Complex is not shutdown. A few officers are posted outside to keep the media back. Just the family is quarantined in their unit but all reports say the other units are free to come and go. However, that multiple media outlets camped nearby report seeing 3 people enter and leave patient zero's apartment during the "quarantine".

Oh yeah...they definitely have this whole situation under control. So here's my question, why in the blue hell have we not cut off all inbound travel from affected countries? Hell, why is this apartment complex not completely shut down? It doesn't seem to me that they care a whole heck of a lot about containing this thing. If they did, I would think they would be taking a LOT more precautions.

A pandemic flu virus can spread around the world in days or weeks and may be unstoppable whereas Ebola only causes sporadic localised outbreaks that can usually be stamped out.

Truly, I don't understand why officials and the media continue to say Ebola is no big deal. I have done lots of research on the virus since I read Hot Zone when it was first published and became interested in the subject. Ebola IS a big deal. EVERY published research paper I have read says it is seriously contagious. Even the CDC (who keeps telling us it’s hard to catch) keeps Ebola in their very highest containment level Bio Safety Level 4. It doesn't get higher. This is their description of the safety level from the CDC website.

BSL-4 builds upon the containment requirements of BSL-3 and is the highest level of biological safety. There are a small number of BSL-4 labs in the United States and around the world. The microbes in a BSL-4 lab are dangerous and exotic, posing a high risk of aerosol-transmitted infections. Infections caused by these microbes are frequently fatal and without treatment or vaccines. Two examples of microbes worked with in a BSL-4 laboratory include Ebola and Marburg viruses.

So if the CDC plays with Ebola in the most extremely sealed off and contained labs, wearing multiple layers of protection and positive pressure protective suits designed for viruses that pose a "high risk of aerosol-transmitted infections", why do they keep telling us it’s no big deal? That people can't catch it unless they lick an infected person. They are full of shit, that's why.

They are mishandling this situation. The officials extreme incompetence will lead to more infections. They are so singularly focused on making the public believe Ebola is a minor issue that they are actually risking more people's lives.

While I believe there is no need for the country to panic, I do whole-heartily believe they should be treating this infection with a little more pep-in-their-step.

"more pep-in-their-step" would indicate that they actually cared. I submit that they do not, in the least, care. They own the patent (along with the NIH and Bill Gates), and it's in their best $$ interest to keep this going so they can "sell" their vaccine (which is also patented). There are alphabet agencies that are already squelching (with great force) alternative treatments to this thing... Gotta love our gubment and its NGO partners.

The thing that makes me shake my head about this particular outbreak/strain, and the seemingly low level of worry. Typically ebola pops un in Africa and wipes out a village or a small cluster population and goes dormant. The death count keeps rising and this strain keeps spreading.

Typically, you contract the disease go symptomatic and die fairly quickly or survive. This strain based on what I have seen from WHO people are living longer and providing more opportunity to spread the disease. This could get really bad, before it gets any better.

We have an outbreak of a disease that was previously near-eradicated in a region with very little govt/security/ medical infrastructure and high traffic with the western world (via aid workers traveling back and forth).
We have an ISIS hard drive obtained containing plans for and research on using weaponized viruses.
We have ISIS trying to trade a hostage for Aafia Siddiqui. If you don't know who she is, Google her... key points are MIT education and conduct of research on the best candidate for a host virus for bioterrorism use (spoiler: she picked Ebola).
We have close ties between terror organizations and the people must adopt at penetrating our extremely porous southern border.
We have possible dry runs/proof of concept trials on US soil of previously successful attacks.
Not to mention these groups are getting funding from state entities with malicious intent towards us, equipment designed to produce this kind of weaponry currently unaccounted-for from the former USSR, etc. There's PLENTY more if you know where to look.
