Anybody else get suckered into buying a Ruger SR556?

Why is that? BTW I've owned 3 DI ARs and I have only had one failure of any kind, with thousands of rounds through them all. I had a 6.8 extractor break once. Why fix what isn't broke?

As far as Ruger.. they are pro Clinton's AWB. Bill Ruger made a deal to promote their 'rancher mini 14' and to ban AR-15.

What is the advantage of piston? All of the informal reliability tests that I've seen show little to no improvement over DI, and in some cases the DI has shown better reliability. Are they more accurate or something? Serious q's, no sarcasm.

I didn't know that Ruger supports an AWB. Weren't they doing a big NRA contribution thing recently?

I have both and the only benefit I have noticed is they are easier to clean.

Because that's the basis of innovation. Cassette tapes worked pretty well too at one time. Until something truly better comes along (through trial and error) you won't know how much better things could be. I think piston is a great system and has it's use. I think people on extreme ends of the piston v DI discussion in either way are just silly. They both work well and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Neither one is perfect and neither one will solve all problems.

There are reasons why failzero BCG sells and for $$$ - Piston helps prevents those pesky dirty bcg. In most classes, good instructors will insist you on running your AR wet. Piston AR runs fine w/ light lubrication. Most avid shooters don't see any major advantages, while some do. This was also the reason mentioned by the US Marine report on choosing HK416. On the other hand, dirty DI AR runs fine if you keep them wet.

The Marines also stated that piston runs better in wet, after being submerged, and muddy environment. How much better over DI? I dont know.

And yes, as early as 1989, Ruger was lobbying the Congress to ban hi cap mag - basically targeting the popularity of ar-15.

Lower heat you can take the bolt out after 90 round dump, it's cleaner, and if you have a suppressor it's supposed to be better with the gas adjustment.
