I binge watched awhile ago. Pretty damn funny show !!!

Monday, Dr. Who

Sadly it'll likely be the last episode I ever watch since mediocre Doctor Peter Capaldi is about to be replaced by Nurse Who in a flurry of BBC PC BS ... she'll probably end up in a lesbian love affair with Missy before all is said and done.

I'm hoping she brings some of the energy and anger she showed in the last season of Broadchurch. If not then yeah, last seasons PC shit was beyond necessary.

I came in here to see if anyone was watching "Dark" on Netflix. I thought The Grey mentioned it, but maybe that was"Mist."

Anyway, I'm really digging the show. It makes me feel the way that Black Mirror did for the first few episodes (before you figure out the rythm of the show), but all one story.

I will warn everyone though, while the show is well done, it's originally Herman and the dubbing is terrible. Fortunately the show is good enough that most of the time you aren't paying attention to the dubbing.

I tried "Dark"...but the horrific dubbing and the s-l-o-w broody quality that tends to accompany German shows got to me within 20 minutes. I just couldn't handle it.

Completely understand. While I'm a stranger to authentic German stuff, I know just what you're talking about. I think if you can make it to episode 3 then you'll probably be committed, but easy to bail before then.

I don't want to ruin it for others, but the thing that makes the dubbing so bad, is that it sounds like it's only done by one male, and one female. It's like listening to a book on tape.

Finished up Dark. I really liked it, but I can see how many people wouldn't. The end didn't necessarily wrap up cleanly, which I guess leaves it open for a second season, but I hope not.

Reviewers never seem to like the Cloverfield movies. Or JJ Abrams movies in general. This one was a bit more formulaic than the other two, but still really delivered, in my opinion. Some of the scenes that help the movie overall don't help the tension or mood they are trying to set in the primary story, which hurts it a bit.

Does one need to watch Cloverfield prior to watching this. Or can one watch it w/out being lost?

Without Spoilers

If you've seen the first Cloverfield, there are a few scenes that have a similar mood and there is a payoff at the end. If you haven't seen it, those parts seem a bit more horror film and while they still add to the dread, it won't have the same level of resonance with the viewer.

Ridge
02-06-2018, 07:01
Thinking some more about it last night, it's pretty clear that it was just a script that JJ Abrams bought and tacked a few Cloverfield elements on to. The script was originally called "The God Particle"

There are 3 or 4 scenes that feature Cloverfield elements, and the rest of the film survives completely independent of them.

Finished watching the Punisher.

I struggle with Jon Bernthal. His characters just strike me as unlikable, and I can't decide if it is the character or just him. He always plays the same basic character in each film. I liked him somewhat better in Wind River (v. good movie!).

I started Punisher and got to about the 3rd or 4th episode where he has the big battle in the woods at his buddy's off grid home. They make such a huge deal about his honorable ways and respect for other servicemen, then proceeds to blow away a bunch of guys sent by the government. Because they didn't develop the characters of the hit group, it isn't clear if they are blackwater type contractors or actual servicemen following the orders of a crooked boss. I saw no obvious reason they weren't the same exact situation as the Bernthal character, misused and misled by a higher up with bad intentions. Just haven't gone back to the show to see where it goes from there. Maybe someone can help me around this sticky concept on this one.

The wife suggested watching Solomon Kane. It was OK. Maybe The Following has poisoned me on James Purefoy. He was great in that one, and that same character works for him in Altered Carbon, but he just didn't fit the Solomon character well. Worth a watch.

You over thought The Punisher. He was going against "shadowy" orgs who were responsible for his family's death. Which as usual were off book ops. Remember he was good at killing, killing his family was not the best plan.

I'm sure it's been mentioned on here, but I just started watching "Z Nation", a Syfy original, and so far it's not bad, granted I'm only 10 episodes through the first season, but I'll continue watching. It's a bit cheesier than TWD, but so far doesn't seem to have nearly the "soap opera" theme going. I like that they are constantly on the move, and allow the viewer to have a change of scenery, but where they started, compared to where they are as of E10 S1, and where their destination is, has me wondering.

At any rate, it's been a good distraction while logging miles on the treadmill, and easily allows me to get at least 4 miles per episode, which is otherwise mentally painful on the treadmill.

Okay, we're rationing our binge-watching so that we don;t exclude our 'other' shows to the point that we can't recall which episode we watched last. Thus far, Jessica Jones, season two is really, REALLY good. We're about four or five episodes into it.

We're also watching the second season of Penny Dreadful, which has a LOT more creepy cinematography than I had expected. It's also really good, and is working on solidifying many characters' personalities. We like it a great deal.

We're rationing Altered Carbon. Each episode is better than the previous one.

We began truly watching "Electric Dreams," which is a little like Black Mirror, I suppose. Each episode is self-contained and unrelated to the others.
Then we ran into a real disappointing, confusing stinker of an episode and I just can't bring myself to watch any more.

Sneaky Pete actually looks promising; we may give that a shot.

I stalled out midway through The Man in the High Castle....it was very, very good, but very, very...depressing? Haunting? I don't know what the proper terminology might be, save that I am reluctant to continue the show. It's too realistic.

TWD was a GREAT series at the outset. Close enough to the pulp that you could follow and not facepalm often enough to turn it off. Give and take for artistic license, format considerations, storyline flow, etc., etc., etc.

Problem is, it went all M*A*S*H on us.
It's hard to develop and deliver consistent, long term, quality story lines to keep your viewers/followers interested. A lot of people end up watching out of habit.
Writers, or whoever , started to believe it was more important than it was. They couldn't resist having that many viewers/followers and not skew the story lines to address issues and causes they want to give a voice to.

Or maybe sometimes writers just get tired, lazy, and/or bored. And sometimes the actors get involved in various aspects of writing and production, and try to showcase themselves, or their ideals/causes.

I'll admit it. I really didn't care for the some of the later MASH episodes when they got a bit to esoteric and "feely".

I kind of felt like TWD was headed that way, and stopped watching - cold turkey.

Again, just my opinion, and YMMV.

Carry on.

I watched TWD religiously until halfway through the Governor story arc, I couldn't go any further and gave it up. I got bored and started watching again but, again, gave up. I haven't seen an episode since the midseason finale with the trash hill folk. Of the episodes I've seen, only season one is worth watching. Fear the Walking Dead is even more horrible, it has all of the negatives of TWD but with even fewer positives. The problem is that none of the characters are likeable.

At this point, I'll wait for TWD to finish and may consider picking it up and bingeing straight through, I hope all of the characters die.

FTWD is lesser in my opinion. They've had plenty of time to not have it suck, and they certainly could have done better. TWD on the other hand still has my attention and viewership even though I'm not particularly happy about how they're running stuff, and it could be done better as well.

I will say that I'm still a TWD fan and will continue to watch the story play out. I've not yet decided to throw it all under the bus.

It only took us six episodes to make our minds up about it.

Imagine TWD, only you root for the characters to die horribly from the outset.

My kid and I were told to watch a movie tonight. I was browsing a bunch of stuff and couldn't find anything I wanted (Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbor Totoro, Sword of the Stranger) so I rented Inception. I paused it occasionally to make sure she was keeping up. She did just fine and was satisfactorily mind blown by the end. We'll probably watch it straight through tomorrow. It's awesome when your kids are old enough to watch cool movies, and do other cool stuff with you.

watched the first four episodes of The Brave and just can't seem to get into it.

Too hokey, unrealistic and the cast doesn't seem right to me...seems too forced and too much pc/diversity. The storywriting is lacking as well.

SEAL Team has really gotten a lot better. Someone took note of the one mission, one episode lameness and started spreading one mission over several episodes and the suspense/drama factor has increased ten fold. I love how they're how playing it out now instead of cramming it all into one episode. Loving this show. Hope they can keep it up.

Checking my netflix history - so it did. I must have mis-remembered the single season part, since I watched all the episodes but didn't have a clear memory of doing so. There must have been another series, time travel/scifi related, like "Frequency" or "Life on Mars" I was thinking of, that was pretty good and deserved more seasons, but didn't get renewed.

So, um, yeah,
I painted this because I thought the play was about life, you know,
and life is full of color, and we each get to come along
and we add our own color to the painting, you know.

And even though it's not very big, the painting,
you start to figure that it goes on forever, you know,
in each direction, it's like to infinity, you know.
Because that's kind of like life, right?

It's really crazy if you think about it, isn't it?
That a hundred years ago, some guy that I never met,
came to this country with a suitcase...
he has a son, who has a son, who has me!

So, at first when I was painting, I was thinking, you know,
that maybe up here, that was that guys part of the painting,
and then, you know, down here, this is my part of the painting,
and then I started to think that what if we're all in the painting, everywhere?

What if we're in the painting before we are born?
What if we are in it after we die?

And these colors, that we keep adding,
what if they just keep getting added on top of one another
until eventually, we're not even different colors anymore,
we're just, one thing, one painting.

I mean, my Dad, who’s not with us anymore,
he's not alive, but he's with us!
He's with me every day.

We all just sort of fit somehow, even if we don't understand how, yet.
People will die, in our lives. People that we love.
In the future, maybe tomorrow, maybe years from now. I mean,
it's kind of beautiful, right?

If you think about it...
The fact that just because someone dies, you can't see them,
or talk to them anymore, it doesn't mean they are not still in the painting.

I think that maybe that's the point of the whole thing,
there's no dying. There's no you, or me, or them,
it's just us.

And this sloppy, wild, colorful, magical thing that has no beginning,
and has no end, it's right here. I think it's us.

This is us.

Since Bernard Cornwell wrote the books this was based on, I watched a few episodes. Not surprisingly, the television series was disappointing compared to the books, IMO. His stories are very formulaic but his history is well researched. Richard Sharpe is one of the best known characters in the historical fiction genre.

Uhtred should be a big bastard and the actor they cast in the television series looks more like stand in for Orlando Bloom as Legolas.

I couldn't get through the second book in George RR (I wish I was JRR Tolkien) Martin's GoT series. I am happy to say I have never seen any of the television version of GoT.

Irving

We've been watching Lost in Space. It's good, and I want to keep watching, but they really could have done a better job with some inconsistencies, like the water freezing super fast, but everyone above the surface is just fine without a suit. I'm also kind of irritated that a show set in an entirely new world needs terrible people as the anti-hero to generate conflict. I guess that's standard formula for entertainment though.

I go through periods of trying to learn Spanish. Most recently I've been watching shows in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. *If anyone is learning a language, don't use English subtitles because then you just tune out the language you're trying to learn while your brain reads English.* Shows that I really like are Ingobernable with Kate Castillo and Club De Cuervos.

Finally got around to watching "Ready Player One."

The Matrix - Philosophy + Pop Culture References = Ready Player One

Some of the visuals and set pieces were pretty good but the characters are all forgettable and the conclusions is mostly stupid.

One thing I noticed, even though the movie is chock full of references to other things in pop culture, Star Wars doesn't even get a nod. I choose to believe that this is because in the world of Ready Player One, no one likes Star Wars any more after everyone realized how horrible Episode 8 and Solo were.

Irving
09-06-2018, 10:01
I assume they didn't do a great job with keeping the movie close to the book. The book was all about video games and mentioned many of them. They couldn't mention Mario because of Nintendo's tight grip on that franchise. I don't see where Start Wars would have fallen into the story since it wasn't a video game. I thought the book was pretty good, but I can see how a lot of artistic license with the intent of reaching a larger audience (trading video game history for general pop culture) would confuse the plot and really water down the movie. Too bad.

Justin
09-06-2018, 11:33
There are still lots of video game references, specifically to old Atari games, but yeah, the movie relies heavily on other cultural touchstones.

https://www.amazon.com/Snow-Crash-Novel-Neal-Stephenson-ebook/dp/B000FBJCJE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1536261257&sr=8-1&keywords=Snow+Crash

It's well worth reading, even now that much of it is kind of retro. Also, suggest reading Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. It's the only novel I'm aware of that ran into export issues due to ITAR.

Well Irving, thank you for that input.

I am a stickler for original movies that aren't butchered during remakes (why remake something and wreck the whole initial intention?). I understand this series concept is not a movie remake....but a modern time follow up that seemed to stay true to the original concept. I'll give it a few more episodes.

I did notice several little things in that first episode like the background music in scenes and a few other things that I didn't expect to see, and also gave some credit to.

Now i have to watch S2 Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Hopefully LC is getting out of the ghetto, blaxsploitation sthick and kicking it up a notch. Especially after The Defenders series.

Jack Ryan's on the list, which should roll over nicely in to the next season of The Man in The High Castle.

As for Westworld. I think another member might reconsider watching it. There's a few twist n turns that will have you go Oh Fuk. Or not, your choice.

Norsemen on Netflix is a Norwegian comedy show - hardly "historically accurate"
A little slow at times, but a good watch.

Speaking of comedy[ish] The Good Cop with Tony Danza. NY/ Brooklyn based story line with (to some of us) very familiar outside backdrops. It's really not for anyone who doesn't get ethnic / regional based shows. Each one is a stand alone hour show, with more (again ethnic / regional) humor.
The 1st episode

SPOILER ALERT
Where Tony Danza says (loosely quoted) He's got a guy with a big screen tv coming over, was on the money NY funny, but oh so true.

Okay...this is where I fail to understand the true purpose of any "remake" in the first place. Coincidentally, I would add remaking songs to this as well. If the purpose of remaking a movie is to update the film directors options to current technology for interpreting the writers original intent of the given film, okay. Just stick to the damn writers intent and pay due homage to the original film while you decide you're going to mess with it. IMO, the list of films that have been raped and pillaged during remakes is long and disrespectful to the originals.

If you're going to make a "series" from an original film many decades later, then all bets are off and it might blow ass so hard that nobody who liked the original movie will like the series. Others however might. Good luck not messing up something that didn't suck before you raped the idea and ventured into "Classic movie that is now a bad 2018 version of Dallas" with robots.

So, it's cool to talk about shows and share ideas, and that's where I'm at on this particular series.

I think Westworld is the best show HBO has ever done. It’s definitely a favorite of mine. To my knowledge, Abrams has nothing to do with the story, that’s all Jonathan Nolan (Dark Knight Trilogy) and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice) - and the late Michael Crichton, obviously.

It might be bad in your view if you get around to watching it. Top of the line cinematics for 1973, and for the same reason some would suggest I give the new series a chance, I would suggest you could try and give the original screenplay a chance...considering the time it was filmed and the original story idea was a great one in my mind. Halfway through original Westworld now.

Okay here goes. Original Westworld was pretty good, probably before it's time when it came out. Michael Crichton continues to impress me. That said, if the new version tried to stick to exactly the same story, it would have been a steaming pile of shit and HBO would never have touched it. Not because the original was bad, but because it didn't have enough depth for a series (can any 1.5 hour movie?), and it needed to be updated to speak to today's audience. I think a fitting analogy would be if you tried to make a modern day horror movie where every one has land lines and the bad guy cuts the power. Great for any time before the 2000's, laughable for any time after.

I really enjoyed seeing where the new writers pulled all the elements of the new show from. The feel of the updated basement and work area is right on, as is the guest's first introduction to the park, from the hover craft and trams, to the Blacksmith being one of the first buildings you see in the background. OBC, you mentioned the music in the new one. The end scene music of the original seems to be the backbone of the updated music. One of my favorite elements of the new is modern music disguised as old timey piano music and the time it takes me to identify the artist/song each episode. Memorable stuff from the new version is Nine Inch Nails and RadioHead.

Conclusion: The original was great for when it was released, but the new version is leagues better, and it has to be or else it'd be a flop. Pretty much all of the main story elements of the original are worked into the new version, but buried within an enormous level of depth. Tip of the hat to the writers for sure. Having seen both makes me appreciate both on a deeper level and I'm glad I spent the time to watch the original.

No spoilers, but Ray don't read this anyway.

I agree that I liked season 1 better than 2, even though 2 was good; but it took me a while to figure out why. Referring back to Justin's comment about Whats-his-directors-face strict adherence to whatever his formula is, I feel like season 2 of Ozark falls too neatly into the classic formula. Season 1 was more enjoyable because everything was new and there was a lot of character development, but also it felt like the characters made progress with respect to their challenges. Season 2 everything is established, there is a bit more character development, but for the most part it is just a parade of seeming insurmountable problems. After a while that gets old and it's nice to see the protagonists succeed every once in a while. If Marty is being cunning and figuring out brilliant plans to overcome challenges, the show feels refreshing and engaging. If Marty is constantly confronted with elements that he can't really control and he feels like he has little control, the show feels like another rehash of classic drama. Season 1 had a better balance than season 2.

Unrelated, but I heard that Aaron Paul is going to be in season 3 of something, but I can't remember if it is Ozark or Westworld.

Yep. After watching the show a few times I realized that I was never really into it unless the episode was about her character. Her story was interesting enough that I kept watching, thinking that she would enter the main plot. It never happened so the show feels like a chore to sit through. If the author had kept Ned Stark as the main character, I’d probably still watch. With GoT, all of the characters are nothing more than fodder for the real lead of the show: the throne. Each story is arc is about what the characters will do to sit there.

It had so much promise. I also thought, having loved '24' that it was going to be a perfect next step. Then they grabbed the steering wheel and yanked it so far left it was sickening. Nearly gave up when they spouted "86% of Americans want universal background checks on gun purchases, it's common sense.". Then it just got way worse with the rhetoric. I won't spoil it for those that for some reason want to watch it but what a shame. Great premise to a show. Patriot Season 2 is out on Prime. Great show if you haven't seen it.

Ok, I?m a moron. I searched Prime and found a series called ?Original Patriot?, and wondered if that was what you were talking about. After about 15? of researching it, I realized the selection was a ?Prime Original?, Patriot, not.. nevermind. Long day. Gonna give it a shot.

You'll be glad you did. Sorry for not making it clear it was a prime original.

Promising start, thanks for the tip. And don’t be sorry, any 3rd grader would’ve known exactly what you were talking about. I just seem to have attained an exceptional level of retard tonight. On to episode 2!

Travellers S3, Yes! supposedly the were not renewing it for another season.

One of my favorite shows on Netflix. Vancouver is the sci-fi capital of the world. It's gotten to the point that I can recognize the actors in every show.
