If you're going to spend the money, go Service Grade. Don't worry about the specific rifle you'll be getting. Anything at those prices will give you far more value than buying on the private market. Look at the auction sites and compare. $750 for a serviceable M1 is a steal!

If for some reason you hate what you get, you can always sell/trade on the CMP forum. Keep in mind all of these rifles are collectible to some degree and all are special.

Well, my birthday budget just got reallocated to medical bills. It's amazing how "life" will change your priorities once you come up with a plan. I'll have to keep my eyes open for maybe later this year or next.

Life happens!

I don't think the CMP is in danger of selling out on this latest batch any time soon. There was a bit of panic in 2016 were I think a lot of folks rushed to get what M1s they had.

And then there was the M1 Carbine lottery.

If the CMP releases the M1911A1s this year, all focus will be on that. I wonder if they'll do a lottery again. Was a lot of work and frustration and more than a few complaints.

they've already said the 1911s will be a lottery style. They'll take some number of orders (without payment I think), then randomly assign numbers to each one, and process them in that order.

I missed the m1 carbine lottery, so not sure if that was done the same way.

That's how they said things would be done with the M1 Carbines. They set a deadline to have a completed package at CMP with everything completed. I paid $24 (IIRC) to get my packet there in time. Then they (allegedly) took a USPS delivery the next day after their deadline so folks were upset because the odds of being drawn decreased from 2/5 to 1/4.

I had the CC payment method filed in because I didn't want a check out there that might not get cashed which was smart. My card was never charged. I also had a donation on the payment form that was never charged so I don't think they even opened my envelope.

What they really ought to do is the lottery online with a reservation number. If you win the lottery then go to the trouble of getting your packet together and print your reservation email. That way they aren't swamped with paperwork.

I love the CMP but they don't seem to be too organized at times.

I will be trying for the 1911, keeping an eye on the CMP website and I get regular updates from them. I have copies of all of the required ID and a notary ready to stamp my paperwork when the time comes. I will send it out via USPS priority mail same as last time. I hope that I will get one for the little collection.

M1 carbine sales went on for months as they went thru different manufacturers. There was no need to run to the mailbox to get one.

They are our rifles. Turkey was the other place they are coming back from. So expect them to never be fired and only dropped once.

I have several rifles used by the Turks, and spent some time in Turkey with the USAF. To call the Turk rifles I have "well used" is an understatement. The Turks don't use anything gently, and always thoroughly. They still fly F-4s, for example. They're also not the sort to drop their guns and run; the Turkish conscripts ("Askares") would almost certainly be shot by the NCOs if they did such a thing. I would expect the Turk return M1s to be well used, at best.

The CMP had to pay over $1,000,000 to have the stocks termite treated, and about $1,500,000 to have them cleaned of asbestos residue. Then the CMP had to pay $3,200,000 to ship them back to the US.
