If your neighbors told you there are no bears in Florissant they are not very bright...to put it nicely. Place has plenty of bears.
Black bears are nothing to worry about. Occasionally they get into something they shouldn't (car, trash, occasional house) and make a mess but it's because someone left it open and/or left food out.
Maybe the neighbors didn't mean the animal ... maybe they meant large, harry homosexuals?
