FINALLY found a decently priced used soft top (CJ5 stuff is hard to find and expensive ... a new top would have cost me between $800 and a grand!).

Top was $250 ... about half of what any other used complete soft top I found would cost.

Overall the top is in excellent shape (a couple scratches on the passenger side door window ... and someone cut and re-welded the passenger side door pins to get a slightly different offset so it doesn't fit quite right).

Was a bitch to install that's for sure, my jeep is a '70 with a windshield that I believed was from a '76-83 CJ5 but it could have been from a CJ8 too as it was installed to make the single cab hard top the Jeep came with work so the soft top doesn't fit exactly perfect, but it works well enough so I'm happy with it (and now we can take the dog with us in the Jeep which was the whole point in getting it in the first place).

At first I wasn't sure I'd like a blue top on a red Jeep but I figure if I get a Patriots bumper sticker on it I can piss off some Bronco fans :)

No winch needed. Do hells revange. I've seen stock rubi's do most stuff out there. There are by- passes for the really hard stuff.

Was anyone from the board out at Slaughterhouse Gulch yesterday? I went out there to try out my new bike, and there were several different groups of 4x4ers out there.

The trail still had some snowy spots, but was mostly clear. There were a few spots that were a little sketchy on a bike, but a rig would have zero issues.

Wanted to find something quick near Frisco today as we only had a couple hours. Deer Creek was still closed, so we hit Peru Creek instead. Was pretty easy/clear all the way to the end. The last 100yds though before the end of the trail at the Argentine Pass hiking trail was a huge snow drift that was still waist deep. I found that out while shoveling... :)

Don't have a copy of photoshop or anything up here to fix the glare on the photos, but the streams were running well. We found a number of good water crossings to splash through too.

So, you think you've seen "rare" Jeeps?

How about Rare with a capital "R"?

How about RARE in bold red letters?

I've known about these two vehicles for a few years, they're owned by a gent named Fred Laperriere who lives in Sedalia. I've talked to him about them on the phone and been invited over, but I've never made it over to see him. Today, I ran into him at Centennial airport. The B-17 Aluminum Overcast was there, and I was surprised to see lots of other WWII vehicles and weapons on display as well. And I got to meet Fred finally!

Without further adieu, may I present two of Fred's treasures.....

This is a 1949 Davis 3-wheeled prototype Jeep. Produced in 1949, only 3 were made and presented to the military for evaluation. They weren't accepted, of course, and no more were made. As far as Fred knows, all three survive, he's even met one of the other owners. But this one is the only one that's totally original, just as it was when the Army gave it back. They're only 2-wheel drive, so they're not really "Jeeps" per se, Davis intended them to be used on air bases and other bases, aircraft carriers, etc., as personnel haulers and for misc. utility use.

Check out how large the interior is! The seats fit three across, and you could easily fit 2 more guys in the back.

Now, when I'd talked to Fred before on the phone, he told me he also has an "amphibious Jeep". So I was thinking the typical USMC M38 model with the snorkel, extended exhaust pipe, waterproof ignition, etc.

Umm........no.

Check this out! Looks like a mini-DUKW. These beasts were built on the Ford GP chassis, that's GP - the prototypes that came before the GPW! This has an 86" wheelbase, not the 80" wheelbase of the GPW and MB. This has 4-wheel drive, and a propeller drive! Some of these were actually used in the Normandy invasion.

I was looking forward to seeing the Davis 3-wheeler, but this just blew me away. Fred said they're very scarce and rare, last one he'd heard of sold for $170,000.

I'm going to have to spend a good part of my day tomorrow pulling skids and wheels off to clean all the mud out. Had a healthy vibration at 55+ even after rinsing it off in Loveland. Just a heads up, there isn't a lot of good places to eat in Buena Vista from my experience. We ate at Casa del Sol last weekend, and well, I drove semi for two years and not one truck stop(choke and puke) matched how bad the food was at this place, lol. No way my rig can handle that trail, good luck and get pics.

For those coming along the trip for tomorrow has been postponed obviously due to this crazy weather. I hate mud and I don't want to spend the entire day winching out of mud holes. We will likely go in two to three weeks. I will post up a firm date/time when we have one set.

Should get my TJ back next week. Redoing gears to 4.88 and Yukon Griz locker for rear along with kit to make it more Dana 44 like. New wheels and tires, gonna be 35's with 3" body lift and 1" engine lift. After I practice a bit with the new mods maybe I can try and keep up on some of these trails.

That you can. Even stock they are relatively capable. Do you have a mods list lined up or are you going to stay stock?

From what you are describing you should be just fine with most of what I have been running. The hardest stuff I have been messing with is 7/10. Until I'm locked I would really struggle with the 8 and up trails.

Here are a few vids from Chinaman....pretty fun trail!

Had to blaze my own trail through the snow on part of that last one. Been there before on quads so knew where a road should be but was all white with snow. I quit after a while though because I was by myself and no winch yet and not too many passers by :)

I am buying some amp powerboards. I was going to buy them from 4 wheel parts and get them installed there. Has anyone had any experience with the shop in Denver? Is ther a better place to get them installed at? It will be around $360 for installation. I do not want to install them myself since I would have to splice into the wiring harness. Any help would be appreciated! Did a search, could have sworn that I may have asked this before.

Several years a go I won a set of TnT Guardian Sliders. I finally got around to installing them the past few weeks. These are aluminum with a UHMW skid. They are way lighter than the Poison Spyder ones I previously had.

The main reason I procrastinated so long was I would need to instal high clearance body mounts with the sliders since I have a 1" body lift. My mounts were in bad shape from hitting rocks so they really needed to be replaced anyways.

In this pict the middle mount is done and the rear old one has been cut off.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc129/newracer/Jeep/Sliders/7B579C62-82B3-448D-92F5-4C4F8999B57C_zpsgmsy9ez2.jpg (http://s218.photobucket.com/user/newracer/media/Jeep/Sliders/7B579C62-82B3-448D-92F5-4C4F8999B57C_zpsgmsy9ez2.jpg.html)

Get the slider in place, my Poison Spyder corner needed a little trimming to match the slider.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc129/newracer/Jeep/Sliders/9AA41AE6-6E94-48DB-8497-182E5A6D86AC_zps5doen3ob.jpg (http://s218.photobucket.com/user/newracer/media/Jeep/Sliders/9AA41AE6-6E94-48DB-8497-182E5A6D86AC_zps5doen3ob.jpg.html)

Actually the install wasn't bad just a little time consuming. I really like that my body mounts are now higher and protected. The only downside is that I could not tie my A pillar cage mount into the frame as there was no room with the slider in place.

I'm hoping that included cleaning up the body panels under the armor before you put them back on, looks like the beginnings of a little future rust issues.

newracer
08-25-2014, 08:04
I did, pretty much all of that was just dirt. There was one small spot with a little rust. I will also seal the top of the slider so water cannot get in from the top.

You aren't kidding I bought mine in 2005 and this is happening.

Finally finishing up the remainder of rear suspension on my lift... Now to decide between Rokmen or Savvy for the tummy tuck skid and the gas tank skid.... Mag chloride and a tummy tuck has me worried I do not want to rust things out under there just because I have a hard time getting the mag chloride out from any hard to get at places.

I'm still hoping to run wheeler lake this year. Haven't made it up yet this summer yet.

Bill Moore was such a bug-fest this year that my wife wouldn't stay more than a few minutes. She was hoping for a nice relaxing picnic by the lake but we ended up getting eaten alive. That hasn't been a problem at Wheeler in the past - but this year with all the moisture...??

I didn't notice any bugs at the lake. It was a cooler day though. It even snowed/sleeted on us.

Took two total NOOBs out to MSV and Coney Flats. One in a totally stock '14 Toyota Tacoma the other in a '14 JK Sahara with a 2.5" lift and 33s. I was in my stock '07 JKU Rubi.

They both listened well to my spotting and did great. My buddy in the JK is kind of anal about his vehicles and was constantly worried about scratching his flares and wheels. Made for a very long day since he was going so slow.

Not a lot of picts, hopefully my friends will send more that I can post.

Man I wish I didn't procrastinate on getting flat fenders. I wanted Rokmen's version and was going to get them this year. When I went down there to have my spring perches relocated they said they do not have any more kits for the TJ/LJ and do not intend to have any more kits manufactured so now I have to figure out which other version go go with. Sucks because I really liked their stuff.

I need some sliders for the new jeep and trying to decide. Don't plan on heavy rock climbing and the kids need a step to help get in.

So I was in the same boat a year or two ago. How old are your kids?
Looks like you still have the rubi rails on your jeep, plus you have the AEV 3.5 or 4.5 lift, right?

Best cheap option: Keep the rubi rails, and get the tube kit for them. The rubi rails are honestly pretty darn great for what they are at protection, and the tube will give you a little extra "step"

One very nice expensive option you didn't list: RSE step sliders

https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=502865929724915&set=vb.207377069273804 &type=3&permPage=1

I would probably look at Nemesis step sliders over Poison Spyder. PS went through some changes a few years back - they still make good stuff, but have seen some issues with fit and quality control in the last couple years. Maybe they have it under control now.

Metalcloak aren't bad at all.

I would probably skip Ace but might be ok for your needs.

What I did: put in some extra grab bars behind the headrests. LOL. The kids love climbing in and out of the jeep. They think it's "cool". (For reference, I have a 6 and 11 yr old, with a couple years experience on my 4.5" lift with 37" tires).

If you can wait, I'd drive it a while longer to see if you get used to it without them, and maybe consider joining myself and others for a trip out to Moab for EJS in late March or the All4Fun here in Colorado, where you can really see a lot of different configurations first hand. I'm assuming you're probably pouring over all the boards, looking at pics and reading reviews, etc. My impression was that a lot of the options looked and behaved different than I thought they would when I saw them in person, and I spent a lot of time on the boards when I was building my rig up.

Brian
11-07-2014, 00:36
This is a cheap, (maybe temporary?) option too, if you need something now but don't want to invest in a full set of new armor/steps:

One last thing to think about - weight. Those bumpers you have aren't light, and I don't remember what tires you're running but the Toyos I have are super heavy. If you add something too heavy just as a step (and don't really plan to need it for hardcore armor, etc.) then you might find yourself having a hard time on a hot summer day as you drive west out of the mountains into the Eisenhower tunnel. It's frustrating to have your awesome rig start driving like a dog so you have to pull into the slow lane with the semis. :) I have that probably about every third time in the summer, and am very aware of the weight I'm adding to the rig at this point. Sure you can probably adjust it with re-gearing, but the cost is not attractive.

Kids are 5 & 8. Jeep has the aev 3.5" lift.

I like the handle idea! I'll try the handles for a short term fix.

I like the look of the metal cloak and the added protection for trails, door dings etc.

Thanks for the help!

The main question I have with the metal cloak ones are how the tubes attach to the rocker. I like being able to change the angle, but does it provide enough strength?

Let me know if you have any trouble finding them. There are a ton of options, lots of companies make something and there are DIY options out there too for saving a few bucks. I went for a more OEM-look and have them on the roll bars and behind the headrests too.

I also have a buddy who put stirrups on his. They drop down when needed, and pull up into the jeep when not needed. Not sure that it would match the fancy AEV jeep look though... :)

Also got two sets of these for above the doors.

I also got some that connect to the A pillar and the windshield frame.

I haven't wheeled much... been a little over a year now owning a Jeep. Still trying to get over that awkward feeling of leaning over so much flexing the jeep and stuff. Aw man... fun all around for me for sure. My buddy is on the same boat. It's truly a wonderful thing.. this Jeep thing/wheeling. [Beer]

I bought my jeep last May. This has been my first year wheeling as well. I've definitely learned a lot so far. I'll hopefully get some armour added before this season gets going good. I'm going to spend a week in Ouray at the end of July. That's going to be a blast!

My rig isn't quite equipped to tackle'em hardcore rock crawling obstacles (Long list of parts needed... as with a handful of us got, lol)... right now, I'm good for venturing off into the woods... with a few flexing here and there. We all have a lifetime to build our rigs up... [Beer]

I've had a few jeeps over the last several years or so and it seems like all I do is work on them. I've been working on my current one for well over a year. 2004 Rubicon with a 360 Magnum conversion. Haven't had much time to take it out to play. Rainbow falls is a fun place to goof off though. Grew up in woodland and spent a lot of time in those mountains.

We spent a lot of time in hackett and long water gulch up in divide. Then after the fire it was closed for a long time. They have opened some of it back up and maybe more by now. Haven't been up there in a while. As for the jeep I'm on the fence about getting rid of it. Its been sitting in the garage for far too long just collecting new parts and at this point I kinda want to focus on other hobbies. We'll see though.

Have any links/info on what is opening back up? Went there before the fire and really missed the area when it was closed. It would be nice to go back.

Hackett is open to the river and Longwater/Metberry are open to the county line. Pretty much all the barricades that were in place have been removed by someone so the latter 2 are well traveled to the river as well. I run that area about once a month or when weather allows.
Right now there is probably 6-12" of snow on most of it.

Thanks for the info.

Is across the river open?Metberry is open to the river. It was the first of the trails to be opened all of the way. Hackett has now been opened to the river as well. There is still debate whether the other side of the river will ever open again, but for now it is still closed. Call Predator 4WD if you ever have any questions as to the current status as they are still the main POC for these trails.

Your Jeep will do just fine in Ouray. With the exception of maybe Poughkeepsie gulch your Jeep will run all of the trails. The only reason I make an acceptation On Poughkeepsie is there is one obstacle that can test a drivers ability. The rest of the trails are just a drive in the woods. Just like you like.

Very nice! We ran into a FS employee last Sunday on Rampart, he was "investigating". Someone had completely destroyed the trail, it was a deep bog that someone got stuck in, and cut down trees to try and get out. Additionally people cut through the Forrest to get around the bog. Very unfortunate to say the least. Ranger gave us permission to use the illegal trail to go around, I'd have attempted the bog if I didn't have my young boys with me (even tho I have a winch).

Haha. Thanks Hurley. 3rd jeep. Just wanted a trail to get the feel of it. Let me know if you want to wheel and shoot sometime. Always looking for fun trips.

Must be nice [Beer]

Three weeks of rain made it more pothole than road. I'd still rather drive it than any cul-de-sac.

Did Kelly Flats years ago. Heard it was smoothed out because of one property owner. Good to see the fun stuff is still there.

As far as dumb asses farking up the trails, they are ruining it for all of us. Pick your poison and there is a percentage that stands head and shoulders above all the other idiots.

Getting my rig moving after a couple of years. Tracked the problem down to the dist. New Pertronix Ignitor is on the way.

Big Wall
10-30-2015, 08:12
Going up the wall after the steps we heard loud pop. We took a quick look and didn't see anything broken. I made it up the wall and further down the trail. The steering started feeling weird and then a grinding noise started. I stopped and found the break.

We made a trail repair there and made it to the end of the loop in the dark. I left my Jeep there overnight. We came back the next day, made a better repair and luckily made it out.

I've been watching a lot of 4wheeling videos recently, and I see that whenever people are going up a V-Notch, they always put one side in the bottom of the notch, instead of straddling the notch. I never understood why people do that. Is there a technical reason, or is it just a matter of picking a difficult line to see what your truck can do?

EDIT: After a brief search I found a perfect example of what I'm talking about. I always figured some careful placement and smooth pedal work would make it possible to straddle a notch, even with them usually being muddy.
