This was going to be my question. Assuming you get that one bear who wants into your home at what point can you defend? Does make my day type situation apply or do you wait until he's chewing on your skull?

A year or so ago there was a woman here in La Veta who heard noises in her kitchen and found a bear trashing it. She tried to shoo it out and was severely mauled and in critical condition. Trust me, if I find a bear in my kitchen and I can't scare him back out I'll make a good bear out of him. I'd either take a dead paw and use the claws to tear my jeans or fire up my tractor and bury him on my 35 acres.
BTW: DOW says you cannot kill a bear or mountain lion attacking your dog since they are considered personal property and not livestock (I'd need to fire up the tractor again)

Chances are if you have to kill a bear (or mountain lion) you're either going to be in town where people aren't really going to question whether or not it was a "good shoot" (nobody is going to assume you were poaching in a city park) or you're going to be out in the the country where the 3 S's apply.

was made out to be a hero by the press. Most people around here think she's an idiot. This happened just across the highway from me.

Bears will be Bears. But the CPW has no fuk'n idea how to handle them.

Make loud noises, bang on pots and pans: this makes a bear climb a tree right next to your house and stay there for 16+ hours.
Clean your BBQ grill, never ever in 30+ years had a bear care about wtf was ever on the grill.
Bears like birdseed, they like hummer food, they like other types of pet food etc.
I have had coffee on my deck with a bear that just seemed to like the view across the valley of Mt Evans, not interested in any thing else including me.
Critters are critters, we can'/don't know how to predict what they will do. So just enjoy them, hunt, fish and realize we are in their habit.

Short story I was fishing the Shoshone in May (spring run off), a big boar grizz came out on the opposite side about 20 yards, water was very fast too fast for wading. So he kept an eye on me and I the same. he knew water was too swift for him so he sat and watched. Of course I moved on.

Davsel, I shared your story with my best friend and his wife who live about a mile (my guesstimation) north of Hwy 24 in Florissant. Here was her reply:

"Neighbor down the road just msg'd me that we have a bear. No news there, but she said it killed a PONY. Might be the same one he saw. DOW will be out looking for him tonight."

A pony? Sure it wasn't a big cat? I find it hard to believe a black bear would go out of its way to kill such a big animal, but it's possible I guess.

As far as a bear INSIDE my house.....it'll be a rug in short order.
