Is it seriously that difficult to keep your vehicle in proper functional order so you are NOT a target for BS tickets? The same thing goes for having valid registration, and insurance documentation in your vehicle.

People who whine about getting BS tickets are usually the same people who have valid issues with their stuff (Cracked windshield, tail lights out, outdated documentation, etc). There IS a price to being a lazy ass in maintaining your vehicle or documentation. If you don't want to be a target for these kind of tickets, then maintain your stuff properly so you are NOT a target.

It does not matter if the tickets are BS or not. There are many laws that allow the enforcement of BS tickets. That is the world we live in and that fact isn't going to change just because we don't like BS tickets. If you don't want to get shafted with a BS ticket then don't be a target for them. Or you can CHOOSE to be a target for BS tickets by not keeping your car maintained or documentation in order and take the risk on getting a ticket for valid violations of the law. If you choose to be a lazy ass and get nabbed for it, you really don't have a leg to stand on when you whine about it.

Its amazing how I have never gotten a BS ticket like this because I DO keep my vehicles properly maintained and have my documentation updated and available when requested. I have been pulled over for valid reasons, like speeding or changing lanes without a signal, several times and ended up not getting a ticket for anything. Did I deserve a ticket for the violations I performed? Hell Yes. I honestly can't tell you why I didn't get a ticket in the few instances where I didn't get one. But I think that being honest, polite and respectful to the officer regardless of the situation and having my vehicle in proper functioning order along with my documentation in proper order goes a long way in lessening my chances of being a Target for a ticket. Personally I think that a lot of the officers are looking for bigger fish to fry and simply want to see if you have outstanding warrants or crap like that when they run your info.

There are so many more important laws to enforce and serious criminals to apprehend. I usually back law enforcement, but this was a waste of taxpayer money. Shame on that Dougco deputy.

did it occur to you that maybe I don't have an extra $410 for a new windshield? (That was the safelite quote, btw)

I just found this thread while searching for something else and I thought an update was due: I got the windshield replaced yesterday. Yes, 5 April, 2016. It was only $245.35 here in CA, and that includes stupid CA taxes and a $6 "Safe Driving California" fee (I'll just leave that one alone. ). Windshield pricing in Colorado is definitely a racket.

What I was actually looking for was the political stance of Safelite - I had remembered somebody posting that Safelite was anti-gun, but searching only pulled up one of my own posts declaring that "Safelite is very anti-gun".

It's 2 years later. You never mentioned Make/Model/Year in the thread (or did I miss it somewhere?). The volume of production and availability has a lot to do with price. If you need a Chevy/GMC/Cadillac Truck windshield in CO, it'll likely cost you $150 or less with installation. If you have a vehicle with limited production and/or a number of sensors or heating in the windshield, it'll cost ya'.

Just in case you were actually curious, it is a 2014 Xterra, which has the same windshield as all Xterras going back more than a decade. No fancy windshield heaters or anything. I guess there could have been a shortage at that time.

I realize it is a year and a half later, but I do believe that there is something a little suspect about El Paso county putting down gravel on the roads in winter instead of salt, chemicals, or even just sand (like most of the Midwest does).

That's Colorado in general that "sands" its roads with gravel. Why bother screening the stuff when the motorists have to deal with it?

Just to throw out a relative number, GM sold 741,588 Chevy/GMC trucks in 2014 alone. That doesn't include the truck based SUVs.

The higher volume of manufacture tends to reduce the cost of manufacturing.

Who knows, maybe 2014 was a bad year for Xterra windshield production. Maybe they're only made every other year or something?
