Me too. NOT! [LOL]
This shift was a half-shift for some reason, only 2 nights on. I only have about an hour to go before I can go home so time to go grab some more coffee to ensure I make it through the rest of the night, and can drive home safely.

Covering 3rd tonight made me realize how much I miss it.

This shift isn't bad... Have done it for 3 years now but with a newborn at home and just my wife I feel bad... Well kinda bad :-) my weekends suck though! Try to get on a normal day to sleep with the wife and when the kid doesn't like sleeping yours truly is the one getting up with him... He's actually 3 months old yesterday and he actually slept for 7 hours straight! I would lie if I said it wasn't amazing to sleep in :-)
on that note 3 and 1/2 hours to go and it's time to start working out.... Wish me luck it's day 1 but must be done!

Know the feeling, I was on 3rd for 4 years before moving to 1st. It was always hell come Sundays when I had to basically stay up the 24 hrs to get my sleep schedule adjusted.

Hey! My son is 3 months next week! Most nights he sleeps through the night now, but sometimes he still has a bad night and insists on waking up several times throughout the night.

I work shifts too, but my schedule is erratic. I work 4 nights on and between 5-14 days off, sometimes more. My last shift is 7/19-21, then I'm off until 8/30. :D

Haha, they have to take the telescope apart in the summer to clean the optics (primary and secondary mirrors) as well as do preventative maintenance on various systems. Takes about 4 weeks in total to take it apart, and either clean the mirrors or ship them to AZ, then the wait for other work to be completed, then reassembling the entire thing.
Whats funny though, is the box of "random parts" that we ALWAYS end up with every year at the end of shutdown. Its countless nuts/bolts, and sometimes other more unique parts as well.

Out doing driver observations tonight. Basically spying on them. I've never been caught yet. Amazing how they don't pay attention to their surroundings while making deliveries.
I was destined for another long night, but fuck it, I'm done. Besides, I need some sleep before going to the range tomorrow. One last DOPE run before chasing some Elks around the woods.
I'm already tired and it's only approaching 0100. I'm having a hard time getting used to nights.

I've been at this fucked up software troubleshooting/re-install for 14 hours.
Company hired a sub to do something we don't do a lot of and didn't have time for. I thought they were going to sub back to IBM, but they went cheap on us.
Well, the consultant fawked it up right good. So now the old adage applies very well.
Had we taken the time to do it right ourselves the first time, we wouldn't have had to do it over.
To make matters worse, there's so many moving parts, it actually took the better part of 6 hours just to uninstall and get things cleaned up to the point I could start the install over.
Gawd I hate Tivoli shit.

Welp, I got into graduate school. Unfortunately, it's the one that doesn't make me jump through a whole bunch of loops pre-admission credits wise, and it'll cost 5x as much (I'll have to pay a substantially higher rent than I do now, and it's twice as expensive as the school I want to go to). It's probably a better school, too : \

Hello Great-Kazoo,
I just noticed your comment about using violence properly. It reminded me of a maybe apocryphal exchange between a couple great science fiction writers.
Isaac Asimov told Jerry Pournelle That 'Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent". Pournelle replied "Only the incompetent wait until the last refuge to use it."
I'll now again quote a line for night people-
"I'd like to remind you at four in the morning my world is very still
The air is fresh under diamond skies, makes me glad to be alive" Bachman Turner Overdrive Blue Collar
Well, maybe no "diamond skies" tonight. But is quiet and peaceful right now.
And another thought- Snowflakes are raindrops with deployed parachutes.

I needed to run an open source storage monitor product that uses lots of oddball packages, and to get to the storage, Cisco Anyconnect VPN via commandline. fun fun fun.

This is just for "fun" on my personal NAS. I want to be able to host a few things, and as such am setting up the web server on the one box that is ALWAYS running at my house. I could just cheat and use my router, since it has DDNS implemented by ASUS, and has the ability to serve from a usb hard drive plugged in. I'd rather it be done on my NAS for space (11.7TB usable, fully backed up), but if this doesn't start to cooperate, I might just go with the router option.
I know VM is useful, crap, I use them all the time for instances of polling engines, but I really dislike having to set them up all the time. I'd rather fight with the FreeNas implementation of Linux than a VM right now.

Got the server to run and stay stable finally. Started with a simple default page, and now I have to build the pages that I want to have public for the hosted content.
Not as late as I was expecting, but not as simple as I hoped.

The weekend begins in less than an hour. Oh yeah.
Guess I never noticed a "night crew" thread before. I work nights, deep nights! 8:30pm to 6:30am, four nights a week. We manage maintenance work and splicing on fiber optic cables nationwide, which can only be done at night, not a day job at my end of the stick, maybe years down the road.

Not to bring on the pity party here since I actually made my schedule myself, but I go in at 5AM two days a week and get off at 5AM two days a week. Talk about f-ed up. Sleep is a "get it when you can" thing.
It works out for the family though. Better this than the $700 a month we were paying for babysitters. Plus, the Night Crew thread![Beer]

I work from 0600-1400 for 2 days, then from 1400-2200 for 2 days, then 2200-0600 for 2 days. Then I get 4 days off, but I usually spend most of my time off just trying to get back on a normal schedule. Oh well. I guess I'll sleep lots when I'm dead. [zombie1]

Aside from the misspelling of "whole" [facepalm] (stuff happens when you've been on the road all week, and then up till 4:30) that seems like English to me.... [Neene1]
SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. Basically we build wireless communication networks that allow our customers (Oil and Gas, Water/Waste Water, Electric Power, etc) to see what all their devices are doing in the field remotely. These are generally poll/response systems, and have the ability to remote start/stop on command, and usually have the logic to emergency stop a process when something is out of whack.
In the case of this customer we are quoting and building a high speed wireless backbone ring (data can get routed either way, so even if a link goes down, the data can get back still) throughout their field, and then we are breaking off with much slower radios to go out to their end devices. Also on the main backbone towers we will have wifi access points for their field guys to get onto the corporate network from the field. With the access points we will put up, and the truck wifi kits that we usually sell to go with it, they can be up to 10 miles from the towers and still get good wifi access.
Sorry for the book, just thought I would share.
So these are all time shared links right? So what modulation and baud rates do you utilize ?
Grant H.
05-01-2016, 16:03
So these are all time shared links right? So what modulation and baud rates do you utilize ?
For the backbone links we are using one of three bands depending on the situation. 5.8GHz, 11GHz, or 24GHz microwave shots, ranging anywhere between 16-2048QAM modulation rates. The 5.8GHz and 24GHz are license free, but the 11GHz is licensed. Depending on the customers preference, there are a host of options for this. I haven't found a need for one suppliers 4096QAM, nor a customer that wants to spend for it.
The last mile communication links are all Xetawave 900MHz unlicensed radios running multispeed multipoint, with an allowed range of 884kbps - 2651kbps (BPSK, QPSK, and 8PSK). We used to use FreeWave radios, but have since moved away from them.
This end users devices are a mix of Totalflow's, ROC's, and a few small name PLC/well controllers. Other customers have Allen Bradley, Bristol, Siemens, Ferguson, PCS, etc... (We see a lot of random gear due to being in so many vertical markets. We focus on being the experts on the wireless side and work/partner with people that know the PLC/RTU side better, if no one wants to partner we can do most of it, but it's not our forte. This brings a much better solution to the end user.)
Generally for serial devices in the field (old PLC's/RTU's/Flow computers), we run them at the max serial baud rate they are capable of. A few fields we have radios in still have devices that are limited to 1200bps. With RS485, we generally run 19200-38400, depending on the radio link (the better the link the faster we'll run). With RS232, if we have a full complement of control lines available on the device (they are all there on the radio), we'll run 115200.

With the crap gun legislation signed recently, yes I am glad. That, and we've come to terms with the fact that we need to be looking for somewhere cheaper than CO, not more expensive. If my wife can handle the heat, we are looking closely at Phoenix. Close enough to CA to be able to visit family, but cheaper.
