Me too. Now I live in the desert where we only have humidity during the monsoon season.

Then it really sucks, because our house is cooled with an evap cooler that only spits more humidity into the air. So, high humidity and heat, adding more humidity in a closed house and everything feels wet. Its miserable for a few weeks.

But working in the mountains about 5k ft higher than home, we get lots of it.

If the humidity jumps any higher, we could close early and then call it a night in 1hr. Otherwise, we still have 2.25 hours.

There's definitely nothing worse than trying to fall asleep when its extremely humid. Except, I guess when its humid AND hot. Then its miserable. Though I'm sure you deal with that often...

My room has A/C so falling asleep isn't an issue. The noise is what gets you.

Well thats nice at least. We just upgraded to a nicer evaporative cooler (one with the 12" thick rigid media) and its a HUGE improvement. This summer, instead of the house being 81degF with the cooler on high (like it was last year - and high is super loud), we were at a comfortable 72degF. Not as cool as with A/C, but much much cheaper than A/C.

Our house isn't ducted for A/C, so it'd be around $8k to install. Our new cooler will last at least 5-8 years, and we'll consider A/C then if we are still in the same house. Also, our furnace is the same one that came with the house when it was built in 1974, so if that craps out on us we'll upgrade that system and plan for A/C quality ductwork which should make the upgrade to A/C better.

The downside about evap coolers is that they have to be on nearly all day long. We keep it on from around noon until 6am. Leaving it on overnight really cools down the house to 60deg or so. If we had better insulation in our attic, we could probably squeeze a few more hours of leaving it off, but that's planned for this winter.

In reality, most of the houses down here have a furnace that is that old because they aren't used all that much so they last a long time.

Yea, well our software has a serious memory leak, so if you don't restart the laptop every 2-3 days, the program gets up to 5-6gb RAM and starts acting all wonky. We restarted it my first night, and it was down at 300mb RAM, so I didn't think to restart it or even check it.

could your tech build a scheduled task to execute "shutdown -r" every 2 days?

Probably, it's a MacBook Pro 13" and only runs the control software. They don't see it as a problem though, other than when the memory leak gets too big, the program is unresponsive and can freeze telescope motion. If we have to close in an emergency situation (incoming snow/rain storm) and it freezes, we're boned.
