme trails are a different story. Double Whammy, on Golden Spike, is a good example of when this set-up is less than optimal.

If you are looking for an on/off front locking device, I'd lean toward something like an ARB air locker in the front. For on road use, I wouldn't bother with a front locker. Do you really drive more than 20-30mph in 4wd?

Given a choice, I'd rather have two front tires looking for traction then one unlocked hub (never gone that route). Never been anywhere that I couldn't get through either.

Realistically, how off camber do you plan to be? I've run a lot of trails in CO/UT and can't remember anything too steep. There was one section on Hell's Revenge that tilted the driver over an 80'+ drop off that had me, the driver, leaning right. Traction was not a problem, but I could have pooped diamonds.

Guess the question is "what do you want to run?".

Depends entirely on your budget. If you can afford to get an older rig that's stock and build it up as you like then go that route. If you would rather just lump everything together with the loan from a dealership that is an option as well. I opted for the cheapest rig out of the box that was brand new. I paid my rig off in a matter of a few months after buying it and then have been building up as I go. That way I can build it out how I want to and when it comes time for me to do axle swaps I will be going Dana 60's minimum so it didn't make sense for me to pay the added cost of a Rubicon when I was going to build above those specs down the road anyway.

02-23-2013, 17:40
Thanks T-Giv!! It will be driven mainly by my wife, so I don't think we will ever do any serious off roading where we would want to change out the axle or anything like that. If we ever get into it more than I will just build one up. We have decided to just go with the one all built up as long as we can get it for the right price and 0% financing. Thanks for the input any more is welcomed.

I think no matter which ever way you go, you should do as much yourself as possible! Financing the rig already done will cost you a lot....... I bought my Rubicon brand new stock; they were asking close to $50k done and set up ready to roll. I am way under that, did the lift, tires, rims my self. I found the rims on line at Amazon, and tires at another online store, I get free shipping and no tax, so the local shop (discount Tires) said they would match it.

I don't think I will ever do Dana 60's so the 44's are ok with me. The front needs to be beefed up with a truss, I was told the backs on the 44 is fine; so figure getting a truss welded on it. (if you plan to wheel) You will with out a doubt need it on the Dana 30, ask T-giv....

I had bought a 2010 Wrangler X prior to my 2013 Rubicon, by the time you figure in; axles, lockers, more power (LS, hemi swap or supper charger) you come out ahead buying a newer one. You will definitely need more power with 35" tires or bigger, if you want to go faster than 65 on the highway with out it being a dog. The 2013 as you prob know has more power and torque. I can say my 13' runs better lifted and 35" tires than my 10' did stock! So if you plan to buy a used one make sure and figure the added cost of everything you are going to need to make sure it isn't a dog; gear swap, more power, axles, lockers, etc.

it all comes down to how much $$$, time you want to spend and what you want to use it for. I like my Rubi, drive it everyday now and wouldn't think of going any other way but that's IMO....... Can't wait to see what you decide, you'll enjoy it either way!

Thanks 10mm, I think in the end your right which ever way we go the wife should be happy and even stock we should still be able to take it to the mt for snowboarding and camping. Good to know that older models with 35 would need a Hp boost something to keep in mind. I think we are going to go with the new on just need to see how it drives and crunch the numbers in our favor....

Do your homework first Lex and I recommend going on a trail ride with someone. If you're buying a jeep just for the wifey to drive on the street, you're better off getting something that suits your needs. You'll spend less money that way and have more fun. Just my .02. I've had several jeeps and they're all money pits in the end. Eventually you either get sick of them on the road or sink a bunch of money in em, wheel em til you break something, spend more money to build it back up, then break something else. It's a toy... really. The new jeeps, aka, the pretty SUVs like 10mm-man has are really nice and for enough coin you can have the best of both worlds. Mine is not comfortable, it's not pretty, but it wheels, and it's my 3rd vehicle so if I break it, I'm not hurting to get it back on the road/trail. I hope that helps.

No I still run the front one on the street. It has quick disconnects for wheeling but I always had to leave it connected because the brake lines would tear if the front had too much flex. That's why I always had a wheel off of the ground (or two!).

Still go slow when you get out there and flex and test it out even with those new brake lines. I put the 22" JKS lines on my XJ and thoguht I was GTG. I still almost ripped them out the first time I flexed it. I ended up relocating the brake line bracket down and getting another 2" out of them, but ultimately had to run a limiting strap to limit down travel.

Not only would the Wrangler take the diesel, but with a 420 lb-ft of torque rating in the Grand Cherokee with the same engine, it seems like a no-brainer that one of the most off-road oriented cars on the market would make use of that low-end power.

Ok, so wait- when you say it went sideways you mean literally? Like the brakes locked up or something? or it went into limp mode while you were 4wheeling? I been out a few times and been four wheeling then get on highway and it has no get up and go. Turn it off and then fire it up and I am cruising like nothing happened. Figured I threw off some sensors or something and it might have thought it was in an accident or something.

Me and 10mm are setting up a run for tomorrow if anyone would like to join! Probably looking at something close by and lower in elevation so most of the snow will hopefully have melted off. Open to suggestions!

We need to coordinate a better way to post up runs and get RSVPs lined up. Anyone have any good ideas?

On a side note I was messing around with my brake lines today just to see how they work with a little bit of flex. Looks like they will be enough. Disconnecting the rear sway bar has made a huge impact on rear articulation. Even with the front connected the rear flexed great.

Well then let's meet at that gas station at Morrison and 470 at 10:00 and then we will bounce up from there! Does that work for you Irving? It will also be good to meet you. Any other last minute takers for a weekend run?

I took some photos and some video, but nothing worth posting up as I was driving at the same time in all of them. I was stopped on the side of the road taking a picture of a coyote on the way back, by the way. Either of you guys have plans to put a CB in your rigs?

I have been working on some trails for upcoming trail rides with you dudes. Has anyone in here run carnage canyon? I've never been up there but HOLY BALLS does it look tough. I know 10mm has been bored with Slaughterhouse and Left Hand Canyon and this just may get him engaged!

Irving

Carnage Canyon is where buggies play. From couple hundred yards I've seen, I think you guys would probably do just fine, but you'd for sure be stopping and spotting for each other.

I heard the majority of it is ok, it's the last hundred yards that would get ya! But I also heard there is a by-pass for that part...........

T-giv and 10mm you guys have very capable rigs and could run Carnage (BV) I think no problem just expect some body damage....but hey that's just character [Beer]

Or you guys could play in the Penrose trail system like Indy or Liberty!!

Yeah... after watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfwall7_PJU , I'll not be running carnage any time soon. I am down for another run with you guys though. The last one was a blast. There's some trails up the poudre that might be fun. If I ever get a weekend off, I may have to host a run accompanied by an after party at the house. Lots of room for people to crash cause after wheeling, we might have to put down a few beers and tear up some BBQ. :)

Awesome video. That looked fun. What a trip they must have had. The last part of Carnage Canyon at the top (starting around 8:40 of the video), is unbelievable. We have walked down it from the top and I couldn't imagine taking a vehicle up that. My son and nephew rode their dirt bikes up from the bottom of it a hundred yards or so, and that was cool.
