wouldn't an AR pistol/sbr chambered in .223 or 300aac be the ticket?
small enough to keep in vehicle, but not sure on the securing method.

    scary scenario for sure

I regularly have a rifle in the truck (range trips before/after work). I would keep rifle there all the time but fear with my luck the truck itself would get stolen.

My work truck has a good hiding spot that would not easily be found during a smash and grab, but is not secure against thorough search.

The boss has given me permission to build a locking clamp system but it would still not be secure if thieves take the truck vs quick break in.

Because the chances of someone breaking into my vehicle are significantly higher than the OP scenario, I would prefer not to have a "truck gun". In the event someone were to break into my vehicle and steal a firearm from me, I'd feel pretty terrible if it were used in a heinous crime of some sort. If I could secure it in the same fashion as the guns in my home, then I may reconsider, but it's just not really feasible for me. I'm content with a pistol or two on my person, and a varying number of mags depending on how far I plan on traveling that day.

Always been surprised that there aren't more products for securely storing weapons inside of trucks that is discreet. Easy enough to do in a vehicle with a trunk but often thought about stowing an AR and shotgun in the back of the crew cab. I can store them under the back seats that fold up, but they are in the way when I need to store something inside the truck. I would prefer to attach it to the back up the cab behind the seatback, but unfortunately it doesn't fold down.

Given your scenario, escape and evade on foot, away from the threat, while using the vehicles as cover. The people most in danger are the ones closest to the threat. If I were in one of the unlucky vehicles closest to the attackers, then the handgun I am carrying will have to do. Three on one is bad odds regardless of the weapon choices, but as you said, it would be a bad day for all involved.

If I were to carry a vehicle weapon, it would be a shotgun and I would keep slug and buck onboard. My biggest concern with keeping a weapon in a vehicle is vehicles are too often the target of thieves. If they get my parked and unoccupied vehicle, I really rather not give them the added bonus of a gun.
Escape and evade is definitely the preferred option. In fact, you may have just given me my best option. If I'm in the first few rows of vehicles and escape isn't an option, I'm likely in handgun range. If I'm far enough back in the traffic jam I can use the vehicles for cover and make my escape on foot.

Definitely a good option. For me though, I'd rather not use a weapon like that in a defensive situation for the sheer nightmare it would likely be explaining the legality of it to the authorities or in a courtroom.

This. I have a crew cab as well and share your sentiments.

I've actually considered whether having some sort of Rat Pack built to go in the back of the cab would be a feasible option.

For those not familiar with the Rat Pack, here's the type of thing I'm talking about. The one I envision would be smaller and mount in the cab and slide out the rear door on the driver's side.

After reading Day of Wrath (trying to avoid spoilers, but there may have been something similar to the OP scenario in that - definatly recommend reading), I started looking into the truck gun concept, which, based on some of the same concerns mentioned (i.e. theft), morphed into looking into the feasibility of putting together a short 300blk pistol/sbr that can be kept with me at all times when out and about....especially if you add in something like a Law gen3 folder, they get mighty compact and portable - like fit in a laptop bag portable. .....

Fold-up Kel-Tecs fit in a back pack. PCC or .223 versions.

7.5" AR pistol with Sig Brace travels with me most frequently.
Built from used parts, I'm not out much money if it gets stolen.
Longer trips, I bring the Tavor.
These short rifles fit nicely behind the passenger seat with the rear seat folded forward in my truck.

In the traffic jam scenario, I would be concerned with the guy three cars behind me, shooting me in the back if I stepped out and started firing on the beabs.

Quick question with regards to this very issue. What are the laws regarding the Denver ban on "assault weapons" specifically with regards to AR type pistols. Have had a truck AR for the last few years and was reminded by a good friend of mine to watch out in Denver and Boulder as I might get a cop with a bug up his/her butt who wants to make an example out of me. Looked at the penalties and it's no less than $100 fine and no LESS than 10 days in jail. Ok, so I dump the AR and use my 300AAC pistol. Thoughts? Appreciate any input...
