What a tease.....
Ugh....just got home from work...just a temp member of the night crew until I regain my day-ho status
Too bad you guys aren't closer. I have 2 suppressed 357 levers. ;)
He's talking about a .45-70. Although a suppressed .357 sounds fun.
Yes GG, we gots to get together.

How did that shit go?
This is my "transition" night. Last 2 days I went in at 5am. Now I go in at 8pm the next 2 days. Kind of like a night off, but not really. I really like this schedule though.
Does HB like his new sched. or does he not give a shit? LOL
I thought it went pretty darn good...till I got an infection and they had to cut me open again! All that netted was a couple more weeks off of work. Going back on Monday!
2nd night job this week.

Have to monitor customer data to find a data loss issue on a wireless network. I brought my RCBS Rock chucker, 9mm brass, depriming die, and a bucket up to the office... At least I will get something accomplished.
The desk is a wreck, I'm sorry...

No shit. IF you have something mechanical that needs constant repairs. Drop the coin on better tools OR rent them from one of the auto parts places. break their stuff.
I just have a bad habit of using ratchets as breaker bars, especially frustrating since I bought a breaker bar the last time I broke a ratchet using it the wrong way. Then when I went to use a back up ratchet I had in my car tool kit, that was already broken but I never knew since I never used it. Glad I didn't find out on the side of the road.

Yikes!!
Igh, I shouldn't be up this late when I have to work the day shift tomorrow...
This should be my last night for a few months.
Moving off this project for the rest of 2016.
Crickets.
First night shift in the old/new project.
Doing 3 a week for a few weeks, Mon-Wed 2200-0500 - but probably not the full window.
Tough first night.
Off to rest for a few hours.
Early night.
6 of 20 "things" completed without error. Someone else's problem. Makes for a short shift for me.
The 2 here, 3 there hours of sleep so far this week is already taking a toll.
Trifecta.
More issues tonight. This client's environment really is shit.
The saving grace is I'm doing cleanup of the old stuff that's been/being migrated to new stuff.
Sadly, they will likely have that messed up inside of 18 months.

Those 2-3 hour windows are tough...you never quite wake up! I just rolled into days after 4 nights, and will hit 3 nights next week. Stay safe and get some rest if you can!
It's 4am, just checked into my hotel after an 8 hour drive. Have to be on a roof at 9am. When I got here, no one was at the front desk to let me in. The sign said they'd be back in under 5 minutes. It's about 23 degrees and I stood in the air lock, in a t-shirt, for almost 5 minutes before I thought to look up the number for the front desk and just call. Lady answers, I tell her in trying to check in, and she says, 'check-in isn't until 2pm today. There are no rooms available." I said, "I've got a confirmation number and you wouldn't have given one to my company if you didn't have a room, can we please check?" She agrees and comes down to meet me. She asks my name, I tell her mine and my company name and she says, "oohhhhh, you're finally here, you're late."
So I got my room amd I noticed at least two rooms in the way to mine with doors propped open. No one is wandering around for ice, so I hope those people didn't just forget. Someone must be up though, because I smell fresh bacon.
Dang Stu, try to get some rest so you aren't all woozy up on the roof. I just got home from work. Mixing a margarita now.

Yeah, that's what I do in order to get good time with my kiddos. After a night shift, I usually sleep 7-10, and then 12-4. If that doesn't work out, then I'll take another nap between 6-8pm.

If I take a supplement - 2.5mg melatonin, or half of an ambien (2.5mg) it's hit or miss, and then often groggy when I awake.

Yeah, I've gotten better at taking naps, but it's still a struggle. I have to be REALLY tired to be able to nap, and even then, I still have blackout curtains that seal all around so the room is very dark along with a loud white noise generator (Lectric Fan from Amazon). If I'm looking to sleep more than 4 hours, I'll take one of the Costco brand "Sleep Aid" pills and it seems to help without leaving me groggy and foggy for the next 18 hours like benedryl, melatonin, or any other sleep aids do.

My wife works nights so our room is setup for vampires with blackout cellular shades inside the window frames and heavy curtains. I've just always had trouble falling asleep. No issues staying asleep at night, but the odd sleep patterns of the nightwork, which isn't always consistently the same hours. really messes with me.
Welp,
Back at it again tonight.
Sad thing is, I probably could have completed my failed Monday night work by making a few insignificant changes to the script input files. However, I wanted to make a point with the client.

I feel your pain- I'm on a modified shift while we replace the camera system at the Courthouse... turns out the previous install from 10 years or so ago was complete shite, so now the new install is gonna go very late tonight. Luckily I get paid to do almost nothing except help where needed like monitoring the cameras that go down and what not.
Catching 4:00 from the back side.
Good night all![rockon]
Yawn.
Back at another week's worth of half nights+ half days.
Worked all day.
2300-0400 scheduled, sleep a few maybe, then back at it (some) mornings, some afternoons.
Crazy sh*t.
Last night went long but I did get solid 6 sleep until noon.
Tiny but seemingly effective nap tonight before starting up again. Eating a little something before laying down seems to help a bit.
Things are (knock on wood) actually running mostly OK for now, I may be done early (jinx!).
I have a few things I know will not go perfectly right, but only 2 out of 14 should need extra hand holding tonight. Stability in the production environment is usually a little better than the DR/secondary/tertiary sites at this client.
Dear diary...
damn, this is getting old quick.
well, no more nights the remainder of this week anyway.
Well that was fun.
I forgot about another gig tonight (last night).
2000-0230 wasn't too bad.
Little more to do Saturday night...
Next week is gonna suck, all nights M-F and a DR appt one morning that I have to fast 12 hours before, so nothing to snack that evening before work and no cream in my coffee.

Not a bad night here for St. Patrick's Day. Not as many drunks to boot out as a normal Friday, which is weird.
I'll be working nights for as long as I stay in my current position. It's just the nature of it, we manage maintenance work on fiber optic cables and it can only be done between midnight and 6am local time, coast to coast.
Odd week, this one.
Long night tonight, then day work for a few days, then nights again Thu-Fri, but short shift.
This project is over end of March unless the client holds some of us over. Bittersweet.
Then I'll be scrambling for enough work again for Q2. With the pipeline the way it's looking now, it's going to be tough to make it through this year.
Short night tonight.
Two left, Monday and Tuesday. Then the project is over and I'll be trying to ramp up on a few oddball gigs.

Yes, it's called Iron Mountain and it's awesome. We went there once already. It's more of a spa-like atmosphere rather than the amusement park atmosphere of the other big pool.
Iron Mountain has 10 or 12 smaller pools (more like big hot tubs) that are different temperatures. There's an age limit too. I think 12 yo for those pools. There is a "family" area off to the side as well for the little ones.
And I like that you can come and go all day. So if you want to leave and get lunch somewhere you can go back at no extra cost.
I highly recommend it.
Last "night" shift for the foreseeable future unless I get jammed up on an emergency. In that case, it's unlikely I'm posting unless twiddling waiting for a support callback.

Driving counts as working right?
Grant H.
04-07-2017, 00:52
Depends on why you are driving...
I shouldn't be up, since I have work at 6 in the morning, but the Beaglebone Black is not going to win this round... It will run Machinekit and drive my desktop CNC dremel holder. Once that's done, it's on to building the CNC router...
I'm driving home, and not getting paid for it. Nothing like working a ten hour day, then topping it off with an 8-hour drive. It's like a workathalon.

You guys should automate that...
You guys should automate that...
Yeah, that would be awesome.
It's kind of a special circumstance. We seem to have a leak so the powers that be want the pressure reduced until it can be fixed in the morning. It's a line feeding a large power plant so the flow is constantly changing depending on the load at the power plant. I kind of have to constantly monitor the pressure. If it goes up I have to pinch the valve back and if it starts dropping I have to open it up a bit.
This kind of monkey work normally isn't part of my job description but we have three guys out on vacation this week so we're kind of short handed.
I'm basically working throughout the night babysitting this thing and I'll just take the day off tomorrow when I should be working my normal shift. I have some errands to run tomorrow anyways so this will just make it easier.
I think I just saw a chupacabra.

Things get out of hand when my wife is out of town... Moved my desk and bench to the basement today, ran a regular cat6e and a pair fibers. Now I get to start building my 10gbps network...
Why 10gbps? Meh, cause I can. How else do you learn? Just do it! I have extra fiber and connectors from a work project, and Chelsio SFP+ PCIE cards are cheap enough to play around. It'll start as a network between my Linux Server, NAS, and Windows desktop. They are all getting 2 port cards, and I'll use the Linux server as the "switch" for now, and then if I decide to grow this at all, I'll add a UBNT ES-16-XG as the SFP+ switch.
