This is what happens when the government gets too involved in the economy.

13.75/hr for a Linux Systems Engineer?

I knew the economy was getting bad, but that is harsh. My friend, who is a Solaris Admin, makes 80k/yr. Now I know why she is in constant fear of layoffs.

The imports from India aren't helping the IT sector.
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.

I'm afraid this is simply a situation of a corporation taking advantage of the currently unemployment situation.
Seems more and more companies are doing it.

Unless you are self employed... it could be your next
If their profits are up for their shareholders, it's because of the sum of a million daily decisions like laying off your friend. Companies are in business to make money. This is one way to stay in the black.

On the other hand, workers don't have a problem jumping ship and going to a higher paying job despite the investments in training and such companies put into them.

It works both ways. I've done it.

I'm getting $7.00 an hour less for the same type of work from a year and a half ago BUT I'm working. Sign of the times I'm afraid.

Here is how it works. If he takes the pay cut he can file for unemployment for the difference in pay. This difference comes from the employer's "unemployment fund" the gov. is holding onto. The more that comes out the higher your rate will be.

The former employer is only off the hook for this guy when he gets another job if he is laid off. With the pay cut he wouldn't want to look for a new job until the underemployment ran out.

On top of this the employer doesn't get the tax incentive for hiring the unemployed.
