One of the lasting impressions from this event was how a concept that I've known for a long time suddenly got very real to me; the idea that order in our society is not guaranteed, it is fragile and only held together by general consent. As in, if half the people collectively stopped paying taxes or obeying laws, it could be a couple weeks till life became a post-apocalyptic movie. It seems like the insurrectionists at the capitol could have done much more and lasting damage to our country if they had been a little more organized or had loftier goals. Their relatively small numbers doesn't mean that much.
I wonder if some of those people later that night had a similar but guilty realization, that what they had done at the capitol could have been the spark that started a civil war and ended our Nation.
