Turns out I really love precision rifle. A few people have been really kind over the last year to loan or let me try items so I could sort preferences, save my pennies & now its time to own - plus a few necessities to be ready for regular comps season. Apologies for the lack of visual aids:

Burris - XTRIII/SCR2
Burris - race dial turret
Burris - tactical rings

140gr 6.5 creedmoor ammo
- & more 6.5...

H4350
CCI 220 LR primers

Armageddon Gear - pint-sized game changer

Fehu Outdoors - brass bag

WYCO PRL - annual membership

Couple items from 5.11 (they actually put functional pockets on women's tactical clothing)

Custom Vtac wall - from Tim K.

Fix-it-sticks (precision field kit)

It seems like the 140gr 6.5 is what people are liking, I assume for targets. Are the 123gr a no go?

ChickNorris
02-11-2021, 13:27
Im very happy with the 140gr -ELDm for my purposes & in my rifle, out to 1300-ish yds. I haven't tried the 123gr so I wouldn't know from experience but from everything Ive read, any advantages gained at closer range would likely be negated once I stretch out those distances & especially in certain environmental conditions. At some point, Id be curious to have a look first hand, build a profile, compare/contrast & form my own opinion to the percieved/observed differences over the published data. If I were to hunt game instead/in addition to lr competition, there'd probably be more incentive to experiment on my part but for what I do now, 140s work well.

Irving
02-11-2021, 13:59
Yeah I look for stuff in the 160gr range. I just came across three boxes of the 123gr projectiles the other day, but my friends all passed and wanted the 140gr ELDm instead. Just curious.

I run the 140's, as it's what performs best in my 6.5 .

Sweet! I upgraded my Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone WiFi (which I loved) to an RT-590 and it's crazy how much better this thing is. I thought after reading lots of reviews online that it would be a better experience but I wasn't prepared for just how much better it was from something I already considered solid. Great machine and I have no problems recommending Recteq to people I know. A few have even been bought RT5-90's like mine and RT-700's like yours based on my experience.

So mildly amusing story, I was at a relative's house last weekend and they were smoking wings and links on their new Traeger. It happens to be near zero that day, so he grabs a moving blanket to insulate the smoker... a cloth moving blanket. It ends exactly like you would expect, moving blanket in actual flames on the new Traeger. He was fortunate because only a few minutes before he moved it outside of the garage, but still the flames where close to catching the garage door frame on fire. He just happened to catch it flare up as he went out to check on it, so he threw the flaming blanket into his yard and burnt up the grass in a three foot area instead.

Good times.

These will take a little bit longer to get to temp (especially if you're doing higher temps like pizzas and such) and will go through more pellets to maintain it but they seem to do really well both of those, actually. I had a blanket on my previous smoker and I may make one for this one since Recteq doesn't offer them but I'm impressed so far this winter with how it's done w/o one. I'm not sure how many years of ownership I will need to use it to make up the cost of making a blanket for it versus just using slightly more pellets for colder temps.

If you don't care about patina just run it as is. If you want to keep that stainless looking clean you can add a 1" gasket around the perimeter for less than $20 (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1QKCR2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Some think they'll get more smoke flavor but that's the wrong reason for doing this mod IMHO. If you want more smoke flavor get a tube or tray that adds smoke. For me, I love the lighter smoker profile of pellet smokers as I tend to me a minimalist on seasonings/rubs/brine/injection/smoke/etc and almost never use any of those. I like the flavor of the meat to come through with a compliment from those other crutches. In fact, I almost never do any of those and the results are generally fantastic. As an added bonus you can use the remaining gasket to line the underside of your pellet hopper. It doesn't really do anything other than give it a more solid and luxurious feel whenever you close it that makes it feel much more expensive than it is. It's just a small thing of course but might as well put the extra material to use somehow and I really like the result on mine.

All to save about $0.43 in extra pellet consumption from the lower temps. lol

I see a cold weather cover on the Recteq site that's always OOS. Based on my purchase experience I bet I could get one by calling in. Front shelf was OOS online, but they had no problem adding it to my order over the phone.

Burn in took forever to get to temp, let it run well over the suggested hour to compensate. Thanks for the seal link, I fire caulked the smoke stack before installation but hadn't thought of the lid(s.) If only to prevent leakage and keep it shiny!

Sure thing. Anything to help out a fellow Recteq'er!

I didn't like the factory shelf because 1) the hinges will annihilate a cover if you want to add one and 2) I didn't like the dimensions of it. I built my own shelf for MUCH less money and it's far more functional IMO. I got the factory one and sold it on CL to make my own.

Like so many things in life, you get what you pay for. I would know too because I owned like a half dozen smokers from competitors before this one. Went back & forth for over a year before I pulled the trigger because "how much better can a smoker really be" right? The only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Just got two of the new Ruger/Samson A-TM folding stocks. Overall, it's hard to tell it's not an original 80s vintage stock. They're very nicely done. The folding butt-plate on one doesn't properly lock to the stud on the side of the stock but I think I'll try to remedy that myself rather than send it back. They're ready to drop in the barreled action from your rifle...everything's included and installed. Very easy swap. The hard part is gonna be digging the Mini out of the back of the safe. Wish they were available in blue. I have a blued GB...may put some sort of finish on one of these to match the rifle. A blued one is supposed to be in the works.

Just purchased it today, so i haven't fired it yet. The EPD is a "can" that attaches to another mount, that threads on to the bbl. The "EPD" can be removed by hand, the mount, needs a 5/8" wrench to remove. I work at the range this weekend, so probably have some time to road test it. if not there's usually a few shooters who don't mind trying a different gun.

Related note on the smoker discussion: Pit Boss Pro 1100 is holding up well. I did a salmon smoke last weekend during the cold and held at 140? +/- 5 for hours at P4. Mid summer I can hold as low as 155 with about the same variation. Some variation across the broad surface but I mostly make up for that with a water pan over the searing plate, leaving just slight variation from the far left to the far right. Never had an auger jam. The biggest perk is tremendously bigger cook area than most other smokers... but it is obviously less expensive so among other things, you get less "neighbor cred", which I care nothing for.

I have a very good reputation with snap on and you get what you pay for that being said nothing can touch it when it comes to diagnostic equipment except dealer specific. I walked off the truck with it brand new for $2800 including the 1k they gave me for my old Modis. Not something I would ever recommend for someone that does not do it for a living. Lots of cheaper scan tools out there but they cant do a tenth of what this will do. I have to have a lab scope it has it. Its bi directional meaning I can control just about anything I want on a vehicle to help me diagnose it much faster. Not for a backyard mechanic its designed for professionals. No different than many things in life you have the hobby person products and the professional grade products.

I have contemplated many, many times, but the market is just a little too north of my comfort zone, so I've never pulled the trigger, so to speak. If they ever drop to $25k, I'd be in there like swimwear.

I was not expecting the SP5. I wanted one, I put myself on the wait-list for one with Liberty Firearms, but given the going market rate, I didn't think I'd get one at MSRP any time soon. So I was very surprised when they called and said they had one for me at MSRP, but I went on down there in a moment's notice and picked it up without hesitation. Meanwhile, it's funny that I agonized over a $50 replacement toaster for two months, because $50 for a toaster! Or at least I think it's funny. My wife did not.

I almost went with a different brand but all my other power tools are Milwaukee. I tried looking on craigslist and FB market place for a deal on one of these but it seems a lot of them are stolen. I see a ton of ?new? power tools on FB for sale. I?m not making judgment but when you click the sellers profile, it?s likely not someone you would want to do business with. I?m not sure how these people are obtaining these tools but after looking for a few months, I decided to buy new and not have to worry about it. When I messaged one seller, I asked where it came from and if it was stolen. He responded with ?it doesn?t matter where it came from and I?m not a thief? then blocked me. His profile name was Slick Rick lol.

Let us know if the LED headlights freeze over in foul weather instead of melting off like the original halogen lamps.
I am thinking of going LED on my daily beater.

Irving
03-10-2021, 22:00
I never had any issues with the LEDs in my Amigo, but am definitely aware of the issue. My uncle had a Jeep Rubicon with LEDs and he said he drove over the pass in a blizzard and the headlights had a 1/4" of ice over the headlights. It was during the day so it didn't matter. I assume he had the lights on the whole time or else the story wouldn't make sense. I feel like my lights don't have any way to hold snow, so even a little heat should let it clear, but something like a Fox body Mustang would probably have problems. I'm either going to drive around during this storm for fun, or pull it into the garage and try to replace the clutch and install the low gears.

These lights, and the ones I had on the Amigo have a built-in, powered cooling fan in the back of the housing, so they definitely produce some amount of heat.

The ets mags are a tough fit. I have 2 of the 40 round mags and they are extremely tight in both my HK94 and my Zeinith K style gun. Try putting them in with the bolt locked open. Pull on them slightly so they are at the point where they would just lock into place. Then try releasing the bolt and see if it will shut. It should.

Ridge
03-14-2021, 22:45
I've tried bolt closed and open (empty mag in every case) and it just seems like it cannot reach far enough into the magwell to let the crossbar snap in to place. Sometimes some back and forth wiggling will help, or a rough upward slap on the base of the mag does it. But they feel really stiff in there and require more wiggling to remove them if they successfully locked in. [Dunno]

If you're talking about what brutal posted, that's a Ubiquiti UniFi access point.
It's basically a badass radio for your router, because the radio in the router the internet company rents you is garbage.

Also really handy since you can use several of these on one router, making a bigger wifi footprint.

Keep your router and pipe a couple of access points off of it.

I would bet that one of these access points would serve your house, driveway, and backyard pretty well (I dont know your exact house, but these things have a VERY good range compared to your typical home-gamer router).

My brother's 3200 sq ft coffee shop has just one of these, mounted in the ceiling at pretty much the middle of the building. You can get good wifi about 50 yards outside the asbestos sided building.

Well, the one in the shop was the cheapest model (don't remember specifically which one), but he's in rural TX and throughput on the AP exceeded anything he could get from his ISP, so it didn't matter. The ISP wifi wouldn't get outside the doors at all.

I found the Nighthawk router, from Netgear, will light up my entire house and probably the neighborhood. Good stuff.

Yes, and highly recommended for most users.

I've always run a standalone firewall appliance and tend to be a bit OCD on the security/network side of things.

How many devices is the router supporting?

Erni
03-27-2021, 10:27
I'm using the AC Pro's. The LR or one of the mesh AP might be a better choice for wider coverage (slower throughput).

I run an LR AP. Coverage area is huge. One AP ceilings mounted covers everything.

brutal
03-27-2021, 10:29
Well, the one in the shop was the cheapest model (don't remember specifically which one), but he's in rural TX and throughput on the AP exceeded anything he could get from his ISP, so it didn't matter. The ISP wifi wouldn't get outside the doors at all.

You leaving town anytime soon? That network looks desirable, haha

LOL,

That doesn't show the 80+ home automation devices (including security).

The switch will be up for sale if/when I can find a 16-port light in stock at a not ridiculous price. I don't need 24 POE+ ports and the fan noise is not sustainable in my small office (installed in a 2-post relay rack).

Why not get a USW-24-POE which is a Gen 2 UniFi 24-port PoE switch? 16 of the 24 ports are PoE+ and it's fanless.

Also, why so many smart home automation hubs? I run an ancient VeraPlus and it has no problem with 100+ devices. My guess is you have mixed ecosystems and have to try to band-aid things together because otherwise nobody in their right mind would actively choose to manage several devices across multiple ecosystems.

That's the one I thought I was getting but I guess I goofed up when I saw the open box item available. I will probably return this one and pay the extra $60 for the fanless.

Wrong guess.

A single C5 has no problem with 100+ devices either.

I got a second as a backup when they were on sale and to shift some heavy automation apps to another hub.

Hubitat then released the C7 and I got one when it was cheap and available and just now started to set it up and migrate my devices from the one C5, hence the need for a bigger switch...

P.S. Thanks for the insult, based on your incorrect assumptions, it was very asshatery of you.

I recently had my water heater replaced. While replacing it $1800 bill, he told me my water shut off valve was not working correctly, and he would have to call Aurora water to turn off the water from the street.

How often do these blue water shut-off valves fail? It would seem to me like they are close to never fail?

Or, no.

Why couldn't he have just turned the water off from the street? Maybe not every house has an access like they all do in my neighborhood.

I'm in a condominium, so I think it gets a lot more complex about where to shut off the water.

But I do have a Blue Valve, very similar to what was posted above, which I have been told is my water turn off.

The guy told me that it has failed... but I don't believe him.

How often do these valves fail?

Irving
04-07-2021, 18:37
I couldn't tell you the frequency, but it's not uncommon to have a valve fail, especially if it's a turn style like a hose spigot. I believe the simple 90 degree turn ball vales are the most robust.

Your ball valve, 1/4 turn main shut off valve, may have been damaged by too much heat being applied by an uncaring contractor when everything was built.
Do you have a trickle getting by or a significant amount getting by when shut off ?

ChickNorris
04-07-2021, 18:53
Im near certain if you're in a condo, there is a curb stop for the building & shutting the water off for the entire block is unnecessary. Im not a plumber however so I could be mistaken but from the information you've shared... his assessment sounds wrong to me.

Or is there an issue with turning the valve at all?

arbol

Before my water heater failed, I had zero get buy, and after my water heat, I have zero get buy.

During the installation of the new water heater, the installer warned me that my shut off valve was not working correctly.

I told him that it worked as intended, as I turned off the water when I realized I had a problem.

He told me again, that he selected a leak, but he had another valve downstream that he trusted.

SideShow Bob
04-07-2021, 19:10
Is this the water heater supply shut off ? Or your main incoming shut off ? I was assuming main shut off since you were alluding to the back flow preventer picture, and all main water lines since the 1970s have anti siphon valves.

arbol
04-07-2021, 19:19
Nothing was shut off, until I realized I had a problem (heard water leaking).

When I realized I had water leaking from the water heater, I turned off the blue valve, which I thought would stop water from coming in to the apartment.

All my spigots immediately stopped giving water.

This is what turning off the water main is supposed to do?

But meanwhile, the guy fixing my water heater says that my main water valve is broken, and he will need to call Aurora water to fix it.

Pics, post pics.

Where's your water Meter?

I suspect your shutoff gate valve (could be a globe valve but unlikely) is located only after the meter. I believe this was supposed to keep people from tampering with or diverting water around the meter.

However, there could be a water shutoff valve before and possibly after. Another at the Water heater.

When Parker Water District replaced our meters in 2019, I took the opportunity to replace and relocate my sometimes leaky gate valve with a 1/4 turn ball valve immediately before and immediately after the new meter (the installer's recommendation). There's also one at the water heater and of course for the sprinkler feed line so I can turn off the water at different points if needed. With the new tech, they can tell if your water usage patterns change and they'll come looking. Hell, I even got a notice that I might have a leak, and sure as hell (already knew) I did as I had a dripping faucet that needed attention.

The gate valve had been in the house since it was built in 1982 but had been a problem for many years. It would leak when operated and for some time after full open, so yes the valve packing around the shaft wears out and the gate track gets rust and mineral deposits built up making them hard to turn.

You can possibly replace the packing nut washer with the water on if the valve has a retaining bonnet but if you don't know what you're doing and it comes apart under pressure, it's going to be ugly. Best to get the water shut off and replace the old gate valve with a ball valve (or two).

I’m in the same boat. I’m past maximum capacity and it’s literally playing Tetris to get them to fit back in. The rifle rods really help with guns with optics and pistol grips but they don’t necessarily offer more space. I think I’ll get another medium sized safe because it’s a lot easier to move two medium ones vs one giant one.

About 50 of them running around. We were supposed to get them in 2010 but we know what happened to Pontiac. I have the parts here and on the way to turn it into a HSV-GXP. One needs a LHD donor to make them. 04-06 GTO, 08-09 G8, 12-17 PPV or the 14-17 SS. In the end it should look like this. 85864

Nice choice. If I went with another pistol, it's between the legion and CZ orange.

After handling CZ TSO and CZ TS2, I like TSO slightly better than TS2. Of course, I might have a different opinion after doing some shooting drill/practice with both.
I don't do any pistol and 3gun competition anymore ~4 yr prior to my knee surgery, but I just want one. :D

BTW I still am kicking myself for not getting this P226 X-Five. Could've been a cool range toy. :D

True that. I always wanted them to bring the 'ute' to the states in left-hand drive. Would be awesome to have a Maloo with a big V8.

There was a place in WheatRidge ? I think, that did the conversions. Don?t know if they are still in business.

I had been playing around with an old TV box in my basement for the last few weeks.
Got it running and tried to watch some hi-def material. Big fail on the quality of the output.

Decided to find an updated version and sprung for this

85915

I have only used the device to play youtube video's and stuff I had stuffed on a thumb drive.
Quality of the output seems good to the tv. The LED display is blazing bright to the point that
the text (time) is hard to read.

Speed of the device is fast, and if I figure a way to hook it up to my NAS it will be a nice addition
to the basement TV.

The big downside for now is I have not found a way to access amazon prime via a dedicated application.

That would be Left Hand Ute's. Randy is still doing them but even in Aus the prices of used wrecks has gone up. Since Holden closed down in 2017 parts are getting scarce. Mine was not built there but he has been a big help getting mine together.

Download KODI. Then download a "build" for KODI. The build will have a bunch of what they call "add ons" These add ons are basically apps that access content to stream. There will most likely be an amazon prime add on available. Kodi and the add ons are a rabbit hole though. Here is the Kodi main site. Then just google Kodi Builds and away you go! It's free and the webistes for builds typically have great walk through instructions on how to do stuff.

Google says: It looks like there aren't many great matches for your search

Kodi is good stuff; but - side loading something that is not mainstream going to be an issue.

So, more google searches indicated that a raspberry pi might work - so going to check out a few PI 4 I have and see if it can be used.

On sale at Lowe’s for $99 with an additional free 5AH battery for a total for (3) batteries. Wish it was a 20v but still does 200ft/lb tightening and 400ft/lb breakaway. I’m a Milwaukee guy but this was too good to pass up.

Curse you, Johnny Ego!!

Being the gadget slut that I am, just had to get one of these. Had my doubts, but started depriming some 9mm brass.

Not only is it an awesome tool, it's addictive, like opening pistachio's.

Primers scattered all over the place....

Got a Harvey Deprimer, and in the past two days, it has irritated the hell out of my wife more than any purchase I can recall in the last two decades. The sound drives her up the wall, as do all the primer cups that have missed the trash can and embedded themselves into the carpet. But as an adult fidget spinner, this thing is marvelous.

What will you use the fabric for?

Long ago when I needed a cheap commuter to augment my auto stable of '47 Willys Jeep, Lotus Elan +2, and BMW R100RS, I bought a Saab 92 for $175. The Saab had a 3 cylinder two cycle engine. I rebuilt the engine in my bedroom apartment. Funny to drive, I named it Wallowy.

Wallowy needed new seat upholstery and my sister worked for an aircraft upholstery business at Jeffco. They worked on a lot of business Lear jets including one for John Denver. They reupholstered the seats for my Saab with leftover purple material from the John Denver Lear jet. It was a beautiful upholstery job that cost me $150. In the late 1970's, that FAA approved fire resistant material cost just over $2000 per square yard. Suddenly, Wallowy was a lot more interesting but little more valuable.

Oh, in case anyone needs rings for Saab 92 pistons, I still have some for one piston. The rings were sold in sets of four but the 92 only had three cylinders. Free to some lucky member!
