Since you want a small gun, go ahead and look at the Shield.

The Shields are super nice. I do really like them. I suppose that 8 shots is still good, but I think I could still conceal a 9c or 40c pretty easily. I kind of like the idea of having an extra 4 rounds per mag + 1 in the chamber. Haven't fully decided yet.
One difference that the M&Pc has over the shield is that they support the standard mags. With an added sleeve you now have a full-size grip which is fantastic for the range. Depends on what you want out of the gun but it's a benefit I really enjoy.
The "k" is silent.

Sometime, could I possibly tag along with you to the range? I have yet to shoot a .40 and would like to see if I would dig it in a carry gun.
Of course. I've got a friend who wants to shoot a gun for the first time. If I ever get around to setting it up I'll let you know. Probably be at the Shootist.

Have had a 40c and a full size 45, neither with the safety. I have loved them and would not want the thumb safety. Just my .02
I might buy the one with the thumb safety and then take it out like Fromk and Teufelhund mentioned above. It's selling for cheaper. And if S&W would send me a pin to put in its place, should be pretty simple. Now, just to decide whether or not to sell my XD... hahaha
