My wife and I enjoyed Solo, but she's a huge SW nerd/fan (has read all the books, etc) and she pointed out a few plot holes, but for the most part it apparently follows the original books.
Let me know if your marriage doesn't work out. My wife doesn't have an appreciation for anything that involves plot twists, story lines, subtle humor, super heroes, or science fiction.

Mrs BG and I watched "Game Night" last night. We both enjoyed it (surprisingly to me). It was actually very funny.

The audience was silent throughout the movie.
That’s exactly how you should be at a movie.
We saw Solo today. IMO, it wasn’t as bad as many have made it out to be. It wasn’t something I would go back to see in a theater. The plot really didn’t fill in Han’s character to make him what he seemed to become in the original movies. Just my $.02

LOL.
I wouldn't recommend holding your breath...
But the ending was terrible and made no sense.
Well, without spoilers, I can't really explain it to you. I thought it made sense.

I agree, it does make sense.
Finally got around to watching "Ready Player One".
I Really wish Hollywood would stop shoveling out dystopias worse than the one we already live in.
The movie itself was a solid "meh" which is about the best that can be expected nowadays.
Saw Mission Impossible 'Fallout'.
Very dynamic, suspenseful, a real cliffhanger. I think a few things were over done, but that's typical. Very entertaining.
The Happytime Murders.
A muppet movie that IS NOT for kids. I enjoyed it a lot.

Tom Cruise still does a lot of the stunts according to an interview.
He injured his ankle on the jump from one building to another, but jumped up and finished the scene.
He said he knew he couldn't do that again in a retake.

I despise him as a person, but I love his movies. You have to give props to someone of that age doing stunts like that himself.

"The First Purge"
The first one was mildly entertaining so I thought I'd try this on a boring night.
Holy shit, what a racially charged piece of shit. The whole movie is "the NRA and white people want to kill black people".
The hero is a black drug dealer kingpin. Just.....don't. I should have known better.

We watched Hold The Dark on Netflix. I'm honestly not sure how to review the movie. The preview makes it look like The Grey, but it isn't. The movie feels a lot closer to Wind River, with a scene from The Grey as a preview. So while not as good as Wind River, not necessarily a bad movie.
I watched it too, Irving.
Not sure the people that made it really knew what they were trying to do. It was kind of like a Rob Zombie movie had a baby with a cross between The Grey and Wind River and maybe a little Longmire tossed in for good measure. If they could have sprinkled in some superhero stuff and maybe a little comedy then they would have really had a hot mess.

I tried to watch Solo the other night. It was like watching every animated gif ever created in the 90's crammed into one small aol messenger pop up. Remember back then before you were habituated? Way too much & just because it can spin doesnt mean it should.
Or maybe I just wasnt in the correct mood.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERTS: Not sure how since I think we all know how the Apollo 11 mission went. But if you're the sensitive type and don't wanna know anything about a movie you want to see, you might not wanna read this.***
Wife and I went to see "First Man" this afternoon.
The worst movie in the history of man was "The Thin Red Line". "Pearl Harbor" was a close second.
"First Man" wasn't in the same league of bad as those two, but it almost came really close. Seriously? How do you fuck up a movie about the first moon landing? By making half the movie about Armstrong's dysfunctional family life. That's how. The Gemini and Apollo space programs are some of the greatest moments of American history complete with unprecedented (at the time) triumphs and heart-breaking disasters. The flight sequences are some of the best of any movie made about NASA and the space program. Some of the detail in the scenes really gives you a sense of how the most complicated thing man has ever done was so reliant on innocuous, seemingly insignificant pieces of metal and plastic. You'll know what I mean if you see the movie.
But it seems like they go to great lengths to try to get you into the mind of Armstrong and just fail miserably. I felt like I never knew if he was just an egotistical chump or a guy trying to put fear and personal tragedies aside while focusing on some of the most important work the world has ever seen. If I didn't know a little about the man, and hadn't grown up in Houston when all this was going on, I'd think it was the former from this movie.
Then there were a few technical details that bothered me...like clouds at 130,000 feet. Granted, for the most part they got the details right. But stuff like that is so easy that it seems way more important than it should be when they screw it up.
Looking at some online reviews this seems to be a movie that movie critics love, audiences...not so much. For me it was just a 50/50 split. I really liked half the movie and really didn't like half the movie.
I would've rather watched "The Right Stuff" or "Apollo 13" again. Much better movies even if not quite so historically, and personally, accurate (it was a really good portrayal of Armstrong's personality). That's not an endorsement of Ryan Gosling's performance, though. I thought he did a good job...not a great job.
So I'm giving it 2.5/5 Stars. Rather than pay $10 or more for a ticket, wait for Netflix. I wish I wasn't such a sucker for movies about great things Americans have accomplished. Too often I'm disappointed. My wife says it's because I'd rather just watch an accurate documentary rather than a feature movie. I think it's because Hollywood really doesn't like America. But that's just me.

I read that they decided that rather than making an "America's great!" sort of film, they'd rather do a "transcend countries and borders" nonsense. The fact that they left out the flag-planting portion of the landing enraged Buzz Aldrin, whom they snubbed to the point of practically leaving him out of the film. When I read about that, I realized that limp-wristed bitches were trying once again to rewrite history and to feed their regurgitated pap to lazy kids who would rather see the movie and take it for gospel instead of what really happened.
In that spirit, here's a hearty "F you" to those who seek to neuter American accomplishments. Enjoy this gif.

SPOILER ALERT
There's a few scenes later in to Season 3 of The Man in The High Castle where the nazi's discuss how they want to approach the new propaganda push.
They decide by erasing Every American History reference (like the left does with any resemblance to other than PC history) Statue of Liberty, Mt Rushmore etc. Today's and the future youth of the new GNR (German Nazi Reich) will grow up only knowing what the nazi's want them to know.
They're calling it Jahr Null / Year Zero - A New Beginning.
Sounds familiar to what the left has been doing for decades, only coming out more publicly since their defeat in 16 with RESIST

Pan shot!
Watched Crimes of Grindlewald and Green Book this past week. I saw Bad times at the el Royale last week. Of the three, I liked Green Book best, followed by Bad times..., and Grindlewald third. This is just my opinion and as always your opinion should vary from mine.
Since we switched from MoviePass to AMC A+, we have really stepped up our movie watching schedule. Having a theater with 24 screens near by makes it much easier to find something to watch. If it wasn't for our children sharing our Netflix account, I would have dropped it already.
Enjoy the weekend!

I thought it was pretty good. I didn't like Bullock at all. She was too old for the role, trying too hard to be younger and just came off weird bitchy rather than abnormally focused. Rhodes was really good.

Watched Bird Box. It was pretty much exactly as expected. Bullocks character felt like it could use some refinement. Was she supposed to be on the spectrum? Pretty much the same movie as that M. Knight Shyamalan movie The Happening. I felt like John Malcovich was acting below his abilities.

Two movies this weekend:
The Meg - sucked. 1/5 stars.
That's it. It was 2 hours of sucked. And I really like Jason Statham. He sucked, too. Everything about it sucked.
Mile 22 - meh. 2.5/5 stars
We finally discover where the "Russian Collusion" came from. Elite squad of gov't sanctioned killers that work for the CIA until they have to kill, then they have to "resign" from gov't service because they really aren't gov't sanctioned when they have to go to work and kill. The team is remotely monitored and supported by another team, this one lead by John Malkovich, that consists of a bunch of techno-nerds.
Wahlberg is the OCD genius head of the working team that was recruited at a young age because his parents were killed, yada, yada, yada. Seen that several times before. They probably wanted to die because he snapped a rubber-band on his wrist as part of his "therapy" and it gets ANNOYING after the first couple of hundred times we have to see close-up camera work of it, as do his long-winded rants designed to show you how quickly his genius mind works. Bulk of movie deals with (aside from Wahlberg snapping his rubber band and ranting) the team needing to move a high-value asset out of a foreign country on a very strict timeline ("We're running out of time" was another too-common theme). Predictably, and in the words of my hero, Maj Payne, "Needless to say, there was plenty opposition." Turns out there's a shocking twist which, unless you picked up the movie in the last 20 mins or so, you had pretty much nailed after the first 5 mins. So maybe "shocking" is overstating it a bit.
Lots of political innuendo designed to make you not trust the gov't, especially the current gov't. Lots of shit we've seen in lots of movies before. Ronda Rousey is one of the elite killer squad members and I sense she could've done far better had she actually been given a role to play.
So, minus about 4/5 stars for lack of original ideas and annoying quirks that are supposed to make a particular character "edgy" and intense. I'll add 1.5 stars for the action. It was pretty good and there was some good gun-handling coaching...nothing too outrageous. Not perfect, though. Good fight scenes, too. It's pretty much non-stop action in one form or another. That's the only thing that makes it watchable, really.

I don't know any of their specific tracks, that is literally the first one that shows up when you search them on Youtube (and I only know about it because I've lately become hooked on the various "hip hop fans react to heavy metal songs" channels that are springing up all over youtube wherein you watch someone with no musical taste discover actual good music, and this particular song was featured on one of them).
I find that movies with Jason Stratham made by American directors suck, and movies with him made by non-American directors are awesome.
Watched ?Bad Times at the El Royale? yesterday because it was just too cold to go outside.
I would say if you enjoy Tarantino type movies (Pulp Fiction, Hateful Eight, etc.) you might like it. It has those types of quirky characters and a story line that jumps around a bit.

Saw "The Mule" last night with my wife for date night. Meh, it was OK. Certainly not on my favorites list for Clint Eastwood. Almost no action, but I didn't expect a ton anyway. A few funny spots and a few tear jerker moments.
Clint is an old man. He ain't gonna make many more films.
Went to go see Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck It Ralph 2).

I agree. It was a sort of Tarantino like film. No real good people or evil people, just people with histories, put together in an unusual circumstance and some creative violence.
Saw Vice last night. Since the movie was written and directed by a former head writer at SNL, I should have known that it wouldn't be funny, but I was not prepared for just how unfunny, and boring a hit piece it was. I was working at the White House during much of the time when this movie took place and it was staggering just how much provably false information was in the movie. Who knew that Dick Cheney was responsible for changing the term Global Warming to Climate Change? And what a ball buster this movie makes our of Lynne Cheney. Just the Virginia house shown in the movie that the Cheney's lived in was about three times larger than their actual house. Evil rich people... It is the closest I have come to walking out of a movie in many years. I'm glad I didn't because the end credit scene, of the focus group, shows you exactly what the makers of this movie think about conservatives.
I just got back from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and I really enjoyed the movie. I thought the story was well written. True to the Spider-Man character as envisioned by Stan Lee. The animation was very good and the movie just moved along well. I will see this movie again.
I don't know what is next for us; Welcome to Marwen or The Mule. I'm sure we will get around to Aquaman but the last forty years have not been kind to the character and I have never been a big fan of DC superheros anyway.
Went to go see Ralph Breaks the Internet (Wreck It Ralph 2).

Saw ?Vice? today. I thought it might be fun, but it was blatantly lib, painting anything Republican with a real nasty brush, blaming the Right for everything bad in the entire world. Anyone with even a small amount of reasoning ability would see through it, but of course, I heard several hipsters afterwords babbling about all the things they were outraged about, taking every bit of the movie as indisputable gospel. I regret paying my money to the morons who profit from this movie. It’s clearly an attempt to conjure hate for the Right, and influence the voting sheep.

The Martian:
Saw this last night, liked it 3.5/4.0 of 5.0. I'm down with the astronaut theme/space thing anyways.... to me, there were some really thought provoking situations in that show as well as a few emotionally charged aspects. If you can get into the plot, you can feel more about it I figure? It has some conflict for sure.
Recommend.

Saw several things recently.
Finally watched Ready Player One. Much more entertaining than I thought it would be. I enjoyed it.
Also saw Alita-Battle Angel. If I was giving it stars I would maybe give it 5/5 for the CGI stuff but would have to knock that rating down a bit for the storyline. Maybe 3.5/5 overall.
Also watched Aquaman last night. Wasn?t bad for a DC flick. Better than some of the recent DC stuff I thought.
Finished the "Mars" series on Netflix. Not bad, interspersed with interviews of scientists regarding the challenges of going to Mars.

Aquaman and Captain Marvel were entertaining.
AMC A+ makes it much easier to go watch movies that I wouldn't otherwise go to the theater and watch.
I saw Captain Marvel last night. Pretty good movie. I thought the main character's acting was a little lacking, but enjoyed the story and all the 90s pop culture references and music. I thought the big fight at the end was a little meh, but loved the mid credits scene.

Went and saw the Apollo 11 documentary that's in IMAX a few days ago.
It's astoundingly good. All of the footage was shot originally on 70mm film, and as a result it's gorgeous. There's no narration, all of the audio is from sound clips that were recorded at the time.
A lot of the footage has never been seen before, and watching a Saturn V light off in IMAX is hugely impressive.
It's a fantastic reminder of what America can do when we decide to accomplish something.

We saw it in IMAX as well. It was interesting that the Chappaquiddick manslaughter case was ongoing during the flight to the moon. Ironic that one brother called for the moon mission and another brother killed a woman just before the mission. Sadly I am not confident that our nation could bring such resolve to any similar task today. There were so many people who watched that mission and made it happen. I am hopeful that private industry can make something out of orbital travel and one day we may return to space.
I was fairly surprised they mentioned Ted Kennedy's screwup at all during the movie, given that CNN's documentary section was one of the producers.
As to US spaceflight, NASA has become far too hidebound and risk averse to do anything cutting edge on the human spaceflight front. Couple that with the fact that funding for NASA is often times coupled with various politician's pet pork projects, and it's unsurprising they haven't done anything with HSF beyond the ISS.
Thankfully, private space industry is on the cusp of reinvigorating US space. SpaceX has successfully made the first test of the passenger version of Dragon 2, Elon Musk is moving incredibly fast on the development of the Starship test hopper, and Bezos and Branson have also been successfully testing flights of their vehicles to the edge of space.

This movie knows what it is, and knows why you're there. The plot and characterizations are pretty archetypal and done in broad brush strokes, and while the story is serviceable, it's obviously in service to the main reason you bought a ticket; which is to watch giant monsters pummel each other.

Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise. Don't think Kelly McGillis signed up.

Unfortunately, there's no amount of CGI that can make 62 year old Kelly McGilliss look good. She has not aged well. According to her, she's fine with all that and her current sans Hollywood life.

It's a western with Kurt Russell and a pretty solid supporting cast.
What should be a B-grade western manages to be better than it has any right to be due to some very solid dialogue and characterization.

Willow
I looked for Apocalypse Now, but they didn't have any copies in the store. Next trip perhaps.
Does Willow still hold up? I wanted to watch it with my kids, but not every old movie holds up well over time. The Thing holds up very well. Speaking of old shows, anyone watch The Dark Crystal reboot? Answer in the Netflix thread I guess.

You'd be wrong, just like how everyone thinks no one has any attention span anymore, yet somehow 3+ hour podcasts are more and more popular. Every generation since the beginning of time has always thought that future generations will be more dumb and worthless, and they are always wrong, every time.

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.
The thing that ruins the whole premise for me is they got caught by border patrol.
Right.

What is that movie coming out that is advertised as, "gives a big middle finger to rape culture!"?
Everytime I see that I'm like, Islam?
If anything, Islam (in practice, if not in theory), gives a big thumbs-up to rape culture. If you disagree with me, you'll need at least four male witnesses to prove it.
Finally got around to watching Spiderman: Far From Home
Well, I watched parts of it, but got bored about 15 minutes in when I saw the twist coming, and basically decided to spend the rest of the movie checking my phone.
If you want a more even-handed review, I would suggest this one:

You'd be wrong, just like how everyone thinks no one has any attention span anymore, yet somehow 3+ hour podcasts are more and more popular. Every generation since the beginning of time has always thought that future generations will be more dumb and worthless, and they are always wrong, every time.
Every generation thinks that, yes. My comment is primarily directed at a new contributing factor though - voice recognition tech - that heavy reliance on may lead to increased illiteracy. Reality is, literacy is far better now than it was even in the 40's and 50's, but as its once again getting easier and easier to get by being completely illiterate, that could change. At any rate, it's more directed to post whoring.
Side note: El Camino. Overall loved it, felt satisfying.
Finally watched Avengers End-Game, and the (SPOILERSPOILERSMARVEL/GIRLPOWERSPOILER) scenes effectively ruined the entire movie for me, much as it would if God himself magically appeared, flicked his fingers, fixed everything, and the movie ended. [Don't worry, that part isn't a spoiler]

I thought it was sad but a well told story. Some parts of the movie were absolutely funny.
Been waiting to see that.
Interesting.
I LOL when the kid dropped that bazooka.
I have it on good authority that the new Midway movie is evidently worth watching.

I found it long and at times slow, but afterwards I felt like all the parts were a necessity for the complete story. An excellent recounting of history with some incredible effects.
Many critics panned Midway, but the viewing audience likes it. A pivotal battle for control of the Pacific.
My daughter wants to know if there has ever been a scary movie set in a single story home. I'm sure there has been, but I can't think of one.

Thats how you can tell if a movie is worth watching ... if the critics hate it it'll be good.

It's called, the renters who turned your home in to a meth lab. Now showing in Commerce City and other major areas, near you.
Went to "Ford vs Ferrari" last night, highly recommended and well worth seeing on the big screen.

The Strangers
The Evil Dead 1 & 2
Cabin in the Woods
The original Night of the Living Dead takes place mostly in a 2 story farmhouse.

Great story but like all historical films, the writers take some license with how characters interact and create lots of made up dialogue. Historically, she was a bad ass person on a mission from God. It doesn't hurt that she was a gun totting Republican. If you like the film, read one of her biographies...or two.

Like Billy Jack! The critics hated it, the public loved it.

My buddy was quick on the draw with The Strangers, and Ithink we're watching tonight since the trailer scared the kid. Pretty sure there was a basement of sorts in the Cabin in the Woods.
Went to see "Ford vs. Ferrari", excellent movie. Highly recommend it, even if you're not a race fan.

Just got home from watching the same. Good stuff
What, nobody checked out the Charlie's Angels reboot? [Sarcasm2]

Anyone see the No Safe Spaces movie?
The (~my age) guy in the seat next to me on the flight (SFO to DEN leg) was watching some 13 year old girl flick. Seemed pretty weird to me.
I glanced a few times and it seemed like it was kinda Blair Witch perspective like at times.
I was watching Black Panther on the in flight entertainment, then it borked with about 10 minutes left.
Probably should have just saved myself the first 2 hours of agony.

Watched first 15 mins with Mrs.bo, she fidgeted til I stopped it. Not a format she likes.
It was interesting, still trying to get back to it.

I've heard about No Safe Spaces and I like Dennis Prager. I totally agree that college should be immersive and provide a vast array of different ideas.

Cabin in the Woods has the...er...tech centerish headquarters.
I couldn't deal with The Strangers because it's one of those movies where all of the suspense is derived from the protagonists being really bone headed about self defense.
That seems like most scary movies though.

Stereotypically so.

The first two episodes of The Mandalorian are great.
Kathleen Kennedy should be fired and replaced with the guys who are producing The Mandalorian.

Just knocked out my 99th and 100th 2019 horror release of the year.
Watched Fractured on Netflix, and a screener of Daniel Isn’t Real.
Fractured: eh. Like. 4.5/10. Well made but I didn’t care for it much. Frustrating character and predictable.
Daniel isn’t Real: pretty bonkers movie. Comes out next month. Really pretty good.

All time. I'm not a horror junkie, but I really appreciate good scary movies. The last recommendation I got for the scariest movie someone had ever seen was The Fourth Kind and it was so bad I could hardly watch it.

Yeah, the Fourth Kind was bad...
My all-time list is pretty trite because it is mostly just the standards:
Dawn of the Dead 1978
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Exorcist
The Thing
The Silence of the Lambs
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Aliens
Halloween
The Fly
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Honorable mention to my #s 11-12:
11: The Blackcoat's Daughter
12: Train to Busan
Cool, I'll check out 11 & 12. Thanks.
