How was the test drive. I remember when they first came out - you'd pretty much only see them on the side of the road. That was a long time ago now.

It had a race computer and custom exhaust. That plus a few thousand feet closer to sea level. Quite a bit more powerful than the one I had. It's the police model. Rode great, and for $6900 with 3500 miles on it,
I have Bike ADD. I literally JUST bought a BMW for the wife, and it turns out she doesn't want it. I love riding it, but it just lacks the brutality of the Buell.
and AFAIK the XB series is pretty reliable, and simple to work on.

doesn't matter with fool injection. skip the buell and buy something, once you're tired of it, it will sell easier. There's a reason, the buell is still for sale.

I had one last year and freaking loved it. comfortable, but not as comfortable as the BMW, but comfortable. There's something to be said for that old 1203cc Sportster engine, the power and riding experience is phenomenal.
There's really no other bike I can think of that can compare, I've been scanning the interwebs for something.
It's sporty, it's utilitarian, it's got handling, power, ground clearance, comfort, luggage, upright riding position. Closest thing I can imagine is the 1200GS, or maybe Triumph Tiger, but vs the buell's 400# weight and 55mpg and no super labor intensive regular maintenance...I don't know what would even come close within the price range.
My old one sold in a week.

I just got a 2013 BMW F700GS factory Low for my wife. It's their 796cc parallel twin motor by rotax I believe. The bike is very comfortable and confidence inspiring. It's just down on HP by about 40 vs the Buell.

But the guessing game is more fun!
Besides, I bet its really about a swarm of trouts that only eat bums. They wait for them to wade into the calming waters and then BAM, bite their ankles off until they collapse into the water and then eat them like a bunch of bored piranhas.

2:42.. just watched Red again. Great flick. Trout is short for Troutman, as in Colonel. It's the book that Rambo 9 will be based on. Spoiler Alert! Rambo is on the streets eating things that would make a billy goat puke and Troutman is with the CIA, CODENAME TROUT. His mission is to rehibilitate the now failed actor (BUM) and get him to make a movie worth a shit.

Briskets just went on. Come on down tomorrow afternoon. ;) I'm guessing everything should be done about the time I get back from the range tomorrow. Had my FA Uzi come in - have had it over 2 weeks and I haven't made it out to the range yet, but I'm going to fix that tomorrow. If you need a better excuse, I could sell you a few of those cases of AK ammo I have left. That way it's a "work" expense, right?

I'm jealous. I looked at buying a smoker a few years back, then looked into building one as I heard that was almost the better thing to do, then I realized it would be cheaper to buy one because I didn't have any woodworking tools and would have to buy those too. Now I just try and ignore my cravings for burnt pork ends that any good Kansas Citian should have.
I see one brand or another on craigslist a lot. I like the Weber as there is a good website and a lot of aftermarket parts, but I'm sure that's probably true of the other brands too.

Ugh, I ate way too much. ;)
Ribs were awesome.
Chopped up some of the brisket with some sauce and put it with some cole slaw on toasted bun sandwiches. That was awesome.
Had a little quarter of ham left, so I threw that on the smoker towards the end and that turned out awesome.
Plus we had corn. You can never go wrong with corn.
And I made homemade guac.
I'm not eating for several days now.
Should have taken some good pics. Grabbed this though - at least you can see a bit of it.

Man oh man, I am suddenly extremely starving after reading your update, Brian.
Maybe its time I look into getting a smoker again...
I'm going to probably spend at least an hour tomorrow slicing, vacuum packing and freezing all that stuff. The good news is it lasts for a while since I usually make at least 2 briskets at once and we never eat all that in one sitting of course, even with help. I freeze little packets of chopped up brisket in a "goo" full of semi-custom bbq with honey and spices, etc. My wife calls it crack meat.
BuffCyclist
06-03-2013, 02:17
Okay, including pictures is is just plain torture!!!!
Not a bad idea to smoke more than you need and freeze half. I really miss pork burnt ends from Jack Stack BBQ in KC, they have the best sauce I've ever tasted. And having grown up in KC, I've gone to the Great American BBQ Festival several times and tasted hundreds of bbq sauces, only to keep going back to Jack Stacks as my favorite.

I do the same with pulled pork all the time. I'll get package of butts from COSTCO that have 2 butts in it and smoke both. Then I package maybe two servings worth in small ziplocks and freeze them. Instant puled pork sandwiches until we run out.

The biggest question is: Charcoal or Electric...
Is charcoal really that much more difficult to keep going and smoke with than an electric would be?

I prefer charcoal. If you want more convenience, look at a propane smoker. Electric just seems weird to me.
When I smoke, I tend to hang around the smoker most of the time and sort of make it an event. Many brews are usually involved. So it's not hard for me to keep the fire going well.
BuffCyclist
06-03-2013, 03:18
Thats kind of what the general consensus seems to be. Hmm... will definitely have to look more into this. I've been craving bbq for years, and my dutch oven pulled pork is better than nothing, it isn't even close to being as flavorful as smoked pulled pork would be.
Now, time to convince the vegetarian fiancee that I need to spend several hundred bucks on a meat smoker... Wonder if you can smoke tofu. That could be a selling point for her [LOL]
GilpinGuy
06-03-2013, 03:43

Although eating that much soy product isn't the best thing for your body, you can "cook" tofu pretty much the same way you cook any other meat. On the stove, on the grill, whatever. The only difference is that you don't actually cook it. It's all just for flavor.

I know all about veggie diets, gluten free diets, etc. Mrs HoneyBadger has been dealing with a very sensitive stomach for about 6 years. We were never able to get an official diagnosis from the doc, but for a while he symptoms looked very similar to celiac disease. Makes it hard for me to cook for the both of us sometimes because I have a cast iron stomach and will eat just about anything, especially if it mooed or oinked.

How long will you be on days? What sort of rotation do you follow?
I work two, four night shifts per month. So, only really 8 nights per month but in the winter those nights end up being 16-17 hrs. Right now, the nights are only about 12hrs long, so they're a piece of cake.
Sunday was my last night of a 5 night shift that I had to work because too many people requested off for Memorial Day, so we had some gaps in the schedule that had to be filled.
I start my next shift this coming Sunday, though normally I have at least 7 days, up to 10-12 days between shifts.
BuffCyclist
06-03-2013, 23:40
And I agree with the internal clock never getting used to the changes. Most nights I can't fall asleep until midnight and get up around 8am when my Fiancee goes to work. A few coworkers though stay on night shifts, they go to bed around 3-4am and wake up around noon. Then again, those coworkers are married to each other, so that makes it easier for them to stay on the same schedule.

+1 to this.
I'm sure the elec and propane smokers are good, but it's just not the same thing. Personally I love the way the neighborhood (and my clothes, etc) smell with charcoal. Might be a turn-off for some, and I would guess the electric or propane smokers (probably the pellet smokers too) would cut down on that.
Only challenge I had when getting set up the first time was adjusting to the (lack of) oxygen here. Had to find the right balance of open vents to hit the sweet spot.

Yeah, I'm in a new neighborhood, so there is construction all around me. Sure makes it hard to sleep during the day...
BuffCyclist
06-03-2013, 23:47
Construction definitely sucks. I had to get blackout curtains years ago because I couldn't sleep during the day. I also started taking melatonin supplements, not out of necessity, but I found they helped me transition as my body would get the artificial melatonin when I was forcing myself back to a day schedule, and only for 2 days at most. Then I'd be back on a day schedule and wouldn't have any problems falling asleep.

I did that in the Mil in Germany in the 80's when we were under staffed, hated it. When fully staffed it was 12 hour shifts, 4 on days, 4 off, 4 on nights, 4 off, etc. Loved it.

What's the best (ie safest/professional) skydiving place in CO? Is Mile-Hi Skydiving good? http://www.mile-hi-skydiving.com/index.php
I'm thinking of making my first jump (tandem, obviously). The $200 seems fair to me, especially if I'm paying for safe equipment. And I don't plan to do this multiple times, so the buy-once-live-on of $200 is A-OK.

Rough morning. Computer failure and a co worker demanding to know how long it will take every 5 minutes. Then I get chewed out for telling him to leave me alone so I can do my job.
At the end of it, it took an hour for a 5 minute operation.
Lessons:
1. Be courteous to coworkers even when they are annoying you.
2. When someone asks how long something will take and you have no idea, make something up that will keep them at bay for a long time. Being honest with them only has them calling every 5 minutes saying "what's going on?"
Glad to hear the wife is OK.

That kind of sounds like my job. I work on the computers that we use to control satellites. They are highly specialized computers and I troubleshoot hardware and a little bit on the software side. If I screw things up, there is kind of a lot at stake... [hammer]

Painful stuff there. Stay away from greasy foods, anything with fat in it; dairy, etc. Took my (at the time) fill in POS doctor (I use the term loosely) 6 months to diagnose my pain. My wife is the one who pushed for an ultrasound on my gall bladder.

Interesting. Do you like it?
Sorry, I missed this.
Yes and no.
The requirements are constantly changing, which I don't like.
The pay is good, which I like.
I work alongside someone who does less work, has less education, and gets double pay, (the directional driller) which takes some of the wind out of it for me.
Pretty often the entire operation can be waiting on you, which can be stressful.
Most of the time though, we are watching TV.

Do your best to estimate how long it may take given the worst case outcome, double it and add 50% and tell them that's how long it will be.
When you come in under the wire, you look like a hero.
Any time someone stands over me and asks how long something will take to fix, my initial response is, "Longer if you ask me every 5 minutes or stand there and watch me. Please find something else to do and I will let you know the moment it is resolved."
"What's wrong?"
"I don't yet know the answer, but it will be the last thing I check, now go away and let me continue looking."

that's pretty much what I told him the second time he called.
I can't give a worst case because they would panic. Worst case was lose 12 hours of data, take 18 hours to reacquire it, 1 day in there to get a new surface unit shipped in and hooked up, restore the data I have. I can't go around telling them it'll take 4 days to fix, and still look like a hero when I've got it going again in 55 minutes.
"I just had a computer crash I'll let you know as soon as it's fixed " was my first call
"I don't know yet, I'll call you. The longer I spend on the phone the longer this will take." was my second answer.
"leave me alone and let me do my job" was my third answer.
"look, the more you call me, the longer this will take, I do not know how long this will take" "What am I doing?, right now I'm opening a database, loading the data, clicking on the data, scrolling through it to verify( hear him hand the phone to the Lead, "see if you can talk to this guy") (asks how long it will take) " It could take 5 minutes, it could take an hour, I don;t know yet" (so you're saying you don't know....). "YES!, you wanna come hold my hand while I do this?"

I thought that answer of "double plus 50%" was only the answer you gave to the wife when she asks about a project. And the money aspect of it is twice as much as it'll really cost, yet half as much as a contractor would quote. [LOL]

^^ Haha, nice catch!
I used to listen to White Roof Radio, it was a podcast about mini coopers. They have a huge following, and the episodes were actually very interesting. I used to listen to them while driving to work. They had some write in sections where you could send in questions that you've had with your mini, and they'd get a mechanic from detroit who was big in the mini industry answer the questions. I learned quite a bit about the mini and things to look for, which I wouldn't have found otherwise.
Only stopped listening to it because something got screwed up in the auto-download and when I tried to re-subscribe to it, I couldn't get it again unless i downloaded it from their website. They're at 450 somethng episodes now, 1 hour per week...thats a long time to do a podcast!
Whats funnier, is sometimes they'd all be drunk while doing the podcast, and you could occasionally hear them clinking the ice in their scotch glasses or talking about what they were drinking [LOL]

What's this "legit" bull crap? I am a Night Person. Just because I'm normally up all night doesn't mean I'm not "legit". I do not suffer from insomnia. I just sleep better during the day than I do at night. I just did some internet research on it. The last time I talked to a sleep doctor was in the late 70's and he told me that my normal is abnormal and Live With It. I just found out that in the mid 1980's being a Night Owl has been officially recognized a Disorder and can be a Disability. I have been this way all my life. Even as kid I was a Night Owl. My Dad was a Night Person too.
I retired four years ago yesterday after working 22 years of rotating shifts. I thrived on swing and graveyard shift. The 7 days a month that I had to work day shift was miserable.
I stop in and lurk around here frequently but I not sure if I'm part of the "Night Crew" because I'm not working.

But what came first? The insomnia, the daysleeping or the night working?
I could see the insomnia first, causing you to sleep during the day, which could have gotten you fired from you day job, and force you to get a night job and work nights.
General, intractable insomnia at all hours around the clock. So I started working nights, because it's more pay and less stress. Which turned me into a daysleeper.
And the chicken came first

In before the stroke of midnight.

What is worse so far, The british or the 2yr?
Well, the Kiddo is still asleep so I'd say the Brits. The French haven't had a mention yet. If they did, they got my vote.
Got bored with the military channel. Watching Anthony Bourdain.

BTW, anyone have any idea how to buy coveralls?
I SUCK at it. I now have 3 sets of fire resistant ones that have shrunk to stupidity, and one set that's STILL gigantic.
These fit PERFECTLY when I got them, I've washed them in nothing but cold, and now I can hardly breathe, and certainly can't pick my arms up over my head.

Did you put them in the dryer or hang them to dry? The dryer seems to the worst enemy for us.

I can't stand hung dry clothes anyway. I would avoid wearing jeans as long as possible when my mom hung them out.
I've got 5 pair at $120 each and they're all wrong.
Maybe next time I'll get it right. I'm never prepared with which size i need when they're handing them out.

Wish i could help but hang dry is the only way to make them end up the same size time after time. Maybe change to something that has no cotton what so ever?

I don't get a choice of what I get.
I'm washing them on the rig location, and they have to be dry for my next shift, I hung them up once last week and had to work with the wet ass.
I'll memorize the size I think I'll need so next time I get a pair that fits after I wash it.

It's cooler at night.
i just finished changing the cabin air filter in my car. It's a Hyundai Accent. I figured it would be a lot easier if I wasn't sweating my tail off in the sun. I changed it last October but it definitely need changing.
