If there is any concern, I can run a background using public records for people. I do quite a bit of that for people with children when they're moving into new/unknown areas, as well as "dating checks" for people. The sites provided in the thread are a great start, but each one of them has a statement that says not every criminal is listed.

I'm not trying to make people paranoid, mind you. But there are options available.

I am going to have an unpopular opinion here - but I have seen this as an outside observer, and its not pretty.

The whole "Sex Offender List" is fundamentally and totally broken. There are people on that list that *REALLY* shouldn't be there. I know of two folks, both of which lost all their rights and their entire fucking lives (can't get jobs, can't go anywhere, have to be subjected to some of the most awful tests you can think of -- routinely) just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. No child (or even 2nd party adult) was harmed (or even involved) in either case but due to how the laws are written, these two people are forever totally and completely fucked.

Case in point for 1 of them:

He, and his son, were in an orchard that he owned, spraying for weeds, adult jumped off his tractor and took a piss behind a tree that was 60' from the road. The son later told the mother what the father had done (son was 6 and was talking about riding on the tractor). The mother then called the cops and said the father exposed himself to the child. Everything goes fucking ape-shit. Guy is arrested, goes to county jail over a long weekend, is arraigned at 50k bond -- which he can't afford. Wife empties bank account and give him divorce papers on Monday (and moves in with her boyfriend that she had been cheating on him with for a year or so). The son is 15 now and wants to live with his dad - but cant. Son feels like it is all his fault and has tried to commit suicide twice. I won't bore you with all the other details -- but the guy is totally fucked now. Completely and totally. All because someone accused him of something he didn't do.

He is on the list - FOR LIFE. Nothing he can ever do about it. EVER.
