I'm not the best off road driver, but I agree with you if this little girl can do a better job.

spent three years building this with my then 15 year old son, sold it last year, he never liked the off road we switched to Duramax, you name it, it had it; built axles, lockers, custom built transmission, oh yeah and a supercharger

Wow that's too bad, I would have killed to have my dad help build me something like that. Like Irving said, at least you got to spend time with him.

Dang! All that hard work, at least it was a project you did together. Most guys these days can't change their own oil or a tire. The life lessons he got were priceless. Looks like a sweet rig.

I REALLY wanted to keep it for myself but had to much loot stuck in it. You guys are right, some of my most valuable time with my son. Jeeps are a lot more fun and much more affordable than the Duramax.
We did the heavy wrenching but had the pros do the technical stuff, most all of the parts came from CL, I miss the haggling for used parts.

Best shots I have of it from last weekend. Just a 98 ZJ with 33s and 4.56s. Got it new in 99 and still got her. Supposed to have a winch bumper and sliders but got an M1a and scope instead.

I've always liked ZJ's on 33's, specifically the 10.50 flavor. I'd love to have a 98 W/5.9, I can keep dreaming.

It has the 10.5s on it. I think the 12.5s look a little too balloon like on the ZJs. Sucks gas but it drives nice.

Even better! Hard to tell from pics. I always thought 10.5's were a much better size than 12.5's.

Nice Jeep. [Beer]

Here is a much younger "the dude" in a YJ I built with my Dad. Obviously, lockers help! This is Terminator trail just North of Phoenix.
It makes me sick to think about what I traded it for. Not quite as built as yours, but... Tera 4:1, Tera SYE / short shaft and therefore new driveshaft, F/R ARBs, then Ford 8.8 with discs and another new rear ARB, warn winch, synth line, warn alloy front axles and warn manual hubs, PSC front cage welded in, custom lock boxes, custom 4x4x1/4 rockers, TJ flares with cutting, etc. I don't know what else and don't want to think about it.
63423

I once drove it cross country from Charleston, SC to Moab and back. (Ouch)
This is why I bought a CTD and a tow dolly. Eventually, my wife wanted to get rid of it for a new 4 door JK, which I obliged. The JK was the worst vehicle I've ever owned and after 6 jeeps, 4 of which were lifted, I hate that the JK made me hate jeep, which used to be my favorite thing. :(

Couldn't agree more. I did not like my JK at all after owning a nice TJ! Sold it off quickly after dumping 7k into RK lift, armor, 37s, etc. Would love to build a Cummins CJ or an LJ in the future. No more JKs for me!

I read through the first 30 pages of this thread the other day and have been meaning to pm you and ask how things were going with the Jeep, and in general. I'm not real Jeep knowledgeable, so you'll have to remind me which chassis style your white Jeep was.

Wild horses couldn't drag me to Moab that weekend.

A local friend built an FJ40 with both of his kids (son and daughter). Both are excellent builds and the kids still talk about building with Dad.

Club trip through the Prairie Divide Road over to Lost Lake north of Red Feathers. Most of the snow had melted but there were still some big drifts to bust through.

Mine was a 2011 2-door JK. The big downfall was the 3.8 minivan motor that was in those years. The new 3.6 is supposed to be lightyears better. The old 4.0 is my favorite though.

Nice, how was the weather? Still looks pretty chilly. Those pics came out great - what settings are you using? We're going to hit Top of the World here in a couple weeks, but with all the people there, I'm not sure how easy good pictures will be to take.

Can't remember if I've asked you before or not - are those the Nemesis sliders and armor? I think those step add-ons give it away. how do you like them, if so? I've been debating for a while whether I grab some or not.

Firehaus

Thanks, the weather was great, high of 75 all weekend. Turned colder today.

Yes, nemesis sliders. They had a Black Friday special 20% off so I took the plunge. I like them. The steps should be removed if your going to risk tearing them off.

Top of the world was fun, I'll be interested to hear how you'd rate the trail. I thought it was every bit a 7. But I took the harder bypass on the first obstacle and drove the loop counter clockwise. Wish I had another inch of ground clearance!

Picked up some extra 2016 ejs magazines if you want one.

So a question for you Jeepers here (especially the old Jeep guys ... as in the Jeeps old, not the guys ... although that probably too).

So the outer pinion bearing on the front diff of my '70 CJ5 went out and I took it to a local guy that works on Jeeps and he's telling me that the entire diff needs to be rebuilt because there are other problems inside. Its a Dana 27 so it's weak, has drum brakes up front and apparently D27 parts are getting rare and expensive.

When I bought the Jeep it came with most of a newer front axle assembly that's a Dana 30 with disc brakes. Only part I'm missing is the short axel shaft and the disc pads (although the calipers look like junk but they're not that pricey so rebuild or replace is likely in order).

The dilemma I'm having is what to do next. Rebuilding the D27 and replacing it with the D30 are both going to be about the same cost so rebuilding the D27 is pointless. That said I could just give up and sell the Jeep but at this point with the work that needs to be done I will probably lose most of what I have in the Jeep (I'm about $4k into it and will probably only get about a grand if I sold it now).

The question is, will the upgrade to D30 and disc brakes up the value of the Jeep by much? If I can make the case that sinking another $1500-$2000 into it will increase the value to the $5k-6k range then it would make sense (of course if I upgrade it I'll not sell it right away).

newracer

Replacing the D27 with the D30 will not increase the value by much.

Replacing the D27 with the D30 will not increase the value by much.

I think my mechanic's thinking was that going with the D30 would make future repairs cheaper/easier and give me a better Jeep in the here and now, but that the replacement of the front drum brakes with discs is what would boost the value the most.

newracer
04-07-2016, 22:24
All tru. Having it functional is what will increase the value. The better axle won't increase it much more.

04-08-2016, 01:37
My '56 Willys CJ5 had a D25 front axle. I put a D30 from a 1972 CJ5 on it, but not for value. I wanted the bigger drum brakes, 3" wider stance, tighter turning radius, sealed open knuckles and larger stronger shafts with more splines. Everybody in the old Jeep community said it was a perfect upgrade, and I got the whole assembly essentially for free.

The front driveshaft went to crap in the JK so I bought a replacement from Adams Driveshaft. My son swapped them out today.

I haven't taken it anyplace too technical, mainly because I am usually by myself out in the desert. Plenty of uranium 'roads' all around Moab to get your slick rocking and throwing rooster tails of loose sand for a weekend warrior.

Moab used to be wall to wall landcruisers .. didn't see a single one this last trip.
