There were several times between 1996 - 2001 when I filled up for less than $1.00/gallon. I think the lowest I ever saw would have been ~ mid 1997 for around $0.79 in Charlotte, NC.

Truth. Gas was under $1/gal right before the 1996 election. It hadn't been that low since the Nixon administration. IIRC, Clinton had also released oil from the strategic reserve to keep prices down during the summer of 1996 when they were already at a price where he should have been buying oil to fill the reserve but of course very few people bothered to question his moves, they were just happy to drive cheap.

While I suspect a lot of Clinton's motivations had more to do with his re-election than anything else, keeping prices down deprived the Iranians of cash for their terrorist activities. It also hurt Russia's economy, which was part of the reason Yeltsin's popularity diminished his last couple of years in office. IIRC, Yeltsin left office due to his poor health but Putin used the economic situation to fuel his rise to power (somewhat similar to a certain former corporal quite a ways west of Moscow 70 years earlier). Obama's push for higher gas prices benefited Putin and the Iranians quite a bit (pallets of cash didn't hurt the Iranians much either).

I've been expecting a return to Obama-style gas prices for some time. We weathered them before, we'll weather them again. Higher oil and gas prices will spur R&D in our domestic energy industry. I just hope the Iranians don't profit from it as they did in the past (it doesn't seem like Putin will be profiting from it if he's cut off from SWIFT).

Putin will still be selling to China and there are likely others willing to do the same.

Putin will still sell to China, and the US will still buy from China…

I remember public "wars" between stations here, probably - 2001ish. It was under a dollar at one, but supposedly at cost at that point. That's a long time ago for fine details and the lowest I personally remember it locally.

It was most certainly well under a dollar around 2000. I was getting paid $5.15/hr and had zero problems buying as much gas as I could use. I was bigtime into snowboarding at the time and was driving from WP to Breckenridge regularly. I could pay for a full tank and buy plenty of snacks with a $20.

I'm OLD. I can remember gas wars in the 70's. I actually filled Dad's Mustang up with premium as it was .22 / gallon and regular was only a few cents cheaper. I then went to Mickey D's and had a burger, fries, and a soda for less than a dollar. Dang...
