So basically breathing, trigger control, sight alignment/picture on dry fires? (im quite noob)
There are ways to make sure that you practice these things correctly so that you don't develop bad habits.
it starts with building your position in the prone. EVERYTHING starts there.

He only loans it out to people who can make it look good.... Are you sure you're up for it?

Belly, obviously your rifle stuff went well, how'd your pistol stuff go?
TheBelly
01-11-2014, 16:58
OBC, you loading 223 for accuracy or plinking? My plinkers, I load up 5-10 of each load, shoot them all, and pick the best load then churn them out.
Pistol, I could care less about the ammo because its so much cheaper! However, when I get my 308 rifle soon, I'll probably be doing just what Belly does, tons of dry fire, and not shooting that much.
i reload match grade .308 ammo for less than 30¢/round.
TheBelly

Belly, obviously your rifle stuff went well, how'd your pistol stuff go?
i can reliably hit half of a piece of paper from 15yds.
The hard part is doing it under constraints of time/adrenaline/ light/etc.
BuffCyclist
01-11-2014, 16:59
Well, yea, thats still cheap, but when you load pistol for 16cents per round, its more fun to pull the trigger there LOL.

Sounds good Belly, good luck with the lighter bullets!
And way to reinforce that, my only plan when I go to the range is "pistol, rifle, shotgun, zero something, or a combination"...
No, that's not a plan.
my plan today (specifically) was:
reconfirm functioning of SHTF pistol ammo
reconfirm I can still hit a target (w/pistol)
run 1-5 drills with pistols
Zero BUIS on carbine
Confirm eye relief of precision AR
confirm proper functioning of new rifle length buffer system

BC...I don't know about plinking. I load different stuff, depending on what is available, and try and figure out how it's going to shoot. My max distance with any kind of reliablility is 100 yards, and I'm still trying to figure out the differences between projectiles, loads and all that, and how stuff behaves.

This is the sort of plan that I typically have when I go to the range, but then at the end, I usually put up some steel and burn through ~50 rounds.

^ LOL
I was only slightly kidding. With pistol, my plan is usually working on smaller groups at 15, 25 and 50yds (they're huge by the way lol), counting rounds, working on trigger discipline (I always let the trigger go all the way and I'm trying to break that habit), malfunction drills, and draw from holster, shoot twice, reholster.
I honestly don't shoot that much rifle lately, out of match 22 ammo, but I have gotten the hang of shooting a gong at 200yds with it (learning holdovers). My AR has a reddot, so I usually shoot irons out at 100yds for groups while working on breathing.
But you're right, I should write down a plan before I go so I know what I'm doing.

I normally go to a range that has quite a bit of steel. Today I needed to be more focused, so I went to one that has very segmented lanes.
BuffCyclist
01-11-2014, 17:12
OBC, by plinking I just meant shooting for fun. Not shooting for groups, just having a blasting good time. Although I guess plinking really refers to shooting at steel plates and whatnot, where it actually goes plink, plink, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, miss, plink, miss, miss... LOL
TheBelly

and draw from holster, shoot twice, reholster..
This will be a training scar.
shooting only twice is saying that it will only take two shots from a handgun to get the job done. That might not be the case.
thats why I ALWAYS do the 1-5 drill.

I've been really surprised how much difference a few grains of projectile weight, and different powder, can really mess with a shooter new to reloading.

Its not necessarily for stopping a bad guy, it's for squeezing out two fast back to back shots to work on recoil mitigation, and sight alignment by feel so to speak.

So I was in the mood for some breakfast sandwiches the other week and was about to buy some at the store, then I saw they sell frozen egg patties, sausage patties and decided i'd make my own (probably healthier that way).
Then I found this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B2MRSE/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And holy crap!! Crack one egg in the egg cooker, add 1 tbsp milk, a little salt, scramble it, microwave for 1min and out comes a super fluffy egg patty! Toast an english muffin, toss a slice of cheese on it and assemble.
Delicious breakfast, no crap fillers like frozen or fast food joints, and honestly, it tastes better too!
Ya know, just fyi. In case anyone else enjoys breakfast sandwiches and wants a cheaper alternative!

I've seen the missiles from the highway when they shut it down for launches (once or twice per week), and those are kind of cool. Still quite a ways away so you can't make out any detail of them, but if you're lucky, you'll see the flames out of the back.

I saw several Atlas, Delta, and Minuteman launches out of Vandenberg during my time there. The nighttime launches are pretty neat to watch.

We had land over here, and land over there.... Everything in the middle was part of a missile test. We didn't want to go around to get from here to there, so we just drove the straight line. They cancelled tests for about two days. The enginerds were very upset that the environment of their test was disrupted.
Good vid belly. I'm pretty much stuck on the whole left eye dominant right handed deal. I'm can pistol right handed, but I think I need to rifle left. Thanks for the squib load vid BC. I can't stress how big of a deal it is, I almost tried to fire a round after a squib. I don't really like to think about how close I was to doing so.
BuffCyclist

Oh wait, OBC, you had a squib? I didn't realize that, just passing along a video since I know you're new to reloading. I've heard of the serious dangers of squibs, but never really knew what to look for.
Common sense told me recoil and report would be different, but I never really thought about it much more than that.

It was scary how close I was to firing again, BC. Shell ejected, but the next wouldn't chamber, I didn't check the barrel.... I'm fortunate to have learned this and still have all my fingers.

BuffCyclist
01-12-2014, 04:37
Smart man, if you pay attention, you can start getting good at picking out the planets too. Start with Venus, its super easy to spot (brightest object in night sky), followed by jupiter, mars, and the others take a little more training.
OtterbatHellcat
01-12-2014, 04:40
Venus is always easy to spot, the rest of 'em, not so much.

OtterbatHellcat
01-12-2014, 04:44
I think myself, and you have the highest runs certainly in the last year.
BuffCyclist
01-12-2014, 04:45
Sure, why not.
My bucket isn't a bucket so much as it is a parabolic mirror. The photons travel at such high velocities, I have to slow them down by bouncing them off the 8ft parabolic mirror, getting the rebound off a 1ft mirror and slam dunking them into three near-infrared HgCdTe detectors... At which point my computer picks them up and converts them to pretty pretty spectra.
eta: And yes, that was a joke about having to slow them down by bouncing them off a mirror.
BuffCyclist
01-12-2014, 04:46

How often does the equipment need cleaned, and what's involved?
BuffCyclist
01-12-2014, 05:33
We clean our mirrors with a CO2 "snow" (liquid CO2 which is passed through a nozzle and expanded rapidly to sublimate into a snowlike form that evaporates after about 18" once it leaves the tube), which knocks a majority of the dust off. The drive surfaces are cleaned/lubricated usually the same time. During the dusty/pollen seasons, they clean those every other day if its bad. When its not the dusty season, they try to clean once every other week. We realuminize our mirror every other year, or strip it down to the glass, then re-apply a 40-60 micron thick layer of aluminum that is the mirror's reflective surface.
Because we are a survey telescope, we clean more regularly than most telescopes, because we want the data throughout the 4-6 year surveys to be taken with nearly identical conditions, meaning a mirror between 0-2 dirty, instead of first year getting that and the dirtiness slowly increasing towards the end of the survey. And that is an arbitrary number.

We have a cloud camera (infrared camera that looks at the sky) so we can monitor cloud conditions in real time. It is a downward pointing camera, and points at a hemispherical mirror, that was polished by hand by someone who used to work here. Another observer has built a 24" telescope. Its quite impressive.

Freaking weird dream, recurring one, but this time it went further. I was in prison for something, don't remember what, but I manage to escape my cell....overtake a guard by assaulting him and obtaining his side arm. End up shooting, but not killing a different guard in an attempt to escape the facility. Never did escape, and this part of the dream was facing the penalties of my actions. My dad was there with me, and we actually met the female judge who would be trying my case. I think it was my bitch second grade school teacher, Mrs. Englebrick, and she was gonna lay the hammer down on my dick super hard......it was gonna be life in prison.
It sucks how real dreams seem to be, how you feel all the emotion that you would were you awake. I was dreading the hopelessness and anguish of spending the rest of my life behind bars.......then I woke up.
Any of you guys have any recurring dreams, or ones that are so vivid you believe that you are going through what's happening?
