The good news is there's no way to prove you did anything wrong.

My heart hurts to be forced from my home state. I always thought this would be my home, my children as well. To be forced into a position to find work and home elsewhere by people who are not even Coloradans is painful. I know no one in a free state, I truly feel that we (Colorado) were the tipping point.

Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, asked that HB 1226, a bill to ban concealed weapons on campus, be postponed until May 10, two days after the end of the session. The move effectively killed the bill.

After 7/1 you can't buy any magazine that accepts an extension that brings the capacity past 15 rounds.

Also, you can't transfer magazines which are more than 15 rounds, or can be converted to 15 rounds (all magazines), so your firearms are inoperable (and confiscated) in one generation.
This should end with Morse getting the names read aloud of the Senators voting against this amendment.
Our guest count is down to 24.
He got the 'stache from Chuck Norris.
What's going on with them talking about banning ALL magazines?Lundberg brought up that the magazine capacity bullshit "effectively" bans ALL mags because all mags have removable base plates. Removable base plates would easily allow mags to be expanded either via currently available mag parts or 3-d printer parts. He then pointed out this shit is going to be the eventual banning of all guns.

What's going on with them talking about banning ALL magazines?
The readily modified clause in the bill opens it up to all magazines that can at all be taken apart, so basically any magazine that can have the floor plate removed and extended in any way is banned. ie any magazine that's not welded shut, or has physical block in the body, cannot be sold, transferred, etc.
Thank you gentlemen for the explanations.

SB 196 was placed there as a red herring, something to be so over the top that Dems could vote NO and not expose themselves too much. Morse doesn't give a damn, he's out next year anyway.
Keep up the pressure on 1224, very close. Senator Nicholson, barely won in 2010...lots of Dem money for reelection only goes so far if you have pissed off your entire district.

It's all a game, even to the Rs. The intro of the MIL exemptions amendment forced the Dems to go on the record, and appear hostile to all the MIL in CO, especially after Hodge's PTSD comment.
My wife is a psychologist, and she flipped her shit when Hodge brought that up; she saw it as a slap to the face to just generalize veterans, as she works with MIL and life transitions

I would guess that if this passes, many gun owners, no matter their politics, will leave the state by then, which plays into the agenda; fewer people who oppose you, more who support you.
People will think "OK maybe a 10 rd mag isn't so bad", and they get used to it..sucks some of the will out of the fight. Other problems replace gun issues, so laws remain in place for another decade
or so, or till the next shooting. Then another wave of legislation will magically and quickly appear "We have to do more to protect the children!"
Lather, rinse, repeat

They will do what NY did. Lower the number, only grandfathter ones at the old level, and outright ban all above the old level...
So your mags over 15 would be banned and you could only load your 15 rounders to the new limit...

You do realize that that won't change the laws? This isn't a political thing. I don't care about dems v repubs I care about freedom. When these bills pass that will be a BIG chunk of our freedom and those are 'incremental steps' towards even worse ones to happen before 2014. Agreed. I believe the Republic ended several years ago. There are now more takers than makers. There will never be anything resembling a valid vote ever again. It is over. At some point, it will be time to rebuild. I just don't know when, where, or how it will begin - or end. Exciting Times!
Even if we get a majority in both houses, it is much harder to overturn laws or repeal them. Our government rarely acts to make itself smaller.

I do realize that things are very dreadful right now. I am 5th generation Coloradoan and I am not going to leave until its hopeless. I have seen legislation changed many times over the years and the shit were seeing now could be reversed with a change of legislators. I work in the one of the most democratic dominated work places (education)and I can tell you that these measures and others have the many of males upset who typically pull the lever for democrats. Personally I am very conservative but my work role allows me to interact with hundreds of people everyday. Many of the democrat females are upset about how these so called representatives have described them and to told them they cant decide how to defend themselves. What I am saying is these clowns also did some damage to their base and they will be very vunerable because of the things they are doing. So I am not giving up just yet. I will write letters this weekend and attend a meet and greet with Senator Newwell this morning . I am hopeful that we have a weekend to work.
Enjoy your Democrats Senators!!!! If they are there is because too many people vote for them, now ENJOY!!!
Like all humans all of you forgot this in 4 years and vote for the same shit again.
the trouble is that both Party platforms are absolute shit.
The Republicans stood up for our gun rights, spoke intelligently, and voted unanimously. The party is a coalition of people and you are not going to agree with everything because not everybody is going to agree; but on the stuff that really matters, they do what they should!

Please ask them to respectfully contact their Dem Senators and clue them in on the fact that these actions are in danger of alienating the moderate and mildly conservative registered Dems. The Dems won last election due to their energized base and
picking up independents. Lots of independents are gun owners, and many Dems as well, moreso these days with more people than ever being first time gun owners. Would be very shortsighted to lose the base due to this.

The Republicans stood up for our gun rights, spoke intelligently, and voted unanimously. The party is a coalition of people and you are not going to agree with everything because not everybody is going to agree; but on the stuff that really matters, they do what they should!
Agreed. Its about time you (Merl) and others looked beyond the end of your nose and realized that while I may not agree with everything a politician says, or everything a party does, it does not mean I should get pissy and throw a hissy fit. Stand together, or die alone.

Enjoy your Democrats Senators!!!! If they are there is because too many people vote for them, now ENJOY!!!
Like all humans all of you forgot this in 4 years and vote for the same shit again.
I don't believe it will be forgotten. Again this shit has not gone to final vote. Let's keep the pressure on.
Even if we get a majority in both houses, it is much harder to overturn laws or repeal them. Our government rarely acts to make itself smaller.
Especially if there's a few more high profile shootings between now and then...

This shit come with an agenda, they don't hear us, they just stay in the seat at the session al day to make a "show" but they don't hear us. I can bet that they plan to pass all remaining bills.
I'm feel so sad because I came here founding the best state and the best place to live and now this shit are pushing Colorado to the hole. In some years Colorado will be like the poor California and New York and have a number In the top five crappy states!

Right on I could not have said it better with your insight. The leftists are over estimating their base. It won't be there in 2014 and beyond.

I listened to the broadcast for most of the evening yesterday and it was pretty clear to me democrats would rather keep their toe to the party line instead of voting on bills for the best interest of the citizens they represent. Democrats didn't debate 1224 last night because they knew it was a bad bill in the first place (even being called out to come up and debate several times)
Yesterday showed me how easilly our political representation can be influenced from the outside.
Hopefully in 2014 when we have state elections those democrats who made party more important than what their citizens wanted will reflect in the ballot box.

the trouble is that both Party platforms are absolute shit.
No...but that statement is.
Democrat Party:
Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.
Republican Party:
The Second Amendment: Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms
We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right of self-defense. We call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights recognized in the Supreme Court’s decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago affirming that right, and we recognize the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. This also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners. We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban. We condemn the reckless actions associated with the operation known as “Fast and Furious,” conducted by the Department of Justice, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and others on both sides of the border. We applaud the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in holding the current Administration’s Attorney General in contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with their investigation into that debacle. We oppose the improper collection of firearms sales information in the four southern border states, which was imposed without congressional authority.
That's just one example. If you don't see a difference in the traditional American values laid out in each party's platform you're not looking very hard.
I'm trying to dig through all of the pages since last night, but I'll ask here. Who is the most vulnerable democrat? If we only need to swing one more before Monday, we need to work on that one. If there are a couple that look iffy, we could work on them all.

Stevie Wonder can see that these bills lack real support. It really pissed me off when there was an amendment on the floor to kill 1224 and the senator asked anyone that supports the bill to come rationally explain why it shouldn't die. The only response, was Hodge with "I urge a no vote" it's pretty sad..

I could easily find conflicting examples. 2A there is a clear leader, others not so much. This is a gun board though so I should have just kept my mouth shut.
Back to the topic, did any amendments get added to any of the bills? Saw many that were proposed and the state website is slow on getting them updated.

Nothing important, that I remember. I think any that got added were just wording changes or something like that.

According to that fat ugly cow Hodge, you can have a 28" shot gun shell...that should cause some damage.
1. They amended 1224 to allow 28" of shotgun shells in a tube.
2. They amended 1229 to give you 72 hours for lending.

Sadly went to the meeting and Newell was a no show.....it was not a loss since a nice diverse group of people were there. I will write Newell and others because I am not giving up. Yes it seems like were banging our heads, but we have some more time.
I am still hopefull for three defectors on the magazine limit because its such a damm mess and just as bad or worse than the liability act. But I would bet they will all(Senators) go for the CCW in person training, Background Check Fees, Domestic Violence , and unniversal back ground checks ( say good by to ARMSLIST, Colorado Gun List for private sales). I remember joining this site as a trading post troll in 2008, I really have enjoyed meeting people for trades on here for the last 5 years.

I've not only seen it change but I've been part of movements to get it changed. One in particular was to overturn a bill passed by the hippies not allowing any more towers to be built on lookout mountain. The funny part is originally they wanted to build a single digital tower and disassemble all the analog towers that it would replace which would actually make it look much better and allow for better services for anyone who wanted it up and down the front range. Well, all the money that could have been spent taking those down was instead wasted on a multi-year battle to get the ability to build a single digital tower. Now we all have digital TV free over the air with less power required to transmit the older analog signals. If you look towards lookout mountain you will still notice a shit ton of towers in place adn the hippies who wanted to 'save the mountain' have themselves to blame.
Point is, that was something that EVERYONE could benefit from and it was still a grueling nightmare to get passed. You think something as hot topic as firearms and magazines is going to be easier?
So, you can fight all you want but not this guy. My fight is now and if these pass (which it looks like they will) it will be the small bit of encouragement needed to break open the flood gates. As much as I hate to admit it I see Colorado going the way of Chicago, NY & California very soon. I'm sure there are still people living in those places being denied their rights, being turned into criminals and generally hating life 'fighting the good fight' because they're waiting for that pendulum to swing the other way.... any day now. My version of fighting is taking my tax dollars and my work ethic to a state that will afford me the basic rights that I ask in return. If enough residents and tourists did that they would realize how many people disapprove and how they need those tax dollars to exist. That's the only language they speak. Oh, Magpul wants to leave? Big whoop! Wait until that $85mil loss hits the books in a couple years. Then they will be sorry. But that's logical & analytic based on fact and figures and the opposing force we are fighting values none of which. In case you didn't notice during the last couple of weeks they truly don't give a single shit about the actual people they were elected to represent.

I respect your thoughts man, but at least fight all the way to Monday, we sway three votes we can win. I have to fight it out for a few more years, I cant be lorded over like this. I admit I have been very stressed since Sandy Hook. I just cant let these bastards destroy my way of life. If you can move on I agree why let the stress eat you away. But while your here help us out. I admit I have had dreams of a big spread in Colorado- 1000 acres out in the middle of no where, just me and my family. Hunting, shooting sports, maybe some fishing if I get some water, looking at the stars at night, just enjoying what I had as kid and sharing that with mine. These legislators are taking away that dream. If it gets really dreadful I can still do that dream elsewhere just need more time. If this stuff passes I will make sure my mag supplies are much larger than they are now before July 1st 2013. What a freaking stupid law.

Like I said, my fight is now. The rest of my statements were towards those who said I should stick it out 'just a few more years' because things were going to somehow get miraculously better just because there was another election. You'll see, when they solidify their stranglehold on the state in the next election you'll see how bad things can really get.
That being said, the three votes we need to sway won't happen. This has already been decided and now it's just going through the motions for the peasants and making it look like things are closer than they are. They're not even listening to the overwhelming response of email, letters, phone calls, tweets, facebook posts and in-person stories & debates. They don't care. It doesn't matter. I wish it did and have done my part but know it's all for not. Sorry, I had hope for weeks even though I knew it was all for not. Now I guess that part of the realization is slowly starting to take over.

They are done. The decision has been made, I watched them yesterday, not one democrat even paid attention to any argument the Republicans made. For hour upon hour, testimony was read from business, citizens, tourists..it didn't matter. It all fell on deaf ears. The senator's positions on these items were pre-determined. They didn't even have to bother to count the Yays and nays when the time to vote came, they were all known ahead of time. It's a ruse, a sham, there is no debate, their minds have been made up. Try as you and I might, it will make no difference.

Because the Division Vote was requested it showed that the count was 18-17. The question is, were Tochtrop adn Jahn allowed to defect with the understanding that the others would be in lock step? There is no reason to quit before Monday, IMO. We've come this far, may as well contact the list and give them one last shot. I emailed with one Senator this morning, and he feels they are dug in, but to make one last push. After all he did yesterday, I'll listen and try.
DJ, what senator was that? And can you share his exact wording? So I guess this means there's little hope from them? I can understand not wanting to disseminate that.
Yes, 18-17, Tochtrop and Jahn did indeed vote no on 1224. That would indicate that yeah, it's decided; but "Stranger things have happened" in the legislature.
As far as Jer's story -- I was working at KMGH/Channel 7 when that was going on. The "anti tower" folks had all kinds of weird ideas that the new tower would make their children dumb (heh) or cause autism or... something like that. The original KMGH tower had been there since 1955; and then all these folks moved in and decided they wanted them gone. (Because who doesn't have cable or satellite these days anyways?)
It wasn't as cut and dry as this but really, even if it's "difficult" the likelihood of something being done about 1224 post-passage is directly proportional to people's motivation to do something about it. The other side doesn't have "magic", just the wind at their backs - for now. I know some will choose to say "screw it, i'm done" - and that's their right. I personally hope some of us will remain after the fact and continue to push back and see what can be done about this. Absolutely within your right to think it's a waste of time, too.
But, my time to waste, so, hey, I'll waste it trying to push back on 1224.

While I don't wish to get in an argument, most of this is just defeatist attitude. Those States you're referencing have been Libtard havens for decades. While things in Colorado are "trending" that way, the idiots in control of the State only just got that control last election. Before, it had been split for years. I believe (and hope) they have overreached and will pay the price in the next election. There are just to many options still available---Mondays votes, the courts, recalls and elections. I will not quit until all these are exhausted.

Exactly. Maybe I shouldn't have watched the live stream of the House this whole time. Incredible testimony after incredible testimony and all the while... not a damn person cared. No Dem that was still in the chamber was even paying attention. What's the point? Who's listening? It's just going through the motions to screw us all. They're just playing the game now.

I've been pushing back. I've been rallying the troops as best as I can. I've been taking whatever steps granted to me but it appears as those steps are pointless when they fall on deaf ears. The fact that these reps feel they don't need to actually listen to their constituents is disgusting. It's painfully obvious that the vast majority is highly against these bills and that doesn't matter to them. They will pass and then we're all criminals.

Just got this from Sen Brophy. I would add Nancy Todd to his list, and send Jahn and Tochtrop a thank you note. I'll be busy "wasting" my time this weekend.
Dear XXXXX
Give yourself a pat on the back. After over twelve hours of debate yesterday, the senate killed House Bill 1226, which would have banned concealed carry on college campuses, and Senate Bill 196, which would have held firearms manufacturers liable for damages caused by people using their products. We couldn't have defeated these bills without the actions of thousands of Second Amendment supporters who called and e-mailed their representatives, attended townhall meetings, and came to the capitol in droves to testify on the bills and oppose the gun grabbers.
The fight's not over yet, though. House Bills 1224, 1228, and 1229 and Senate Bills 195 and 197 passed and will be heard by the Senate once again on Monday. We still have a chance to stop these bills. Yesterday, we packed the senate gallery with Second Amendment supporters, forcing senators to face the people of Colorado before voting. I hope you can make it to the capitol Monday to watch the final vote.
Monday is our last best chance to stop the gun control bills. Call or e-mail your legislators immediately and tell them to vote "no." You can find your local legislators here: http://votesmart.org/ (http://facebook.us6.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=0f1c054a41&id=e3aa137986&e=a965755151). Your legislators’ contact information can be found athttp://www.leg.state.co.us/CLICS/CLICS2013A/csl.nsf/Directory?openFrameset (http://facebook.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f1c054a41&id=9881ec8de3&e=a965755151) for the House and http://www.leg.state.co.us/CLICS/CLICS2013A/csl.nsf/DirectorySen?openframeset (http://facebook.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f1c054a41&id=c760a7a2d4&e=a965755151) for the Senate. Please be polite and voice your opinions succinctly. Also, be sure to remind your legislators that their vote on these bills could determine whether they are reelected in 2014.
HB 1224, which would ban "high capacity" magazines, passed second readings by only one vote; if we can convince one more Democrat to vote against the bill, it will die. Below is a list of Democrat legislators the Denver Post has said might be persuaded to vote “no”:

Please get ahold of these senators and tell them you do not support these bills and will not support any politician who votes for them.
Your activism made it possible for I and my Republican colleagues to shoot down HB 1226 and SB 196. We can't stop now. Your senators were elected to represent the people of Colorado. Let's hold them to their oaths.
Sincerely,
Senator Greg Brophy
The 'pushing back' and 'fighting the good fight' against these laws, should they become law, isn't a problem for those that remain, but children today, by and large, are not being raised the same as those of us in our 40's/50's/60's. When kids get suspended from school for tossing an imaginary grenade at evil, or suspended for making the symbol of a gun with their bare hand, it has an impact over time and many little minds are quite impressionable.
I'm spending this weekend in the mountains and spent much of yesterday shooting suppressed .22's off the back deck. Two eight year old boys were here (not mine, I own dogs). They preferred to spend time on their iPads...
Like it or not, there will be a shift in mentality over time and I cannot see society being as gun-friendly a decade from now as it is today.
I'm in a situation wherein it's not as easy for me to pick up and leave at the drop of a hat as it once was due to my wife's job but I do not in any way hold the viewpoint that those who chose to go are "defeatists" as some have posted. For a tiny glimpse of where that "I'm staying and fighting" mentality gets you, cruise on over to calguns.net and see how that 'good fight' is going. 30 years ago you could buy ammo at just about any gas station in Southern California - it was on the shelf right next to the booze, now CA gun owners think they're cool because they have a 10/22 that they've put an HK or AICS stock on as it looks 'tactical"!
The folks in CA and other states will 'fight the good fight', senselessly, until they're in a retirement home. I don't know about y'all but I tend to like results rather than mere endless confrontation. I have X number of years on this ball and I'd like to live my life how I want - right now, not hoping for some mirage on the horizon that continues to recede as I get closer.
As various CO companies continue to import employees for positions that aren't fillable by CO-natives, I sadly think we are going to see those people bring their coastal politics and fear/hatred of firearms with them. In many situations, this isn't a case of those people leaving a place they disliked and trying to replicate it here, it's a case of a CO employer dangling a lucrative carrot in front of their nose and people following the money.
The recall suggestions are interesting but is there some grand illusion that the folks that voted these clowns into office won't support them for doing the very things they were voted in to do?!
If there's only one thing hardcore liberals are good at doing, it's getting out the vote. I live in Boulder and see this firsthand: if they don't get what they want on first try, it's try try again, and again, and again. If there's to be a recall, it's not going to be a cakewalk.
I feel truly blessed that I'm 46 instead of 6.

How does everyone figure that local online marketplace will be destroyed? Can't you arrange trade/sale as usual but use an FFL to facilitate the transfer under new law?
Yeah, you could put it up for sale online, instead of meeting at such and such random spot, you will have to designate the ffl you want to meet at, figure out a time to meet him, stipulate who pays the fees etc.

I would imagine that's how it would be done.

Sure . . . but a lot of guys will disregard the new law and keep doing the same thing they have been since they've owned guns -- screen potential purchasers, settle on a deal, meet at a safe location, verify residency, and make the transaction. Adding a FFL complicates things several ways, not just the "background check" . . . there will be a permanent record of that transaction (regardless of what people claim or what is "legal"), and those records can be accessed by the DHS umbrella of federal LE agencies . . . including IRS. Did you declare any monies received from those transactions on your taxes and can you provide receipts? I didn't think so.
I also predict a lot of guys will get caught in LE stings and lose their 2nd Amendment rights and their entire collections over this.

Hatidua. Some of the comments by Jer and others, IMO, are the exact definition of defeatist attitude. Saying something is over before all options are exhausted. I don't blame him or the others for feeling this way and in Jer's (and others) case his/their "defeatist comments", to this point, don't jive with their actions. They are still fighting while claiming it's over and a waste of time[Beer] There are many of us here willing to carry on the fight, to it's conclusion, without the discouraging comments basically telling us we're wasting our time and it cannot be stopped.
And by the way, I also feel this current battle is lost and a "waste" of time but the war is far from over.

I've written politicians many hundreds, if not thousands of times in the past eight weeks (I think my past posts urging others to write likely bordered on annoying). Phone calls to our legislators? - more than I can remotely recall! Donated more money to organizations fighting this than I could rightfully afford. Have offered to take anti's to the range, etc. At the same time, I'm not oblivious to what is going on in society.
Do I want my rights taken away? -obviously not. Do I see where things are headed? -sadly, yes.
I'm neither tossing in the towel nor moving. I'm just living in a state in which many hold one of my hobbies to be a blight on society.

Will any of these proposed laws matter when the inevitable collapse of the economic system comes?
Will any of these proposed laws matter when the inevitable collapse of the economic system comes?
Wellll - in full consideration of the abrupt thread drift involved in a response, I'd suggest that the laws could be very important if/when the economic system collapses. In that eventuality, having maximum firepower could easily mean the difference between life and death for self and/or family. Further, such an economic collapse is almost certain to NOT result in overwhelming social chaos overnight. Even a worst case collapse is likely to occur over some period of time - weeks, months, or longer. During that period, some amount of law enforcement will continue, and that enforcement could easily result in loss of important firepower when the full weight of the collapse occurs.
Of course this is all entirely hypothetical and subject to incessant debate/argument in other threads or on other fora.
IHTH

I'll continue to try to persuade the Senators to see reason. Emails, snail mail, and faxes sent today. I suspect that we may see the mag ban shot down if anyone has any sense AND the balls to defy the DNC.

They need both HB 13-1228 and HB 13-1229 to pass. The financial notes of HB 13-1228 already include how the budget that supports the portion of CBI that handles BGCs is to be taken out of the CBI budget and used somewhere else, in an obvious TABOR bypass. They can't afford to not have both bills, as they need the BGC revenue stream to make up for the budget divergence.

According to this bill, you can loan a gun to a friend "while hunting". How is that defined? When they leave your house to go to the GMU where they intend to hunt? In the field, if they immediately upon taking possession move on the stalk? It's not legal to hunt while on a road or highway, and since the loan is only valid where hunting is allowed, transport in a car or truck is a class 1 misdemeanor.

Good points Rucker , Just because a rifle is sighted in for one person the others persons zero can be very different. The process of zeroing and preparing properly for a hunt exceeds 72 hours. Hell it takes some time to get range time and to travel. Either way lame bill, not enforceable unless they use as something to stack something on to you.
