I can't believe how he walked up, faced the two women while standing behind and to the side of the cameraman, pointed the gun for several seconds at the reporter, and neither woman noticed him. What a complete and utter coward.
This is a prime example of why I'm constantly reminding my wife to practice "situational awareness" while she's out and about.

Reporters train themselves to ignore everything outside the camera's view. Think of it as "active" condition white. Camera operators, same thing. It's all about the story and nothing else while the camera is on, ESPECIALLY for a live broadcast.
The interviewee? She was probably not used to being on camera and was incredibly nervous, with all the "perceptual narrowing" going on that we always talk about.
All in all, I'm not surprised at all that no one noticed.

YOU are the first responder. Police, fire and medical are SECOND responders.
When seconds count, the police are mere minutes away...
Gun registration is gun confiscation in slow motion.

People in lots of professions do stupid things because that's "how it's done". Maybe it's time to learn a different method. Look...I'm not saying the victims are at fault by any stretch. Just that paying attention to your surroundings is critical to personal safety.

Second vid pulled already.
I know you're not saying that the victims are at fault. Fact is, reporters are expected to look steadily into the camera and talk, not be looking around maintaining situational awareness on live TV. They wouldn't last very long as reporters if they did. This isn't a case of "how it done", it's worse, it's a case of "This is what is expected of you as a reporter". Ignoring your surroundings while reporting is required of a "good" reporter.

Ps. Your "How it's done" comment reminded me of a despair.com poster that I liked so much that I bought it and have it hanging outside my office:
