BTW does anybody else think an M1 Carbine would be an excellent survival / Bug out SHTF gun? It’s so much lighter and handier than my AR.
I'd take a mini 14 over an m1 carbine or garand for shtf, but I don't find the AR to be heavy or cumbersome

Depends on how much junk you put on your ar15, if you want an ar15 thats about the same weight or lighter than an m1 carbine then built a colt 723 clone especially an early style one with a pencil barrel.

As far as an m1 carbine being a good shtf gun.... The rifle itself is fine i guess but if its a true appocoliptic event then good luck trading for or finding ammo. In my oppinion even 7.62x39 would be much easier to find or trade for than 30 carbine.

The AR is ten time what the m1 carbine is. In a shtf situation 30 carbine will be non existent, 223/556 would be much easier to come by. Just my opinion.

Ha! Funny to run across this. Short version ?nope, I still haven?t got it back together. I work in education and report back to work mid-July, which is when I looked at it last. WC, thanks again for your offer generous to help, and I?m sorry for not getting back to you. Once I report back to work I typically have a very busy year?that was certainly the case this year?and I actually haven?t been back on this site until a couple of days ago.

Anyone here received an M1 Garand from CMP lately? Are the Service grades once again available on line? I have learned that they may indicate that they are sold out of a certain grade but in fact they may be working to release some in the very near future. Currently not many Garands being sold by individuals on the CMP forum.

The CMP was closed for a while due to Covid, I think they are running on a very limited operation at the moment so most of their models are currently showing as “sold out”. They have tens of thousands of Garands that they recently imported from the Philippines, once they are back up and running you will see them come back up in stock.
