I give it a 3 out of 5. Some of the dramatic acting was bleh, but overall, good enough for 5 or 6 bucks.
Now I'm on to HEAT....oh yeah.

Saw the new Superman movie the other night ... actually quite good (but then again it was written by Christopher Nolan and directed by Zach Snyder).
Superman's an actual honest to God American hero in this one, not a whiny metrosexual like the horrid Superman Returns.

Sucked. The $7 would have been better spent on PBR.

I just saw RED2 with the wife on Friday, had me laughing out loud. John Malcovich is awesome!
You guys hear there is going to be another Taken movie made? In this one, a gender confused young man gets nabbed some where in Thailand just before his gender reassignment surgery. The bad guys don't realize their error until he goes up for auction with all the other kidnapped young girls. It's going to be called "MissTaken."
Saw The Conjuring yesterday. If you couldn't guess from my avatar, I love horror movies, and I'm always looking out for a movie that can spook out my jaded self as if I were a kid again but this movie was just OK. Nothing bad about it per se, but it's not a two-timer, ie, I can't see myself interested in seeing it a second time. Insidious, which Patrick Wilson was also in, was much better.

"The Colony"
Bad. Skip it. Seemed like a good concept, but failed miserably IMHO.
Spoiler:
A colony of ice age survivors go to see what's up with another colony of survivors who haven't responded to radio calls. Dudes go to the other colony to find it overrun with cannibals. Cannibals follow dudes back to their colony, big fight ensues, hero wins. Yawn.

Man, is there anything good on DirecTV PPV? It all looks like garbage to me.
We're in that slump right now- it happens every year- all the good holiday season movies already came out on DVD (and PPV), and all the big summer "blockbusters" aren't out on DVD yet. We're in that purgatory of movie releases where there is nothing but garbage for a few months. Your best bet is to find a good TV show and start watching it on demand/Netflix, or just watch some classics... the other day I watched Beatlejuice for the first time in probably 15 years- caught a lot more that I missed the first few times watching it when I was younger. "Hey hey! Where ya goin'? Nice f*ckin' model! *honk honk*"

Saw The Wolverine and Pacific Rim last night.
The Wolverine was a great addition to the X-men/Marvel universe. A little grittier this time, a little more edge, and toned down appropriately while still being over the top in a super hero movie fashion.
I absolutely LOVED Pacific Rim. Michael Bay had to have crapped his pants when he saw it. Great cast of lesser known folks, and they kept the proper scope so as not to quite lose the OO and AH factor as the movie carried on.
Oblivion was a decent Sci-Fi flick but fairly predictable. Good visuals.
Hangover 3 was less a comedy and more a dark action movie that just sort of wrapped everything up.
Watched a LOT of movies lately.
I had zero desire to see Pacific Rim, and am surprised to hear it was good.
I also heard that The Conjuring was a very scary movie.

Same here on both counts. The Conjuring is supposed to actually be scary and not all that gory at all. Most "horror" movies are just funny to me.
I saw "Stranded" last night. Another super-dud. Just boring as hell.

Just watched this last night- not sure if I'd say not bad, but it definitely was most certainly not good. I would say meh. I didn't love it, didn't hate it, but thinking 'what would I do in this situation?' and Mr. Hawke and Family didn't come close to what I would do. YMMV.

Likewise. It was a decently paced film that had a few twist. Looper turned out the same way for us. Wasn't expecting much but parts of it made you think, OK how can you resolve this issue.

I've been disappointed by almost every summer release so far. So I think I'll wait on it.
Saw End of Watch. Despite the earlier spoilers, I was still able to enjoy it. The more I think about it, the more I like that movie. There are a few scenes that have some great camera work in my opinion.
We also watched Side Effects. Good solid movie.
We also watched The Orphanage, Mama, and the new Evil Dead. I thought the girl from Suburgatory was great.
ETA: Just watched Beasts of the Southern Wild. I don't really know how to describe this movie. It is basically about a 6 year-old's struggle to live with her sick father in an area that gets destroyed by a hurricane. Overall, I really liked the movie and would recommend it.

John Rambo is on the Indian (dot not feather) movie channel here. If I could shoot that many people with a M2 I'd be soooo happy.
The only upcoming movie I'm excited/nervous about is "Ender's Game (http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/08/final-enders-game-trailer/)". It's been one of my favorite books since I first read it when I was about 12. I really hope they don't screw it up too badly....
Saw Oblivion the other night... WOW! I loved it! Tom Cruise is a great actor, and Olga Kurylenko... need I say more? Great story, awesome effects, and really well presented plot.

I happen to think he's a good actor- I don't let his politics get in the way of the escapism that movies provide... otherwise I'd only have Eastwood, Willis, and Wayne films to watch... and I would like some variety now and again. It is possible to watch a movie and enjoy it, despite the actor/director/producer being aligned opposite of your own beliefs. I can forget all that shit and just watch a movie. And yes, I think he's a good actor, that's my opinion, yours can totally be different.
Evil Dead: good, bad or horrible?
Not sure what to tell you. It's a little campy. The story can't stand on it's own like The Orphanage or anything. If you kick back and watch it with some friends and some brews, it's a fun time. If you go into with high expectations and a serious face on, you'll be disappointed.

I thought I'd offer to anyone close to Pueblo with kids... I just took 8 people, only 3 over 12... (they don't charge for 12 & under) so $25.50 for 8 to see 2 movies- Despicable Me 2 and RIPD (ok, maybe 1.5 movies)

I just finished watching "Samsara", which is the successor to "Baraka". If it wasn't for the title, I'm not sure I'd know which of the two I was watching, they were essentially the exact same movie.
Okay, so watching Orange is the New Black on Netflix. It is a Netflix original series and it is great. If you have Netflix, check it out.
It's so good that it has a record 14 Emmy nominations which is more than any tv show ever in history. There is another Netflix original with Kevin Spacey that we'll probably check out as well.
If all the other premium channels would be available independently like Netflix, I'd be all over it.
Olympus Has Fallen FUCKING sucked (yes FUCKING). I hate button pushing movies. That's all it was.
A Place Beyond The Pines was one fawked uped movie.
Samara/ Baraka? Watch the Quatsi triliogy. That is where it all started.

We have one TV in the house and we mostly watch Netflix offerings through the Roku.
I watched Weeds all of the way through and now wish I could have my time returned to me. While there were bits and pieces of the story that were interesting, the story arch was improbable and seemed immature. I started watching Orange is the New Black and after three episodes I had the strange feeling that I was watching a similar spin from a different angle on the lives of white, female, drug dealers. It took me a few seconds on Google to realize that both shows were produced and written by Jenji Kohan. Born and raised in Beverly Hills and educated at Columbia University, here is a short piece that provides a little insight into Kohan - http://www.jewishjournal.com/hollywoodjew/item/jenji_kohan_smoking_the_stereotypes
Unlike Weeds, I don't think I will finish Orange... Perhaps I'm all tapped out on the paradoxical, supposedly middle class, drug lord. IMO, Breaking Bad is better written, better development of characters, and more complexity to the plot. Just my $.02, and worth exactly what you paid for it.
I just finished watching The First Grader directed by Justin Chadwick and released in 2010. The movie is currently on Netflix and being rated PG-13, I watched it with my wife and 15 year old daughter. While few movies can do true justice to real history, this movie does a noteworthy job of accurately depicting the story of Kimani N'gan'ga Maruge, an 84 year old man who spent many years in captivity while fighting for freedom from British rule over Kenya. The movie tracks the true story of how he entered elementary school at the age of 84 because of his desire to learn to read. I found the story uplifting and not overly preachy. The emphasis on learning, perseverance, and caring for others was a nice change from so much of what has become my everyday focus. This movie was well worth the hour and forty minutes it took to watch. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790663/
After watching the last episode of Orange, I can see what you mean. Listened to an interview with her and she definitely talked about liking to put people of different backgrounds together in situations where there is no room to retreat so they have to deal outside their comfort zone.
After watching Weeds, then Orange having characters who muled drugs I could see how it would feel redundant.

Now You See Me. Magician, Feds, Magic debunkers. Thought you know who it is? Guess again.
I'm really not a Hugh Jackman fan, but man, he must've drank some of Tobias Funke's acting juice. Jake Gyllenhall does a really terrific job of being a mysterious, and inexplicably nervous/offputting detective. If you pay close attention, you should be able to start connecting the dots before the 1st act is over, but you still won't crack the case until they want you to.
Very moody and dark. Give it a viewing.

I'm really glad to hear this. I was listening to some movie people who just spent time at a recent film festival and they made fun of both of Jake Gyllenhall's new movies and said they didn't like this one too much. I look forward to seeing it.

Last night I watched "Thunder Soul" on Netflix. It is more of a documentary than a movie, but it was very well done. If you're interested in the Arts, and want to hear some great funk music, give it a go. Basic premise is a group of adults after 30 years, got back together to honor their old band teacher who taught them more than just music.
I'm really glad to hear this. I was listening to some movie people who just spent time at a recent film festival and they made fun of both of Jake Gyllenhall's new movies and said they didn't like this one too much. I look forward to seeing it.
It's worth it! I loved it, I thought it was one of the best dramas I've seen in a while- but pay attention, pee before it starts, and afterward you'll be glad you saw it.
In other news- I really cannot say I loved, nor hated, the new Superman "Man of Steel." The plot was a re imagining of Superman II, with General Zod, but incorporated some new things (note: I did not ever read the comics), and just got too back-and-forth with the battles for me. Then again, I like Batman 10x more than Superman, Superman is just too impervious.

Just watched the original "Brian's Song" again. It has to be one of the finest sports movies ever produced. I've loved "The Bad News Bears", "The Express", "Remember the Titans", "We Are Marshall", "The Natural" and many others but the story of the bond between two players is something special and having the real players and real game footage in it was great.

That happens. The real question is: was it any good? I have a thing for Cameron Diaz, and once I saw the trailer I wanted to see it... unless it sucked, then I'll probably wait.
If you plan to watch bad grandpa just watch the trailer 3x. The trailer was basically the movie!

They assembled quite the cast, even for the bit parts they had big names, which had to have cost a pretty penny. Couple that with Ridley Scott directing and I think having high expectations was reasonable. In spite of that, it lacked production value, -almost like they got all those people together for a weekend in El Paso and decided to shoot a movie.

I liked Ender's Game (mostly) until the end.
The only complaint I had was a sloppy/lazy timeline (unnecessarily including information that made it seem like events that took months according to the dialog happened in 28 days). Overall it was pretty close to the book until the end. They completely left the tracks with the ending. Pissed me off to no end.
Of course I say that having loved that book since I was about 12. I don't know if anything but an HBO/Showtime mini-series could have told that story in a way that met my expectations.

It's not "Pixar great" but it has a pretty conservative/libertarian/Randian story ... basically the kid is the grandson of a great Knight ... but Knights were outlawed by his lawyer father because he died in battle and now that the lawyers are in charge, society has devolved into a bureaucratic police state. Of course an evil Knight is putting together an army to crush the country since it's been weakened by legalism and the elimination of Knighthood.
Makes the case for individual excellence and against both gun control and the bureaucratic state ... and kids will enjoy it.
So I'll be humble enough to admit, I voluntarily watched Elysium...
WOW, what a terrible, shitty movie! The action and effects were good, but holy libtardation to the max on the story line. Bottom line: the whole plot of the film is "Rich people are evil." That's pretty much it. Other than that, I kinda liked District 9 somewhat (mostly because I didn't really get the political undertones on that one), but this Bloomkampf (misspelled intentionally) film was que horrible.
Was the Elysium plot better or worse that In Time with Justin Timberlake?

You will like the book but it is a shame that so many will not get the punchline from reading. He did a great job of hiding it in the book where the movie was limited in time. There is an entire subplot the movie did not even touch on that will get you though.

Never saw In Time... Not sure if I want to either, but Elysium is hilarious how it's a criticism on the rich, celebrity, ruling class, which is exactly where Matt Damon, Neil Bloomkamp and Jodie Foster are classified. Leftist hypocritical attitudes never cease to amaze me.

After seeing trailers for this, I read the book first. The novel was simple and straight forward but kept me very engaged. I would recommend the first book to anyone from junior high on up. The movie edited so much detail form the story it seemed rushed and choppy. As for the other four books in the series they are a very different read. I'm on book four of five and will be done with his books after that.

Saw Frozen tonite ... they say its the best Disney animated movie since The Lion King ... which it is. Which means its good but not as good as Pixar or any better than Blue Sky or DreamWorks, and with way too many songs.
But it was still decent (and probably worth paying to see if you have any little Disney Princess wannabes in your house).
We watched Jack Reacher last night. I've only read the first book (Killing Floor) and it was based on One Shot. I thought it was pretty good. Lately, I really like Tom Cruise's stuff since Collateral. Very technical moves.

I just watched what I thought was a great movie. Did a search in the thread but didn't see it come up. It was called "Memorial Day" and it's on Netflix. I never saw it advertised but I'm glad I found it.
Basically it's about a guy serving in Iraq who recalls his early teen years and what he learned from his WWII-vet grandfather after finding grandpa's old army footlocker in the barn. The boy finds all sorts of mementos in the foot locker and an emotional grandpa explains how he got them. Pretty touching. Worth a watch.
The GF and I watched "Saving Mr. Banks" starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. Really good movie! It's about Walt trying to make Mary Poppins, and honestly, Paul Giamatti almost steals the whole show.

Agreed. Everything I hoped it would be.

What ridge said! Although I had a few nit picky gripes about some of the military stuff, namely the EOD HALO jump (I've yet to meet any EOD guys who are HALO trained) and of course the scene in NV where two helicopters are a few feet off the ground and there is no rotor wash. Other than that, badass movie, everything I was hoping it would be as well.

I'm watching a pretty cool documentary about Muscle Shoals called... Muscle Shoals. It's on Netflix.
Great bit of music history. Watched it last night.

I'm watching Oliver Stone's Untold History Of The United States.
Episode 4 and so far it has been honest and unbiased. Lot's of little details I didn't know about.
It starts at the beginning of WWII and moves forward. Highly recommended.

I'm sorry, I watched the first episode last night and lost even more respect for that liberal hack. Was that the untold story of the US or the Soviet Union? He downplayed our role in liberating the Pacific, turning the tide of the war in Europe on the Western Front, liberating France, and doing all of this coming out of a depression. The USSR didn't exactly win WWII, they just threw so many bodies at the Germans that they would eventually be overwhelmed. Russia didn't really use tactics and military strategy that was innovative or world changing. "Go rush at those Germans or we'll shoot you!" Can't really do much else. Jhood, you are aware that Oliver Stone is fascinated with Communism, right?

Lego Movie was entertaining ... however the ham-fisted leftard propaganda bits were annoying (badguy is "President Business" ... if they named him "President Government" the movie would be a libertarian/objectivist propaganda film instead of a leftist one).

Godzilla today.......yawn.
I got tired of all the actors and "The Stare".........
The previews were all misleading. Brian Cranston.......c'mon, he was barely in the movie. Monsters where constantly changing scale in all scenes.
Wait for something else.

I suggest watching Gojira (the original) and then watching the new US version...

+1.
Godzilla and his nemesis are well done, but I couldn't help feel I was watching a monster version of the Titanic (albeit shorter). I read that the last 1/3 of the movie was supposed to be the best; but I felt robbed. Imagine watching an Ali/Frazier fight with Days of Our Lives interjected at the 5 minute mark of a round...
The only part I thought to myself "that's cool" involved a head and radioactive fire...
If your'e looking for a Host, Cloverfield, or hell, even Pacific Rim, this is not it. Wait for DVD/Netflix.
Ronin, I appreciate your viewpoint; but a good movie needs to stand by itself, regardless of it's heritage.

Anyone want to see an early spaghetti western, with Clint's character, but no Clint?

Watched Lone Survivor on demand last night, quite good but depressing.
Took my niece to see godzilla, kind of a let down. In a two hour monster movie there was about 8 minutes of monsters.
