But how can the greyhound's owner be justified in drawing and firing when it was a dog that was threatened and in danger and not a human being's life that was in danger ?
Don't get me wrong I probably would have done the same thing if it were my dog that was being attacked, but how is this within the parameters of justifiable self defense ?

That's too bad, they are pretty good dogs usually. A few years ago we had to shoot one at work when out of no where it just snapped and bit half the owners face off (not literally but close). We had really no other option. But I believe any dog can snap and anyone should just be careful. Certain breeds just get bad names it seems

The humane society is going after the shooter which is b.s. We really need to back this guy. I feel my GSD is a member of my family and is treated as such. If another dog was tearing into him I wouldn't hesitate to shoot it. I don't understand what is more in-humane shooting the dog or letting the other tear the grey hound to shreds. The Humane society needs a reality check here and we need to give it to them. I'm looking for a number to call or an email to respond to on this matter.

I think I helped the dog trainer friend Shawna Pugmire, on the phone sometime last month.

On TV the police officer they interviewed said he was justified because you are justified in discharging a firearm in city limits "to protect yourself, your property or your domestic animals."

But its clear to me the shooting is unjustified ... the Bull Mastiff was just bein' friendly ... givin' the greyhound a big ole hug ... on the neck ... with his mouth. BOOM! WINNING!

Agreed...leave a 2 year old in a car in the summer, no one calls the police, leave a dog in a car in the summer, calls fill up a computer screen...what is it with people?

Since when has it been legal to fire a gun in city limits to protect property? Stopping an arson is the only thing I can think of.

    Default Retractable leashes

I read that at least one of the dogs had a Yo-Yo type retractable leash.
In my dealings with training dogs a short leash is better. The dogs learn their limit.
With the retractable leash they never really know how far they can go.
Then you have the possibility of a 100 lbs dog getting a running start and they pull you over at the end of the leash.
Much better to train the dog to heel and obey your commands.
I carry a firearm while walking my dog on a short leash.
Were conditioned to obey the law and keep dogs on a leash. The owner of the Greyhound was justified to shoot the other dog. But I would have let go of my dog which would have had a chance to run away and less chance of pulling me off balance.
Another reason to have a short leash is my dog can run free if I desire with less chance of getting hung up. My older dog learned to heel while holding her leash in her mouth.

Or just get a shock collar... put 'em on their side when they run!

I do not condone animal violence...

I trained my dog with a shock collar. Wonderful device. Wonderful dog. I also have a "yo-yo" leash and a short leash as well. All serve there purpose.
