I haven't been in about 7 years. When I lived out there, I used to go a few times a year and it was good.

I'm not sure how McDonalds could be considered as better even if In And Out totally went to shit. I'm sure cancer could even taste good if someone spent enough time in a lab flavoring it.

Nothing, depending on the quality of the steak and the roll and the price. I haven't seen any place around where you can drive up and get a good steak and a roll to go.

Far too many places spread themselves too thin, relying only on name recog, without monitoring/regulating/controlling quality and consistency.

I'm sure we all know of one or two exceptional joints that tried to expand, only to compromise and fail.

1- the time frame, 7 years can make even Mila Kunis look horrible (hoepfully not)
2 - consistency of the patty, lifeless, soft unlike a decent burger. When you bite in to one you expect Flavor, CONSISTENCY OF REAL MEAT The I&O had neither.
3- The bun and cheese had more flavor and consistency than the burger.

Likewise. We do FF rarely, if that. However it was on the way to the airport and we needed to hit the store across the street from it. I see folks lined up at the clown's drive thru window when there are 4-5 good restaurants within 3 blocks of it. Drive thru fast Food or sit down meals?? No brainer here.

That is bizarre, I have never had a bad burger from In N Out, or Charlies Chili for that matter. Have not found their equal in CO.

Never ate at an actual In N Out but have eaten at Drifters here in Colorado Springs (which is an In N Out clone started by, I believe, a former In N Out exec).

It seems to me that the point of the place is not that the food is awesome or that it's a superior burger (although I found it to be a better than average burger) the point is that its cheap but still good. I do agree there's probably a bit of over-hype to the place as most of the people that go on and on about the place are Expat Californians so it's probably more about home sickness than it is about a good burger.

Comparing it to Red Robin or 5 Guys or Crave or Smash Burger or one of those other expensive "gourmet" burger joints makes as much sense as complaining that its not as good as a chopped Kobe beef burger at The Broadmoor. Its kind of like complaining about the quality of the Mexican food at Taco Bell ... Taco Bell isn't Mexican food, it's Taco Bell, so within its own particular idiom it's pretty good, but no its not comparable to real Mexican food.

Compared to McDonalds or Burger King I'd say (assuming Drifters is a good facsimile) that In N Out comes off pretty well. And considering my wife and I can get two burgers, two drinks and a metric ton of pretty good french fries for $13 we'll probably be back.

That said, for your "big chain" burger joint nothing beats Carls Jr.
