Yep. Step 1 is to not live in a place with a large number of minorities (not that there's anything wrong with the vast majority of minorities but the honest truth is that the forces of social unrest originate in these communities).

In my neighborhood we're the minority. Of course the hispanics have been here sine the early 1800's, if not earlier.

i used to be all about the bugging out, as i feel i would be much safer and able to survive fine out there. but i think its just impractical. hell, denver has enough problems with lack of easy routes out of town, it would be a mess if it was truly severe civil unrest. as such, bugging in it is. i have a tower with 360 degree views that i would probably perch in with a few rifles. basement has a hidden safe room with a vault door and escape hatch to the outside. i really wanted to build the house out of concrete but it just wasn't plausible cost wise. as cool as it would be to be mostly bullet proof and definitely fire proof, the likelihood of that made it impossible to convince me to spend another 60k.

I've tossed around the idea of buying an armored vehicle like a ferret or something so if need be i could travel fairly safely, but again its unlikely and having 20k to blow just isn't going to happen anytime soon. plus you are then limited on capacity. right now with my wife and i its fine but with kids too difficult. any armored vehicle much bigger, except maybe a brdm, has a cost just too high.

in general i think if its just unrest people are going to stay away from a house heavily armed and not afraid to use it. i live in town but on 1.5 acres with decent space on all sides and at the end of a dead end cul de sac. leo my neighbor is heavily armed and he's across the street. the chances some every day goons would really try to push their luck with that is awfully low.

now if red dawn occurs thats a different story. luckily thats even less likely.

Pre-Cut plywood sheets for inside of the windows. Black out curtains. Throw some dresser drawers clothes and electronic on the lawn to make the place look like it has already been looted. Thaw out some rotten chicken livers (fish bait) from the freeze along with s quart or two of deer blood and scatter on front door, rear door, and porch. Maybe they will look at the place and move on

EXACTLY! When the weakest die off I'm collecting the rest as conscripts and my well armed neighbors and I are holding Cherry Creek from the Platte to the damn.

Holding it until the authorities are able to get things under control. Then they can POLITELY ask for it back...

If Denver gets to a "Bug Out" scenario the rest of the country, and particularly the east coast, is already ashes.
